Image upload

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

Pick an image name.

When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.

Source the image.

On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.

Provide copyright and license information.

This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whomever created it.

If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you own the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.

If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under fair use, but such a use should be justified on the image description page.

Describe the image.

To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

Unspecified source for Image:Kasik.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Kasik.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Image copyrights

Could you please provide some evidence that you created any of Image:Vera Egermayer.jpg, Image:Ivan Bohacek.jpg, Image:Pavel Bratinka.jpg, Image:Barbara Day.jpg, Image:Marc S. Ellenbogen.jpg and Image:F.W. de klerk.jpg as you have claimed? They all look very much like standard press shots to me. Please note that uploading images with false copyright information is considered a form of vandalism and could get you blocked from editing Wikipedia. Note that I have listed both the six images above and this one on WP:PUI as the claims of public domain and GFDL statuses have not been backed up with any evidence. Image copyrights

You should tag the images with the appropriate free license that the images have been released under. Note that if permission has been given only for use on Wikipedia, this is not acceptable and the images will be deleted. You should also get the copyright holder of the images to e-mail a formal written statement licensing the images to the Wikimedia Foundation office (info@wikimedia.org).

I am also slightly worried that you are creating these articles because you have been asked to. Articles should be created because they are of general interest, not because one person or group wants them created: see WP:NOTABILITY and WP:AUTO. Cheers --Pak21 16:32, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not revert articles to promotional versions

On 2 November 2006 you identified yourself as an intern working at two connected organizations called the Prague Society for International Cooperation and the Global Panel Foundation. You stated that you were asked to create entries for these two organizations and for their president & chairman, Marc S. Ellenbogen.

Given the obvious promotional nature of your original versions of those articles, you are in breach of Wikipedia's Conflict of interest guideline. Please understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a free hosting service for promotional literature about individuals or organizations.

All edits so far by Praguesociety, and all non-logged-in edits from IP numbers 213.175.39.33, 64.204.217.21 and others, have been exclusively about promoting Ellenbogen and his two organizations. Articles about the famous people who have at some point received the Prague Society's obscure "Hanno R. Ellenbogen Citizenship Award", were edited by 213.175.39.33 on 24 March to include tedious sections on the award and its history, with little or no regard for the overall integrity and encyclopedic quality of those articles themselves. (On 31 March I shortened those descriptions to brief mentions.)

All the three articles you created have been edited by other editors to bring them into accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines and encyclopedic goal. On 4 April, you showed blatant disregard for that work (and the reasons offered for it in edit summaries) by simply reverting the articles to your own promotional versions without any attempt at justification. And not once have you cared to address the concerns of other editors here at your talk page.

You are hereby warned that if you continue to disrupt Wikipedia this way, you may be blocked from editing. As a PR strategy it may also backfire in the sense that this practise reflects badly on Marc S. Ellenbogen and the two organizations.
