Your username

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Thesunexchange", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are invited to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you personally, such as "Jack Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people, and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, or website, regardless of your username. Moreover, I recommend that you read our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please create a new account or request a change of username, by completing this form, that complies with our username policy. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Cahk (talk) 17:14, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Request reason:

I agree that I have chosen an inappropriate username, and I've previously asked that it be amended to a name that complies with Wikipedia policy. In the meantime, I've spent many hours in Thesunexchange sandbox drafting an article which I believe will comply with Wikipedia's content policies and which will be of interest to the Wikipedia readership. By blocking Thesunexchange account prior to making the name change, Wikipedia editors have blocked me from the draft text in the sandbox that I worked so hard to prepare. KIndly consider changing the account name and putting the draft content from the old sandbox into the new one. Thank you for your kind consideration.

Decline reason:

You have not convinced us that you understand why your edits were inappropriate. Indeed, it appears you wish to continue making them. Yamla (talk) 13:13, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Yamla, thanks for the comment on the unblock request. I must admit that as a new user I failed to properly read and understand the username policy, and I would like to request that my username be changed such that (1) it is clearly not an organization's username, but rather that of an individual (myself), and (2) the username should not be shared with other people. I regret that I didn't follow this policy initially, and I commit to following it in future. I hope that you won't consider me to be rude in saying that I am somewhat confused however by the your comments about the 'edits' I have made to date, which I assume refer to the draft article in the Sandbox. Forgive me if I misunderstood the purpose of the Sandbox; the term "sandbox" in my mind suggests a non-public space for drafting and testing Wikipedia features before requesting editorial review and posting on the Web within Wikipedia's public space. As I didn't yet request editorial review from the Wikipedia staff, I would be surprised if the account is being blocked for the reason that I'm testing and drafting in the Sandbox space. It is true that I am an advisor to (however in no way legally employed by or connected to) The Sun Exchange, and it is also true that I hope to publish in Wikipedia an article that describes what The Sun Exchange is and how it may be unique from other solar financing platforms such as Mosaic Inc. (which indeed have Wikipedia articles approved by the Wikipedia editorial staff). My aim is to write an article that is completely within Wikipedia's guidelines, similar to that of Mosaic Inc., and of course anything that I write will be reviewed by the Wikipedia editorial staff (after I properly submit it for review) and I will gratefully accept comments or your decision not to post the article, at that time. I apologize for the long explanation above and thank you for taking the time to duly consider the issues I have raised.

Decline reason:

Your editing before being blocked consisted entirely of using Wikipedia for promotional purposes, which is contrary to Wikipedia policy. Nothing you have said since being blocked gives any indication either that you understand that, or that you expect to do anything different in future if you are unblocked. That being so, you are unlikely to be unblocked, since you would be likely to continue to edit in the same way as before. Your claim that the administrators who have dealt with you have been acting on the basis of some malicious wish to suppress content "from sources they don't support ideologically" gives further reason to think that you do not understand the reason you are blocked. You are blocked because (a) you have been attempting to use Wikipedia for advertising or promotion, and (b) you have given no indication that you will not do so again: it's as simple as that, with no ideology-driven evil conspiracy. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 15:10, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

{{unblock|Wikipedia, thank you for changing the username to LT Sun Fin Tech. May I please ask that the Sandbox and other features of the account be unblocked, or that the Wikipedia editorial staff respond to my comments above? Thank you}}

{{unblock|Orangemike, Yamla, and the Wikipedia editorial staff: May I request commentary and discussion on the points above. In short, I intend to write an article compliant with Wikipedia policies and standards, not an article that serves as advertising / promotion. I was using the Sandbox for drafting purposes and not for the purpose of publishing an article that fails to meet your requirements; if text in the Sandbox was inappropriately drafted, it certainly wasn't my aim to publish it. In my opinion Wikipedia editorial staffs' decisions to block editing functions before I am able to redraft and later submit an article for your consideration seems unfair. Please educate me as to why the block should continue, if at all. Thank you.}}

Two things: firstly, please have only one unblock request at a time open - any further comments which you make, just make them at the bottom of this page, without inserting them into a template; secondly, please note that there is no Wikipedia editorial staff, as such. Decisions made in relation to submitted and/or existing edits are made exclusively by editors of equivalent skill and responsibility to those editors already involved with your edits. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 20:38, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hello Wikipedia administrators.

Forgive me, I am not understanding the reason for your block.

I would like to ask you to consider if not-for-real drafting constitutes "using Wikipedia for promotional purposes." I don't think that this legitimate question raised previously has been addressed, and therefore I have made another Unblock Request.

May I kindly request once again that you consider and respond directly to these key questions, considering Wikipedia's own invitation to use the Sandbox as follows:

Wikipedia talk:Sandbox From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Editing test[change source] This is the place to test your editing skills before you do it for real!

Questions for your consideration, once again:

(1) Does putting potentially promotional material in the Sandbox actually constitute promotional editing in Wikipedia? As a result, does putting potentially promotional material in the Sandbox warrant blocking?

