Warning Problem (GLOO ?)

Hey, not sure if it's GLOO, but i've noticed it twice now, that if a user already has a final warning issued to them, instead of reporting them you seem to be issuing a first warning again? Just thought I'd bring it to your attention :) - Happysailor (Talk) 02:20, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Happysailor, thanks for the heads up. I hadn't notice that - weird. Do you have a specific example so that I can inform the developer? Cheers! ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 02:23, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Croatan Indians

The edit that I made to Croatan was reverted. I am currently doing research on the Lumbee Indians and Croatan Indian and these tribes were not a mix of african americans and white women. They were in the the United States, prior to African American slaves arriving. Therefore, the idea that they were of African American ancestry is absurd. If you check the Lumbee page that is currently on Wikipedia, you would know this as well. Someone is adding this information to take away the credibility of the Lumbee Indians. Prior to posts being posted someone should check the facts a little better As a matter of fact, I am Lumbee Indian and I do know who my ancestors are, I have them traced back to the 1800's. I am also a history major with an emphasis in American Indian Studies. If you would like some books that have good information on Lumbee Indians - I can provide you with some names of books. I am requesting that that post be removed. I am learning how to use this talk page I apologize if I am not doing it correctly. Whywhywhywhy2005 (talk) 03:16, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes it was, because you deleted a lot of content, some of which was referenced. The article must be based on proper references, not on your original research. You should also gain concensus on the article's talk page before making major changes. If you need any advice please feel free to ask. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 03:26, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
So even though this page in in direct conflict with another page on the system, you are leaving it – that I don't understand – the verification is under the topic Lumbee Indians – why can there not be a link to the Lumbee Indians instead of gibberish? The sites that are cited are not fact based. They are someone's opinion. Have you done any research on this topic? As I said – It is not my original research – I can cite actual real documents that exist – most of which are already cited under the page on Lumbee Indians of North Carolina – including US Congressional documents.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Whywhywhywhy2005 (talkcontribs) 03:50, 26 April 2011 (UTC) ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── What I suggest you do is to use the references on the Lumbee Indians page to back up the changes you intend to make to the Croatans. My only role in this is to ensure that referenced content is not deleted from Wikipedia. A couple of suggestions: Create a simple user page that perhaps mentions your heritage - this boosts the level of confidence in your edits; also make a germane comment in the edit summary box before you make changes - this makes editors much less likely to revert. Good luck. ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 04:02, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Information about Hans Ragnar Mathisen

Hallo Phil88

A link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people#Notable_people_of_Sami_descent There is no information about Hans Ragnar Mathisen. I asked himself to put information, but he said the it was not possible. Then I tried myself, but got very strange notice. What shall I do.

Thank you for your help. I added a couple more images (i.e. Dacian war trumpet and Celtic carnyx - they are similar. Parvan (1928) was saying they are identical. Other more recent authors say these are similar. Tools - no, not people; things to help your copyediting work :¬)

Hi

Do you know about the scripts tools that are available to us? In particular the dashes script (I just used it here [1] for example)

It is quite simple to install, especially if you have edited your custom JavaScript page before.

You just need to add

importScript("User:GregU/dashes.js");

to your scripts page

Chaosdruid (talk) 21:51, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

PS Just noticed you other note - hope you get better soon, maybe stay off the bats droppings and horse penis? lol :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 21:52, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks - will add it to my scripts file. You miss the point on the bats droppings and horse penis, that's what keeps me fighting fit :). None of that western antibiotic rubbish, give me a bull's scrotum anyday! Best ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 22:10, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
LMAO :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 22:52, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Hmm. I added that script to my custom javascript settings but, unlike the other script I have in there, the new one does not appear in the toolbox (running Firefox 4). Any ideas? ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk

