Finnish names for Swedish cities

Hello. Please stop adding Finnish language names for Swedish cities, as you did at Luleå and Piteå, since we only add official names, and none of the foreign language names you added is official. Thank you. - Tom | Thomas.W ^talk 21:22, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thomas! Most tätorts (urban areas) in Norrbotten county already have Finnish names added. And nowadays almost entire Norrbotten belongs to the area where Finnish language has an official status (including Luleå since 2013, even Swedish Wikipedia mention "Luulaja") So please, stop removing my edits as they are workable. Some municipalities, like Kiruna (Giron) and Torneå (Tornio), have an official name also in Sami (Kiruna) or Meänkieli (Torneå), but AFAIK no municipality has an official name in Finnish, and AFAIK all municipalities who have an additional name in another language are all located in the extreme north of Sweden. Many municipalities may have an additional unofficial name in another language, for example Finnish, but we only add official names, which for Swedish municipalities means names approved by Lantmäteriet (Swedish WP). Swedish Lantmäteriverkets will is that in reference to multilingual areas in Sweden are Swedish, Saami, Meänkieli AND FINNISH names mentioned as much as possible: "svenska, samiska, meänkieli och finska namn ska så långt som möjligt användas samtidigt på kartor samt vid skyltning och övrig utmärkning i flerspråkiga områden." Article of Luleå even mentions many nicknames that have never been official. So I really don't understand what is this issue with Finnish name form.

The English language Wikipedia is an international English language WP covering the entire world, and all rules apply to all articles, regardless of if it's an editor adding an unofficial Finnish name to an article about a Swedish town or an editor adding an unofficial Tamil name to an article about a town in Maharashtra. As for Finnish names for Swedish towns etc very few have an official name in Finnish, the vast majority of the names approved by Lantmäteriet are in either one of the Saami languages or in Meänkieli. Some of the Finnish names are also wrong, with the now corrected Övertorneå being a good example. "Ylitornio" refers only to the twin town/municipality on the other side of the Finnish border, and isn't used by Övertorneå kommun to refer to themselves even on pages in Finnish. What I corrected was that Övertorneå (tätort) is Matarenki in Finnish. And the area is originally Finnish/Meänkieli speaking territory and nowadays multilingual. As I see you have removed my add even though it had nothing to do with the source you mentioned, name of the tätort Övertorneå and municipality Övertorneå are different as locals know.
