DataUSA

Speedy deletion nomination of DataUSA

[edit]

Hello Mattrdini,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged DataUSA for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Phil (talk) 19:04, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you responded on my page and are not being discouraged from contributing. Probably the best thing would be becoming familiar with and seeing if it can meet the Notability guidelines. Wikipedia:Notability. Even if content isn't promotional it needs to be something that could objectively be considered notable. Phil (talk) 20:48, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've been uploading a variety of maps from DataUSA for inclusion in articles. The Terms of Use for those images are set forth here - http://datausa.io/about/usage/ - and I'm wondering whether you consider your uploads to be consistent with them. I'm not sure myself - I see what it says about the GNU Alfero General Public License re the content, but that's immediately followed by this language: "You can copy, download or print content for your own use, and you can also include excerpts from Data USA, databases and multimedia products in your own documents, presentations, blogs, websites and teaching materials, provided that suitable acknowledgment of Data USA as source is given." The underlying data is freely shareable but I'm not sure that republication on Wikipedia of the generated images falls within what appears to be this personal use authority.

What do you think? JohnInDC (talk) 00:43, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've raised the question here if you care to offer any observations. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 02:39, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
