Decimal accuracy[edit]

Per WP:OPCOORD, please do not add decimal places for cities and counties that locate them down to the nearest 10 meters. Thanks. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 15:33, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adding geographical coordinates[edit]

Hi -- thanks for being so eager to update geographic articles with coordinates! It's worth noting that almost all articles about geographical places already have coordinates in them: e.g. Beverly, Massachusetts, and can be found in the upper right hand corner of the article. These are added with the "display=title" parameter to the {{coord}} template, or sometimes they're added to special parameters in the {{Infobox settlement}} template if it's present.

I'm going to "rollback" your changes because they're redundant with the information that's already in these articles, but please don't be discouraged -- just check to make sure that the coordinates aren't present before you add them, and follow the existing style when you do add coordinates to a new article. :-) Thanks for helping improve Wikipedia! —Tim Pierce (talk) 12:33, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove coordinates from geography section of city articles, unless you plan to remove it from ALL 19,000+ articles, which I seriously doubt anyone would do. • SbmeirowTalk • 22:42, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the coordinates for ALL city articles on Wikipedia were pulled from the official government datebase at http://geonames.usgs.gov/ All wikipedia articles should match these official coordinates and shouldn't be changed unless the database changes. • SbmeirowTalk • 22:52, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, MrBill47. You have new messages at Twp's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
Wikipedia guidelines are nothing more than guidelines, and guidelines can be changed if they don't make sense! Whats the point of changing just a few, if you don't change all the city articles in the USA, or all of the city articles in Kansas? It is kind of a half-ass approach. It is better just to leave it the same OR put in a request to get someone to make a BOT make the changes to a large number of articles OR change the guidelines if someone isn't going to clean all of them. • SbmeirowTalk • 19:59, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A brownie for you![edit]

Stepheng3 has given you a brownie! Brownies promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. Spread the WikiLove by giving someone else a brownie, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. Thank you for your willingness to help with geocoordinate cleanup.

Removing redundant coordinates[edit]

Hi, I am a patroller of all of the communities of Iowa and I have noticed you removing the redundant coordinate information located in the Geography section in a few of Iowa communities. I wanted to say thanks, I also have been also removing that same duplicate template coordinate information. When I first came across the request to remove this redundant information I was doing it in this style. BASIC EDIT The <br> was to keep the minus sign with the longitude numbers. It was the only solution I found after trying various code formats. I would leave out the break (<br>) if the Geography section was lower on the page where this was not a problem.

After learning more about coordinates and how they are used in various external programs I changed the way I was addressing this problem with an IMPROVED EDIT. This requires adding the parameter |coordinates_format = dms to the {{Infobox settlement}} that maybe was not originally available.

I have restored the decimal coordinate (not the template coord) information in the Iowa cities you have visited so far. I feel this is important information, even if the custom in Wikipedia is to show the coordinates in the degree/minute/second form. SEE CASCADE, IOWA

I do not mean to infer that you need to add your information exactly as I have, just showing you my way. By all means please continue adding (or removing) information as you see fit as long as it follows Wikipedia guidelines.
Keep up the good editing. —RifeIdeas Talk 15:24, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Current WikiPedia practice, as described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:COORD, is to enter the coordinates only once, in the upper-right corner of the page. MrBill47 (talk) 15:24, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with your actions today at at Centerville and Cascade as I had re-added the decimal coordinate information to the Geography section that you had deleted. I feel the information is important as I have previously stated: the custom in Wikipedia is to show the coordinates in the degree/minute/second form (at least in the US). I was not entering any multiple coordinate templates be it {{coord}} or {{Infobox settlement}}. That I believe is the policy (removing redundant templates). Actually after re-reading Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#multiple copies of coordinates on a page? the practice is: The settled standard for coords in articles is to have them in the infobox, if such exists, and at the top right of the page. as stated by --Tagishsimon. I have added to that conversation today.
On another note the practice of using the colon(s) in the Wikipedia code to create indents to differentiate between each of the different Talk page posts is generally accepted practice. I hope you don't mind me adding them to your post.

Adding redundant information as you are doing makes it very difficult to maintain the page. Decimal coordinates are available by simply clicking on the coordinates in the info block. There is a discussion about this. I will find it and tell you how to participate.
Here is the discussion page: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#multiple copies of coordinates on a page.3F. Feel free to chime in.
Yes I had read the discussion before I first posted to your page on June 28. that is when I started to use the IMPROVED EDIT. I re-read the discussion and posted a request asking for a clarification from those with more knowledge before I posted to your talk page on July 1 (which I stated and wikilinked). Although I do not understand the .3F part you added on the end of the link.
Yes someone who knows that clicking on the coordinates would produce the added decimal information would not need the decimal information. However most people reading Wikipedia do not know this, I (and you I assume) did not until reading the discussion we have been talking about. That is why I feel it should be included in the Geography section (the information not the template). I have suspended my edits in this area until I get the clarification from those with more knowledge on the subject. Being that it was a holiday weekend it may take a few more days. I am watching the discussion page, I suggest you do too.
On another note, I think it is common practice in Wikipedia to sign your posts even on your own talk page. at least in all the talk pages I have seen that is the practice.
