Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain

I was amused by your edit summary. Sadly, most Wikipedia editors think the possessive of Gildas and Thomas couldn't possibly be Gildas's or Thomas's. I was greatly vexed a few years ago when the governing body of the great St Thomas's Hospital decided to change its name to "St Thomas' Hospital". If it's any consolation, the whole apostrophe thing is 18th century foolishness, the dons somehow persuaded themselves that the correct spelling of the English genitive ending in all cases was -es, so as the apostrophe came into use it was applied to genitives without an e in them. All quite unnecessary, and the Germans didn't make the same mistake. So we were already in a mess, and now it gets worse. Moonraker (talk) 17:34, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
