Jay Chou article

[edit]

thanks for writing a really informative article. so many things i didn't know about him before. 142.103.124.100 16:53, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! I'm happy to offer what I know. SeleneFN 04:12, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. Thanks for spending so much time on the article :) Weezcake 19:37, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reading! Writing this article makes for a nice hobby - it does that quite a bit of time, but it's more fulfilling than other forms of entertainment, like television. SeleneFN 22:42, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A really really cool article! man it makes me want to learn even more about him 24.184.194.200 01:52, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of Jay's Songs

[edit]

I'm impressed, the list looks nice and you did 95% of the work when you started the page, keeping the history so neat, great work!
However I think the article should be rename more appropriately tho...because he has had a few concerts where he performed songs written by other artists, and he has also collaborated with other singers like Coco Lee, etc. Currently the songs are all from the 7 albums he has released, so maybe naming it as 'List of published songs by Jay Chou' should be more fitting.
Great work on the list nonetheless~ LG-犬夜叉 09:42, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

aww crap I liked the list so much I missed the part of the page under the list haha...I guess if you take that into consideration the article title is just fine. -.- sorry... LG-犬夜叉 09:45, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
hey that's ok! thank you for your compliments! I think in time I may add Jay's songs from his EPs, or maybe even songs written for other singers. Right now, my priority is to get FA status for Jay Chou's main article. It'll likely be ready for nomination within 2 weeks.
Hey Selene~ I was surprised in a pleasant way to see that Jay Chou made the Featured Article of the Day on 2008 July 21!!! Congratulations heh, you really put a lot of effort into bringing that article to FA status~! Wishing you the best with your studies and everything else~! LG-犬夜叉~ 09:00, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jay Chou's FAC status

[edit]

Hey it's me again. Haha, don't worry about it, I just wanted to expand the opening paragraph, as I still feel it is too short for a featured article candidate, but the best I got at that time was just a couple of lines ><
What I don't get is why the alias of '周董' was deemed to be 'unencyclopedic'? Anyways, let's hope the FAC goes smoothly! LG-犬夜叉~ 09:59, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I was the one who added his alias in my edit here on May 8th, but ya, I've been around wikipedia for quite a while and I've certainly seen a great deal of vandals, but I've also met many people that are diligently working to improve this project.
I worked on Chou's page sporadically, usually just some minor changes and improvements, and judging by the pace it would take at least a year before it got anywhere near the status of being FA, until you came along. The page was totally transformed into a respectable one worthy of FA, all in just a couple of months, and I didn't even notice until late april haha, but I did wonder about how the page seemed to get better and feels more appropriate for a talent like Jay. heh btw you should reply on a users talk page in the first place anyways :P LG-犬夜叉~ 05:51, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Jay Chou article is really informative! Since I neither speak nor read Chinese, it's a great resource that allows me to learn more about him. I definitely added my support to the FAC nomination page!--bakuyaku 20:14, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey~ Your hard work really paid off! Congrats, it is well deserved. Best of luck with your studies and such LG-犬夜叉~ 03:25, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, well I'm really sorry to hear that, but I agree with your reasoning as I feel that this open-ness wikipedia is known for definitely has its drawbacks. I must say that I've really appreciated your contributions, while it lasted. Thanks again~ Take good care! LG-犬夜叉~ 09:13, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concede

[edit]

I wanted S.H.E to become the first C-pop article to get featured, but I knew that there wasn't going to be enough resources to elaborate the article extensively. I had a bias towards the article so I didn't want to touch the Jay Chou article, so then it wouldn't become featured first. But once you came along, and expanded it extensively, my worst fears pretty much came true. With now an almost unanimous support base, despite S.H.E being the first C-pop article rated as "good", Jay Chou will be the first to be featured. Ah well. Silver medals aren't that bad, eh. But concessions aside, I would like to ask - no, plead - you to help me with the S.H.E article. Copyediting, researching, anything. Maybe you could ask people to help collaborate to help the article, anything. I know I've been selfish with the Jay Chou article (or rather against it), but there were times that I did help (I think). Let me know what you think. - Pandacomics 15:59, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, this comment summarizes the entire Wiki experience. Well, congrats Selene, on Chou's FA! ALTON .ıl 08:06, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

copyediting

[edit]

You rock, Mr/Ms. Ph.D (candiate?). I'll see if I can work on A-Mei next, seeing as she's the next closest to GA/FA status (and unlike S.H.E, she actually has English-media coverage). What do you think about suggesting a Wikiproject C-pop to Wikiproject China? - Pandacomics 17:45, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the first name thing is a bit tricky, because in Taiwan, their last names are almost never mentioned. - Pandacomics 08:35, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, for dramas and whatever, would it be better to keep TV ratings numbers, put them in a separate table (to put in an image to enhance the article section) or remove them entirely? - Pandacomics 21:00, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. But would it be not unreasonable to put, say, a graph comparing drama A and drama B to show how they fared over time (to draw a comparison), while putting a couple of numbers in the prose to make the graph relevant? As for the Reaching for the Stars example, I wanted to show that they had a rough start because of bad timing. But yeah, let me know. (shrug) - Pandacomics 13:25, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The point I attempted to make was that the drama just had really bad timing, because finales are usually really highly rated. RFTS ran into not one, but two, so that kinda cut into the ratings a fair bit. But as for the Hanazakarino/Corner with Love bit, would it be a stretch to just create a week by week chart on MS Word to save on some numbers? - Pandacomics 11:51, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, in that case then, I want to emphasize the decline in their TV careers, since the section attempts to sketch a timeline of their television careers. Would I still end up just simplifying it to that? But then again, with the simplicity, I might not even need that middle section. Bahhhhhh. - Pandacomics 03:03, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By expanding, I assume you mean "Person A played the adjective adjective protagonist who insert action here and insert action here." I assume you mean how the drama roles contribute to the image, because I don't think hosting a program does much for their image. Drama reviews, unlike movie reviews, are harder to come by. I'll see if I can search their names with their respective roles. Shouldn't be too hard considering they use English names (smart company move, heh) - Pandacomics 04:46, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Except the thing is, they're nothing like the girls you see in music videos or dramas. They are, by entertainment standards, "bu zheng chang" literally "not normal." As in "total weirdos." - Pandacomics 05:21, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I meant that their actual selves are, compared to "ideal celebrities," not of the normal kind, i.e. weird. I'm trying to dig up something similar to your "public image section," but it'll either be too full of examples, or if I want to just keep it simple, it'll be too short. So far, I have news articles calling them "gu ling jing guai" as well as energetic ("huo po") and stuff. - Pandacomics 06:20, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Providence, Rhode Island's nomination for FA status

