Hello, I'm Materialscientist. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Steve Green (singer), but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 07:01, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if this is how to respond to your message, but I wanted to respond. I just started editing Wikipedia tonight and I thought I'd start with Steve Green's page because I know a lot about him. Each time I edited something I was learning how to do it and I didn't know how to add references. Thanks for your message. I'm still not sure how to add citations or even message as I'm still learning. I got my information from Steve Green Ministries about section. If you'd like to collaborate, I'm open to that provided I can figure it all out. Thanks. Blessings to you. Psalm22Isaiah53John316 (talk) 07:21, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

I think I've been blocked

I think I've been blocked. Psalm22Isaiah53John316 (talk) 08:37, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I was editing Singer Steve Green's page. I didn't know how to cite sources yet, so it's true I was wrong. I didn't realize how closely watched pages were and so I was just changing the information that I knew to be incorrect. I think I've now been blocked from editing Steve Green's page or responding to the person who blocked me.

The information on Steve Green's page is incorrect in a few areas and one of the main reasons I made an account to edit Wikipedia is to fix it since it's frustrated me for a long time.

Steve Green Ministries about page states that he started in 1984 not 1986.

It states he plays the guitar and flute and it states he has 6 grandchildren.

I tried to add this information to his Wikipedia page but it was constantly reversed. I did eventually even add sources.

Please reconsider my being blocked. Psalm22Isaiah53John316 (talk) 08:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. You haven't been blocked. Your edits were reverted since they weren't formatted correctly. I've since updated his instruments and the year he started by placing the source you provided in the correct place.
Getting started with editing Wikipedia can be really tricky as we have many guidelines. If you'd like to continue editing Wikipedia, I think you should read two of our guidelines in particular. The first is WP:SPS. Steve Green's personal webpage would be considered a self-published source. While you can indeed use a self-published source for completely non-controversial and non-self serving statements, like what year he started playing and what instruments he plays, you have to be very careful about using such sources in general. Also have a look at WP:COI. I'm not accusing you of anything, but you seem to be particularly interested in improving this article. If you have a close connection with the subject, please consider whether you have a conflict of interest and act accordingly as per our guidelines. Have a nice day. Thank you for your message and for restoring and improving my intended edits to Steve Green’s page. Thank you also for the guidelines you recommended that I read. I’ve read them both and they were helpful.
I understand the need to not have people with a conflict of interest editing pages. I just thought I should say that I am in no way related to Steve Green, nor do I know him or anyone connected to him. I have listened to his music and watched many of his concerts for almost 10 years. I have also listened to and watched many interviews he has done on the radio or elsewhere. The Lord has used his music and the things he has said to help me and my family during some of our most difficult times. Because of my knowledge about him, it’s always bothered me that his Wikipedia page contained inaccuracies or gaps in facts. So, when my brother decided to start contributing to Wikipedia on other pages, I asked him to fix the errors on the Steve Green page, as well. Then, it was suggested that we both become contributors and learn together, so I did the edits myself. I realize now there is way more to editing Wikipedia than I thought.
So, thanks again.
One other thing, if I might mention it: During the whole process of my edits being removed/reversed by an administrator, it appears as if the entire Personal Life Section of Steve Green’s page was deleted. I’m not sure if there is a procedure for recouping an entire deleted section of a page, but I do think Steve Green's page would benefit from having the Personal Life Section put back.
If no such procedure exists, I’d like to gather and input the deleted information and citations that were once there, along with my addition of him having six grandchildren. (I think that after the administrator deleted my addition of the six grandchildren, he then must have decided to delete the whole section, instead. I don’t understand why.)
I’m not sure how to add a whole new section, though, so if there is an article on that you’d like to direct me to, I’m interested.
Thanks for all your help and patience with me.
Blessings to you. Psalm22Isaiah53John316 (talk) 07:30, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly OK to edit an article because you are a fan of the subject. I've definitely improved the articles of some of my favourite musicians, films and books over the years, for example. If you're planning on editing Wikipedia long-term, do try and branch out and make improvements to articles in multiple categories though, to avoid being accused of being a Single-purpose account.
If you go to the 'View History' tab at the top of Wikipedia pages, you can see what articles used to look like at previous points. This version here [1] shows what the article looked like before your first edit, which shows the old 'Family Life' section. As you can see, the section contains no sources. While I personally wasn't bothered by the information about his wife, children (and grandchildren), any material on Wikipedia that is unsourced is allowed to be removed, so the editor who removed that is well within their rights to do so. If you want to restore the information, it would be best to find reliable sources that verify the information (you can read about what constitutes a reliable source at WP:RS). As a rule of thumb, if no sources exist to support what you wish to add to an article, that would be an indication said information isn't really worth mentioning in an encyclopedia. But also keep in mind the guideline WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Just because something is verifiable, does not make it automatically worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia. I think Mr Green's immediate family and grandchildren are completely fine to mention, assuming you can find a source. While I think you are very honest, one of the reasons we insist on sources is because there are unfortunately a lot of vandals editing Wikipedia, who will add information to an article that looks harmless but is deliberately inaccurate. Don't ask me why they do that; some people are just very strange. :)
I hope this is helpful. I thoroughly recommend the Teahouse if you want any advice on editing in general. Damien Linnane (talk) 14:07, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
