Media cross-ownership
Heya SMasters, this is Frankie and I'd like to welcome you and thank you for being our online mentor for this WikiProject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maabsta (talk • contribs) 21:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'm so sorry, somehow I missed your note. I get too many messages here, and sometimes, I read the most recent and do not see that another earlier message has been left for me. Thanks for dropping me the note, and I look forward to our collaboration together. – SMasters (talk) 07:17, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
groups of students in need of mentors
Hey SMasters. One of the classes working with the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, Jonathan Obar's Media and Telecommunication Policy, is working in small groups and would like us to assign a mentor to each group (rather than having students request the mentors they'd like, as other classes are doing).
I invite you to sign on as the mentor for one or more groups, especially if any of the topics catch your interest. To sign up, go to the course page and add yourself as "Mentor: you" in the section for that group. They students and/or professor or campus ambassadors should be cleaning things up soon to list all the usernames for each group and add a few more groups. Once you know who the students are in the group, you can leave them each a quick introduction to let them know you'll be mentoring their group.
Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:10, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- I have taken a group, thanks. – SMasters (talk) 07:00, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Check up
Dear Smasters,
I just wanted to check in because I haven't heard anything about the article I've been working on. My article is the National Emissions Standard Act. My teacher advised us to "be bold", so I went ahead and started adding information. I hope everything looks okay; please let me know what you think.
Thank you, Walthakl (talk) 19:50, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks and an idea
Thanks for the barnstar! I noticed you're planning to do WP Wikify in the middle of April. Since that project will probably hold another backlog elimination drive in April, it might be nice to swap your April 18 Wikify interview with your March 28 WikiProject Council interview. That way, the Wikify drive can reap the full benefits of the Signpost coverage like the GOCE drive did last summer. -Mabeenot (talk) 17:41, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- The barnstar is long overdue . Yes, good idea. I'll swap it. – SMasters (talk) 00:48, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Manual of Style
Nobody - except Tony - is proposing to eliminate the Manual of Style.
We all have multiple roles here, and comments on WT:MOS are in our capacity as editors, not as proof-readers, deciding not whether we should have a house style, but what it should be. Editors wrote - and rewrite - MOS, after all; there's nobody else to do it.
The question at hand, from my point of view, is "Should Wikipedia's house style ever require something which is not English? which other speakers of English will not recognize, and will stumble over?"
(Some comments would imply that if MOS said that every third letter of Wikipedia should be upside down, we should decide that that was house style and implement it; fortunately the actual claims have been less extreme; and the issue about dashes is not well-founded in MOS at all. )
I should be deeply grateful for an answer to this question, since most people have answered "no" and only Dodger67 and Tony have given any explanation for their "yes". Septentrionalis PMAnderson 19:45, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- I am obviously a keen observer of all this. I will give my views if and when I feel it is appropriate. Otherwise, I prefer to take a back seat and see what transpires at this stage. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 14:05, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Wow! Really appreciated your comments on MOS on 05:18, 24 February 2011. It would be nice to turn that into an essay or maybe amend an existing one. Well worth preserving. (Not so sure that a sentence or two might go into the MOS itself BTW). Thanks. Student7 (talk) 14:10, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- No problems. I'm not sure if it's deserving of an essay, but it could perhaps be included in the table in the contraction article. – SMasters (talk) 14:16, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

My Interview
Could you please check my interview and give me feedback?
-- Thomas888b (Say Hi) 13:41, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll have a look over the next few days. – SMasters (talk) 14:03, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- At first glance, one of the questions we usually ask, is how new members can help the project. This question is to assist the project in recruiting new members, if they can relate to something that they have a particular interest in. You might want to add this as you still have time, but it's up to you. SMasters (talk) 14:22, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- I've completed a first round of a full copyedit, and also fixed the formatting. You can have a look at the edit summary for some of my points. I usually let Mabeenot write the closing sentence/"coming soon" blurb as he does it so well, so I normally leave it blank – but it's up to you. Let me know if you need anything else. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 15:40, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- What is copy editing? Thomas888b (Say Hi) 17:26, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Question
What are subpages? Are sandboxes considered subpages? (JoeCool950 (talk) 10:09, 2 March 2011 (UTC))
- Any page with User:xxx/YYY YYY is a subpage. For example, your subpages can be found here. – SMasters (talk) 16:54, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- And yes, user sandboxes are usually subpages. – SMasters (talk) 16:57, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- I see how that works then, if all three were left blank, then they would think you'd want them deleted, I'm guessing that's how that works. If you don't have anything to work on in the sandboxes, then you're going to blank the sandboxes, or your own sandboxes. Hopefully, following what I'm talking about. But if your main userpage was blanked also, then they'd think you'd want those deleted, or the administrators would. (JoeCool950 (talk) 06:54, 3 March 2011 (UTC))
- You can request for sub-pages to be deleted, but as far as I know, the primary user page is normally never deleted. It is OK to have it blank, many people do. – SMasters (talk) 06:58, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Good article review
In regards to the Five Finger Death Punch good article review, though Pantera5FDP updated and expanded most of that article (I think), the last edit to the article was on January 15 while their last edit was on February 2: Special:Contributions/Pantera5FDP. I went and fixed (hopefully) some of the minor issues with the Prose. I hope that is ok? HrZ (talk) 14:05, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- OK, will have a look at it in the next few days or so. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 16:55, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
