Freedom Now - Copyright violation
[edit]I just noticed your changes to the Freedom Now article are a copyright violation od the freedom now website [1]. I'm sure you mean well but copyrighted information can't be used in that way. The list at the bottom should be ok, but the body of the article needs to go back to a form that doesn't break policy. For more info on the policy you can check out Wikipedia:Copyright violations. I don't want to discourage you from improving the article, but this is one policy where there's no leeway.--Cube lurker (talk) 18:43, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Cube Lurker, my name is Patrick Griffith, and I am a staff attorney with Freedom Now. I appreciate your concern with protecting our IP rights on the internet, and I admit that I am completely out of my element online. That said, we are a small office, and it has fallen on me to update the wiki page. As the copyright holders of our website (and our logo, etc.), we were hoping to expand the page, and do so in a way that is consistent with our website (and it seems decidedly bad to have multiple versions of a mission statement floating around the internet). Do I need to become an "administrator"? Is there another way that I can authorize the use of our text and logo on the page? Any insight that you have would be quite helpful. If you have any questions, our contact information can be found at the Freedom Now website. Thank you in advance. Pgriffith06 (talk) 19:09, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- That's an area I only have passing knowledge of. I do think I can point you in the right direction. WP:Donating_copyrighted_materials has some information and in the section WP:Donating_copyrighted_materials#Granting_us_permission_to_copy_material_already_online there's an email adress staffed by volunteers who have a deeper understanding of what needs to be done. I hope this is of some help.--Cube lurker (talk) 19:22, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hello, Mr. Griffith. Cube lurker asked my input here, and he is quite right about the way to go to verify permission for this material. As WP:Donating copyrighted materials points out, there's a form for this situation at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. If you can send this to permissions-enwikimedia.org, we should be able to clear up the matter fairly quickly. Please be sure that (a) the e-mail address used to contact the Wikimedia Foundation is clearly connected to the Freedom Now site, (b) the consent form mentions both text and logo if you wish to release them both, and (c) your letter clearly indicates the name of the article in which the content is to be used.
- Typically, these e-mails are processed in about a week. If you want to expedite matters, please feel free to drop by my talk page (you can reach it at the "talk" link after my username), and I'll see if I can find it in the queue and address it more quickly. Thank you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:08, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for the info. I will run this by others at the organization, in the hopes that it will be approved eventually. In the mean time, I will review the page on copyright violations to ensure that any edits I make (in my personal capacity) will be consistent with WP policy (and signed by me). My apologies for the earlier confusion. Best, Patrick. Pgriffith06 (talk) 20:49, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
