Religious schools

Hi Patrick, the official position of the Turkish ministry of Education is that there are no religious schools in Turkey any more. There are vocational high schools for the training of religious scholars Imam Hatip schools but this system is currently withering away. There are also a number of loosely affiliated private schools, (see the paragraph Gülen's movement in Fethullah Gulen), which have a low-key conservative agenda, reflected in the attitudes of the staff rather than in any formal way such as the curriculum. These may aspire to be religious schools at some stage but at the moment this is not permitted. Perhaps there is one in Alanya (I don't know), either way it's controversial to say there are religious schools per se in Alanya at the moment.

I did not take out every linked date, only linked *partial dates*. Linked *full dates* remain. This issue is due to the date preference software.

Unfortunately the date preference software was badly designed. It combined date preference mechanism with the hyperlink mechanism. As a consequence, Wikipedia has lots of links to full dates. These links are not there to provide access to date articles. They are there to make the date preference mechanism work.

Unfortunately, many editors have the impression that Wikipedia convention is to link *all* date-like terms. That is why many partial date elements (e.g. day-only, month-only, year-only) are linked without contextual relevance to the article. Links relevent to context are good. Even plain english words can be linked when relevant. Thus the plain english word 'green' would not usually be linked. But it might be relevant in an article about 'magenta' because it is a comparable term and therefore relevant to the context.

The same applies to partial dates. Days, months and years are plain english. In the majority of cases readers are extremely unlikely to need follow links about them. For example, the year '2002' is unremarkable in almost all cases although it might be link-worthy in an article about palindromic years. That is why many editors assume that partial date links are added in error (for the reasons above), not essential context, and remove them as a matter of cleanup. If you look at Wikipedia:Featured articles, you will see that many of them have been cleaned up by editors in this way. It is one of the things that people mention as part of the review process. If you think that readers will follow some or all of the date links, feel free to add them back in.

Incidentally, you will notice that I made some other cleanup edits relating to temperature and distance units. It was all intended to improve the article. I hope that explains things. I can see you have done a lot on the article. Keep up the good work. Regards Lightmouse 19:56, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Alanya Castle

Hi Patrick! I really appreciate the great contributions you are making for Alanya and the region. Just a suggestion, coming from a Turk it might surprise you, but I think most readers here will feel more at home in Alanya Castle than in Alanya Kalesi. I am a fanatic when it comes to official names or personal names but in this case, kalesi is just castle. You can check Bodrum Castle on that. In my viewpoint, so should Yağlı güreş be titled Oil wrestling, since it's the exact English equivalent, and the sport is not even exclusively Turkish/Turkic, but let that remain between us for the moment. :) Cretanforever 03:50, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Did you ever see any violence of PKK happened in Alanya in the last 100 years? So when you put that sentence there people will think bombs are bowing over the city. So be careful and do not mess with Alanya.

Pls understand that there are other poeple who may edit this article and there are people that may know what u may not know. I am not trying to be the last editor on your hometowns article.

misunderstanding

You have a misunderstanding problem on me. I will be on the last place of the queue if there are people that dislike non-Turks in Alanya. All i wanted to say was there are thousands of shopowners in Alanya and maybe % 99,99 do like Jewish people. But u insert on the Alanya article the thoughts of % 0.01. This gives the city fame a black shade. Thanks anyway. I will neither try to be a friend of you nor hate you. Go you own way and do whatever you want. Wikipedia community respects you more than me. Index of sorting

You have contributed to the article List of cities in Turkey by adding an index for sorting. (Jan 23, 2007) Thanks; the table is much neater than the previous editions. But the figures ( so the rank) have changed since then. On the other hand, some cities (ilçe in metropolitan centers) have been merged within the metropolitan centers (see the talk page of the article [1] and the article Metropolitan centers in Turkey). Alanya in Portuguese

Hi Patrick. I have finished the translation of the Alanya article to Portuguese (pt:Alanya). Considering that you seem to be the main editor of it, I want to congratulate you for the good job you have done. I guess I am in a privileged position to say that, as a translation implies a reading that goes beyond the usual. I'll let you know if it gets to be a featured article. I plan to propose it perhaps next September. While the quality of the photos is quite good, maybe I in September I have some even better taken by myself. ;-) BTW: I have uploaded a bunch of photos to Commons from Fickr. As for the population data, I used the same sources as you, but I only included the historic data of the city center, to avoid confusion or contradiction. Help request on pt:Alanya

Hi Patrick. I translated the article Alanya to pt.wikipedia back in June and I think it's time I propose to make it a "featured article". I had plans to wait for having my own photos processed, but I can't wait anymore and it would be a bit of vanity of myself including my own photos, because the existing ones are quite good.

I have reread the text carefully and I found only one one thing that can cause me trouble: the part «Although Alanya has been part of Antalya Province since the Ottoman Empire, many local politicians have advocated a separate Alanya Province.» is unsourced and I can't find any source. I was wondering if you can help me, because pt.wp editors tend to be very strict on unsourced pieces of text on articles proposed to be featured, and I think that the info is relevant to the article.

As I said on the proposal to feature it, I did little besides translating it and search one or two sources. Actually it was harder to create all the missing articles to avoid a "red sea" of links. Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey)

Hi. I was wondering if you'd be interested in setting up Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey), based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). Now it's not a contest in itself, it's designed to motivate people to inspire others to improve content and build something which demonstrates the hard work going into the country which is visible. The focus is more on quality improvements but new articles are welcome too. Eventually a Turkish National Contest could be created to fuel it, like Wikipedia:Awaken the Dragon, in which contestants can choose to keep the Amazon vouchers themselves to buy their own books for more articles or put them into book fund to help editors further improve Turkish-related topics by giving them the books they want. It will begin though as purely an improvement drive.
