Query about course

Hi, Ryan,
My previous questions that I posted to the Education Noticeboard never got any response so I thought I would write directly to you and you could direct me to the right person. I came across User:English231/Destination wiki where the students say the teacher's instruction was to create a Wikipedia page and I just wanted to make sure someone in Wiki Ed was aware of this course. Right now, it's just a user page but I don't know whether students in this course are expected to create new articles in the main space. Hope all is well, Liz ^{Read! I should have investigated this first but the students created a main space article which was deleted and then restored and moved to user space. It still seems like a good idea to do some outreach if anyone in Wikipedia Education has this in their job description. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 19:40, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

@Liz: We can certainly try to get that class on board with us. Pinging Samantha (Wiki Ed) and Adam (Wiki Ed). Adam is Wiki Ed's humanities content expert. He looks into thus far unsupported classes editing Wikipedia to see if he can identify the instructor (Ian (Wiki Ed) for science classes). Samantha does our outreach so if we know the professor (or perhaps the class, since it's probably easy to match?), she would reach out to see if we bring them on board. It used to be a bit more straightforward, but the program has grown significantly since the days when all of that could be done by one person. Sorry you didn't get a response to your ENB post. Visiting scholarship

Hi Ryan. I just saw the watchlist notice about the four new visiting scholarships. I'm managing an expert review of en.Wikipedia's article on Parkinson's disease here. It's been arranged by The BMJ and they've recruited the world's top researchers and scholars in PD for the job.

When the reviewers challenge a claim in our article, I check the cited source for the claim to see if we've misrepresented the source, and search for a source that supports the reviewers' position. I've been leaning heavily on Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request but this can be a slow process and often I don't get essential medical articles.

I've got more of these reviews lined up - Endometrial cancer and Deep vein thrombosis are in the pipeline and I'm hoping we'll get Malaria ready for review soon. It would help this process enormously if I could have access to a medical school's ebook library and subscribed journals. With such access I'd also patrol new changes to medical pages - something I gave up on a couple of years ago due to inability to access sources.

Would you be able to approach a medical school, and see if they'd be willing to offer us a visiting scholarship? I realise I'd be competing with other eligible candidates. --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 00:03, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

@Anthonyhcole: Hi there. Thanks for your interest in the program and sorry for not responding sooner.

This project with the BMJ is really interesting. At last year's Wikiconference I led a session about alternative modes of expert engagement, and we've tossed some possible ideas around at Wiki Ed for ways we might do so. I'd be curious to see any documentation about the project if there it exists.

To answer your question, yes, I think it would be great if we could connect you with an institution that could provide you with access to their library resources. I don't currently have such an opening lined up, but medicine is an area where I'd be confident we could set something up. Do you foresee the Visiting Scholarship tying in with the BMJ project directly?

The first step is to head to the Visiting Scholars application. You'd specify that you're "not applying for an open position" and it'll ask some basic information about your Wikipedia experience, interests, and what sorts of things you're looking for. For example, if there are particular databases or publications you'd need access to or particular universities you'd be particularly interested to work with. Per the latter, I should add that Wiki Ed's mission limits us, for the time being, to institutions in the United States and Canada (but there are no such restrictions for the Scholars themselves).

I can start making inquiries as soon as that application comes through.