Clearly from your actions and statements to date ("Your editing before being blocked consisted entirely of using Wikipedia for promotional purposes, which is contrary to Wikipedia policy.") it would seem to be so.

Yet, Wikipedia clearly describes the sandbox as a place to test editing skills before doing anything "for real."

If editing in a place that wasn't "for real," I would think that no public editing occurred and therefore Wikipedia wasn't used for promotional purposes.

Can you please clarify your decision in light of this?

(2) Is it fair for administrators to Assume that promotional writing in the Sandbox will continue in the "real" Wikipedia space?

I would like to argue that this is not a fair assumption, and that blocking a person as a result is inappropriate.

If you allow someone to test and draft in the Sandbox, on the basis that they require a non-public space to make mistakes and learn from these before publishing "for real," then you cannot simply assume that the mistakes that you encouraged them to first make inside the sandbox will be perpetuated outside the sandbox.

I have been blocked on the assumption that I would publish something promotional in the "real" Wikipedia space in future, based on what I have written in the sandbox. This is not the same as blocking me for actually writing something promotional.

(3) I am aware that many companies, including those in The Sun Exchange's industry sector such as Mosaic Inc., have published articles. Clearly, these are not promotional because they aren't blocked and appear in Wikipedia's public space "for real."

Therefore, in theory, there should be some information about The Sun Exchange that could be published in Wikipedia that is non-promotional. The subject matter (a company, a business) clearly doesn't preclude publication. It is simply a question of whether or not appropriate information is published in a non-promotional way

(4) Assume that I am incorrect in (1) above, and that drafting in the not-for-real sandbox space constitutes using Wikipedia in a "real" way that requires administrator monitoring for, among other things, drafting of promotional articles, and that users are subject to blockage based on what they have drafted in the sandbox.

In this case, if Wikipedia administrators are monitoring the space for promotional activity, and if they are able to block people for such activity, I think this should be clearly disclosed to potential Sandbox users. Wikipedia should publish an advisory statement alerting new users that their sandbox tests are being monitored for appropriateness and non-promotional activity. Stating that sandbox editing isn't "for real" without any further disclosure, and then "really" blocking people for what they have written, is entirely misleading.

Decline reason:

Not an unblock request. To answer your question -- it says very clearly, in multiple places on all pages, that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Advertising, marketing and promotional behavior are not allowed by definition. MER-C 12:49, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Advertisement is not allowed anywhere in Wikipedia (See: WP:NOTADVERTISING, ...This applies to usernames, articles, categories, files, talk page discussions, templates, and user pages). Now that you learned that, please tell us what kind of edits would you make if unblocked? Would you continue to write about your company (in violation of WP:COI), or not? Vanjagenije (talk) 23:43, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I will not write in violation of the COI.— Preceding unsigned comment added by LT Sun Fin Tech (talkcontribs) 01:36, 11 June 2016‎ (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but as explained above, you have to:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked. Vanjagenije (talk) 09:00, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say "Please do not put inappropriate things like copyrighted material, swearing, or other attacks in the sandbox" covers this situation. No, we don't explicitly mention that you should not put blatant advertisements in your sandbox. We also don't explicitly mention many other inappropriate things one shouldn't put in a sandbox. It should be obvious that publishing blatantly promotional content anywhere on Wikipedia is inappropriate. I'm also concerned by the blanket assumption that the articles on competitors must have been written by those competitors. In combination, this does not suggest that LT Sun Fin Tech is here to improve the encyclopedia. Thus I personally would not unblock this user. Huon (talk) 17:41, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the statement "Please do not put inappropriate..." could cover promotional material. However, for the sake of clarity, can I recommend that (1) you include 'promotional material' in this list, and (2) that you when you tell users that sandbox articles are 'not for real' please also prominently inform new users that administrators will be monitoring usage and blocking those that don't follow the COI. Perhaps I missed it, but one or multiple references / links to the COI would also have been useful.

I can imagine that a large group of new Wikipedia editors mistakenly believe that the site could be used for some type of promotional activity, and I would surmise that administrators spend much time blocking people who misunderstand this. In my opinion, it would be more efficient for all if it was disclosed that promotional activity in the sandbox isn't appropriate, and that users can be blocked in connection with it.

I now understand that my connection to The Sun Exchange precludes my writing anything about it in the sandbox. I would like to contribute in other ways as an editor in future, but I can understand the Wikipedia administrators' concerns, and I respect your final decision.

I am an expert in banking and finance, particularly as it relates to the Asia Pacific region. I am also recently involved with a company (Sun Exchange) which is promoting access to electricity via tiny solar installations to developing areas in Africa, Asia and elsewhere, utilizing new technologies such as blockchain smart contracts, digital currencies, and the Internet of Things. Although I cannot write about the activities of this particular company, in future I might contribute to articles about solar power in developing nations and the financial and engineering technologies employed. I hope that I might contribute to the encyclopedia by leveraging this knowledge.