When you edit a page, it should appear as an extra tab at the top of the page, as a little drop down arrow (pointing down) between "add to watchlist" and "user" - when you hover over it it should expand a little dash under the arrow. I am using FF4 also, with Vector as my Wikiskin. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:28, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
Ah ha, I see now - it has been added to the move dropdown. Thanks mate. Nice cleanup on Clint BTW. ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 23:38, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
(ex) He holds a special place in my life. We used to make up cowboy stories when I went to my godmothers house, her son and I would do the plots for them and all of us 6 boys would act them out in the garden and the back alley, sometimes in the park across the road. They were very gory, all inspired mainly by the Dollars films and other spaghetti westerns and her son (who always played the Eastwood type role) went on to much bigger things, he has worked on a lot of screenplays in the US, including with Tarrantino, as well as writing several books, one of which was later up for Tarrantino to shoot. It is amazing how things turn out!
My youngest brother has a constant remionder of those days, a diamond shaped scar on the bridge of his nose where I shot him between the eyes with an arrow - so lucky I didn't blind him lol. At nine or ten years old one doesn't always think of the possible consequences of things like that!
Anyway, I don't want to change it too much, I really am interested to read it more than copyedit it lol - time for bed here though so maybe I will carry on tomorrow, best wishes for a complete recovery :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 23:53, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The script seems just to remove any existing ndashs rather than following WP:MOS - is that what it's supposed to do? ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 23:46, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Nope, it is supposed to follow MoS...maybe it needs some updating. I use it on just about every page I copyedit, but have never had anyone say anything about it making errors. I will investigate tomorrow when I get back online as I have to go to bed really as working tomorrow unfortunately. Alternatively you can ask Diannaa or SMasters about it, as it was a GOCE recommendation to copyeditors, and would be pretty uncool if it was not working properly and making bad edits! Chaosdruid (talk) 23:53, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
Don't worry about it now - get some sleep. I ran the script against this and nothing happened. ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 00:05, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
I added some more, it is trying to change several of them, including the first one...I have some things to do here still, should have more time spare in an hour or so.
K, I looked at it in more detail - it changed the hyphens to dashes when you ran it on the test page [2]. Try it now, it should make substantial changes... Chaosdruid (talk) 13:02, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Thanks for all your work on this - seems to be working better now. As for example - 27-29 January - according to my reading of the styleguide that should be an ndash but the script doesn't change it - or am I reading it wrong? ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 20:24, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

No, you are correct, it should be making them into an ndash - I have used the script and it seems to have changed it into one in the first and second date examples. It seems it has problems turning mdashes into ndashes though. I will try and get hold of the script maker and find out what is going on there...Chaosdruid (talk) 22:53, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Thanks mate, let me know what he/she says. Best ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 22:56, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Raised at User_talk:GregU/dashes.js#problems_with_dates.3F - although it seems that the script is only designed for changing hyphens to dashes, if so it would not be capable of changing mdashes to ndashes...it may be some time before an answer is forthcoming as Greg seems to only edit every month or two. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:01, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── OK. I try not to use mdashes if I can avoid it but they look sooooo cool. Hit you right between the eyes like Clint's magnum. ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 23:06, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Hyde F.C. Copyedit

Hi, you left comments on the talk page but could you claryfy what these mean and where they are, cheers,

  • A private individual website hosted on btinternet.com is not considered a reliable source unless the author is a noted individual published in other media.
  • The term "purple patch" may not be understood by some Wikipedia readers - either link or replace. LiamTaylor 10:50, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
What I meant was
  • The following reference is not considered reliable according to Wikipedia guidelines - anyone with a BT Internet account can set up their own web page but that doesn't make it necessarily reliable. "Hyde F.C. later relocated to Townend Street but moved back to Ewen Fields in 1906 after merging with Hyde St George's who played in the Lancashire Combination league.<ref name="Hyde Football Club - History">{{cite web | url=http://www.fchd.btinternet.co.uk/HYDE.HTM | title=Hyde Football Club - History | accessdate=March 26, 2011 | publisher=Football Club History Database}}</ref>"
  • "The decade after the Second World War proved to be a purple patch for the club" The phrase purple patch may not be understood by all English readers of Wikipedia as it is a bit colloquial (and arguably unencyclopedic). My suggestion was to change it to something like "a run of good luck" or link "purple patch" as I just did. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 20:36, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Clint Eastwood copyedit

Thank you for taking the time to copyedit the article, I appreciate it. Your edits have really improved many areas of the article, which I'm sure will still be a pressing point at FAC. I've addressed the clarification tags, save one which will be resolved when the other main editor reviews the source. Thanks again! --Happy editing! I gave a very CONSTRUCTIVE, KNOWLEDGEABLE, & VERIFIED correction of the name of a Togolese city by the Togolese government and you call it vandalism? The Togolese government knows more about their cities than anyone, but if you believe that you know more than they do, you are just a conceited person that is right even though you are wrong that doesn't deserve to be called an editor or anything else that has to do with PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM. Go back to the tabloids! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoonotics (talkcontribs) 04:05, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

No you didn't. You inserted a personal view in a Wikipedia article here which is vandalism. The type of comment you made belongs on the article's talk page. If you believe that the name is incorrect then you should first find a reference, add it to the lead then ask for the page to be moved. Please remember to sign your posts on user talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 07:25, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
