Could you point me to the exact content which was removed? And what about it was inappropriate? we are not advertising.

Spamming a link to your website all over the page is absolutely advertising. Check out WP:SPAM. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 04:59, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response. 1) am I responding properly? I am doing so by "editing" the comments I received from you...I was expecting to see a "reply" option somewhere but I've not seen it. 2) I had a look at the link you provided and failed to see a "limit" for the number of times a url can be sited. Furthermore, the link your provided suggest that links for the purposes of generating a business transaction are not permitted. We are not generating any business transactions. But we've written extensively about Roatan, and we operate the largest online Bureau for the Island. I think we know a thing or two about our island. Our website has FAR more content on it than does the Wiki result for "ROATAN" so we wanted to add information related to the islands Geomorphology and its Coral Reefs. Finally, the real motivation behind us establishing an account is that we notice that a Wiki search for "Roatan Tourism Bureau" does not yield any results. And we would like to List our Bureau in your search. Is there a more appropriate way to get this done?

Thank you for your reply, you formatted it correctly. Regarding your reply: That is exactly what advertising is though; directing people away from Wikipedia to your website. As well, check out WP:REFSPAM which states "Citation spamming is a form of search engine optimization or promotion that typically involves the repeated insertion of a particular citation or reference in multiple articles by a single contributor. Often these are added not to verify article content but rather to populate numerous articles with a particular citation." Unfortunately, if you keep spamming your website it can get Blacklisted. I cannot stress enough, we are NOT interested in spaming your site. We have only established an account today and again, we did so with the purposes of 1) completing the record on your "Roatan" page and 2) adding a page for "Roatan Tourism Bureau". I am officially terrified at making any contributions because 1) I don't have time to read every "how to" and 2) we may do us more harm than good. Is there a "FOOL PROOF" way to ad a page about "Roatan Tourism Bureau" and if so, where can or can't we submit our citations? Regarding becoming a reliable contributor to the "Roatan" am I able to include missing information? and if so, should I submit ONE citation at the end of the section or is it best to provide a citation incrementally as these are needed? - That is what I understood one of the tutorial videos to be saying.

Also, I fully understand the concept of "directing the reader away from Wikipedia"...but I am failing to understand how citations should work. For example, there was a section I updated to include Roatan Geomorphology...I then cited that section. Then, I added a section about Roatan Coral Reef...I again sited that section with a different URL as that information is found some else. Both citations are appropriate to make. How would I cite these without "using an external source" - Here again, I am happy to simply type in "Roatan Tourism Bureau" as the citation, but the popup asked for a URL, so I provided one. Help me understand the correlation between adding content and adding an appropriate citation.

You can try creating an article with WP:YFA. Basically, you create a draft that can then be approved by an experienced editor if it passes our notability criteria. Please note you do have to declare your conflict of interest. That is the best I can advise besides just leaving the page alone and working on growing your website on your own. To show notability, third party sources (like newspapers) must discuss your company and it should be written from a neutral point of view. I agree with your assessment that you may do more harm than good. Please note that if you do have a Wikipedia page you don't own it and if something negative were to come out about your company, if reliable sources discuss it, it can be added to the page. Regarding sources; Adding citations at the end of paragraphs probably won't work since travel/tourism sites aren't considered reliable sources. Again, reliable sources are third party newspapers, websites etc. For example, The Globe and Mail is a third party Canadian newspaper. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 05:35, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I just had another look at the Roatan page. I noticed that the following "external links" have been allowed, including three organizations who do not at all serve the island in any official capacity:

External links[edit]

Could you guide us in how to be considered one among these? Most of the content the above mentioned sources cite have in fact originated from our research and content. We are not asking you to remove them, but we believe we are at least as reliable a source as the above mentioned. We are happy to "earn our keep" and "add value" to this topic. I am asking, what have these organizations done to be considered reliable external links?

I just removed them as promotional links aren't allowed. Unfortunately, you aren't considered reliable by Wikipedia standards. Please consider the paragraph above about creating a Wikipage. You may also find WP:HELPDESK helpful as many experienced editors watch it and can give advice. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 06:06, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, you've been very helpful. I will check out the help desk. And while we might not be "considered reliable" by Wikipedia standards, I can assure you few organizations the the island better than we do. Thank you again.
