David Harris

I notice you have freely quoted from the CricInfo profile and I daresay you don't have a copy of John Nyren's book. I have several points to make about CricInfo's profile:

  • It has seriously misquoted Nyren who never wrote that Harris was "masculine, erect and appalling". He uses the word "erect" when describing the start of Harris's approach to the wicket but that is all.
  • The information that the straight bat was introduced in response to Harris' bowling is completely and utterly wrong. The straight bat was introduced in the 1760s after bowlers started pitching the ball: Harris was not recorded until the 1780s although he probably started playing in the 1770s. All sources except CricInfo are in agreement on that one.
  • The "direct quote" stating that Harris was "of strict principle... high honour, inflexible integrity, a character on which scandal or calumny never dared to breathe" is a misquote that is part-invention and part-copy error. Nyren's words are quite different and even the meaning has been skewed.
  • The one about the effect on Harris' figures of catches not being recorded is stating the obvious and, in any case, Harris was no more successful than Lumpy, Brett or probably Bullen, so the use of the word "immense" is an exaggeration.

I notice that you have written that Harris was a "pre-first-class" player so you have obviously taken the view that one of the later first-class start dates should apply, such as Roy Webber's 1864. This conflicts with WP:Verify because there are other sources which stipulate much earlier dates and it has become almost a convention on this site to accept that anyone who played what CricketArchive calls "major cricket" was a first-class player. If we all quoted Webber, who is quite verifiable and absolutely credible, players like Alfred Mynn and George Parr would become "pre-first-class". See WP:CRIN and first-class cricket, inter alia.

You were right to try and improve the article which was an untidy stub awaiting development, but I'm afraid using CricInfo is not the way to go about it. I expect you don't have the books by Nyren, Buckley, Waghorn, Mote & Co. that are quoted in the bibliography but they are the credible sources for Hambledon players. CricInfo invariably muddles, misquotes and makes errors: I know of other WP:CRIC members who agree with me on that one. I have invariably found that any article which has used CricInfo as its main source needs serious revision. ----Jack | talk page 20:09, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

One other small point. Hampshire CCC did not exist in the 18th century. We have articles for pre-county club teams such as Hampshire county cricket teams and these are always linked if an article is about the county team that existed before the club was founded. The first county club was Sussex in 1839 and most of the rest had been founded by the mid-1860s. ----Jack | talk page 21:00, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
