Referencing cell lines using publications and not vendors sites[edit]

Hi, I have noticed you are entering references to properties of the cell line entries that you are creating that are linked to vendor pages (ATCC, Altogen, etc) or databases (such as mine, the Cellosaurus). This is not a good practice, you should reference the original publications for the properties your are descrining. For ATCC at least you are citing a resource that distributes these cell line but for Altogen this is problematics as they only distributed transfection kits for the cell lines, so they should not be cited at all.

Furthermore there is quite an heterogeneity in the ways you and others have named cell line entries in Wikipedia, some have the name "cell" appended (like HCT116), some even "cell line" (like BT-20) and in many cases the name used is not the "official" one from the original paper (like HCT116 that should be HCT 116). This will cause inconsistencies when all cell lines (more than 100'000) will be entered in Wikidata (in a few weeks using a bots that we are developing).

No problem, if you're having a bot add the cell lines then I'll wait for you to do so. I'm just trying to add general info on the major cell lines I know of, and usually vendor pages/databases have easily accessible information (I'm not subscribed to any journals, so it's kind of difficult to get original papers). I agree that the title naming conventions are not standardized; I assume that you have a set format in mind, so if you want to change the titles go ahead. Hi Meredith: the bot will add cell lines to Wikidata. not in Wikipedia and will probably be first deployed in early June. So you can go ahead with cell line creations in Wikipedia as it will not be a duplication of effort. Just create them with the name which is the one used in the Cellosaurus.