[edit]

Hopefully, I've addressed your comments concerning the nomination of Providence, Rhode Island for FA status. When you get a moment, I'd appreciate your input concerning revised article. Thanks.--Loodog 04:19, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After discussion with one of the tenders of the FAC page, he agreed to let me nominate again immediately. As such, here it is. Again, I'd appreciate as much feedback as you can give.--Loodog 14:19, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaack

[edit]

Hey, Selene. I've been thinking about the lead for the S.H.E article. How would one such as myself transition from all the rosy stuff to a little tidbit on the group's politically controversial nature, not to mention that they cover a lot of songs (that is to say, criticism)?

Also, I think you're right about the whole ratings thing for dramas. Nice numbers but they really should be nuked and blown up and probably moved to their respective drama pages.

Thirdly, on the image part, I really only have five links to describe their "image." I have no idea how to expand on those like you did with Jay's public image (granted, he has 100000000x more news exposure). Thanks. - Pandacomics 12:12, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to butt-in, but I see you've left an interesting hypothesis on User:Alton's talk page as to why Jay Chou got featured. As for saying that "guys who approved it had some part in the editing process", as far as I know, only User:LegolasGreenleaf has edited Jay Chou mostly for grammar and typos; if some of those people edited before February 2006 when I started working on that article, it's got nothing to do with the current writing. Anyways, I acknowledge the fact that you are upset about Jay Chou getting featured... but in case you haven't realized, I am trying to help you, and I'm not sure you indirectly discrediting my writing ability and effort is the best way for you to go about it. SeleneFN 20:32, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I meant that the guys who approved it have had a hand at the editing process for the article at least once for either vandalism, or a few slight grammar edits, or what have you. I know for a fact that you wrote over 90% of the thing, which I commend you for, and you have excellent writing skill as a Ph.D candidate, but having people edit it and approve it sort of comes across as biased. Legolas, for example, had a hand in reverting vandalism on the article in addition. Zeus1234 (who was my school's trivia club president last year) and bakayaku, in my opinion, provided support on grounds that, simply, they're fans. I know that Zeus1234 is a fan because I know him in real life. On bakayaku's page, Jay Chou is there, listed in one of the user's favourite artists. He/she goes on to say that "he's a well known artist." If an article on, say, Stanley Huang, were to be at FAC, then it probably wouldn't pass on grounds that, hey, no one knows him as well as Jay. There is a high probability that these assumptions are false, but when you read the candidacy and see the supporters' backgrounds at first glance, then it seems rather biased.
I know my thing sucks at flow. You're helping a lot, which is great. But when FAC oppositions are there on grounds that I'm not using dashes correctly, or that there are "unnecessary blogs at the end" (which, by the way, are official. and I could have proved it if they had simply asked.) Furthermore, the group's not NEARLY as notable as Jay Chou. Not even close. But how many support/oppose/comments did it get? Maybe four or five. Tops. I am still rather bitter about it, but I've decided to vent it out instead of holding it in and getting even more frustrated if the Lee-Hom Wang decides to undergo further sweeping changes and become featured. - Pandacomics 21:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I have nothing against your work. Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada. I have problems with the people that review it. And it was probably just a bout of bad luck for me to have those reviewers "happening upon" my FAC thing. Whatever. What's happened has already happened; I can't change anything about that. - Pandacomics 00:20, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the "anti" POV in the criticism section was intended to counter the music career section, saying that, you know, there are people that hate the group, and here are reasons why. As for political controversy, I was looking more into something a la Dixie Chicks, but seeing as the political issue has only come up twice thus far, I guess maybe "lead-ups" (i.e. minor polit. controversies) could segue into whatever future controversy that might come up (something major like a boycott or whatever. but touch wood, hope that doesn't happen). But yeah, my idea of "neutral" on the article was mainly "people like them, but at the same time, they're not perfect." As for the covers, I did mention that the group's supporters don't mind having so many covers, while there are others that indeed take offense to the issue. Just to bring up the "image and character" thing again. The section, if it were to be created, will be pretty short, considering they haven't made any obvious statements (i.e. not as obvious as Mr. Chou) on how the paparazzi is stupid. I mean, it's just going to be a bunch of adjectives e.g. "active", "people who like to jooke around" strung into one sentence, which is quite frankly, rather sad. - Pandacomics 07:56, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When I see them on TV, their personality is so loud and clear... yet reading this article hasn't quite made that come across very clearly.

It's pretty hard to cite television shows / Youtube, but I will try with the lyrical content. - Pandacomics 21:02, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I inserted an image section, but I'm thinking that maybe something along the lines of "other ventures" would make sense, because I don't see a smooth transition between television/film and endorsements, after which we hop to image, which seems a bit absurd. But yeah, the image section is pretty...short. - Pandacomics 06:54, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I am flattered by your comments. I bought a book that talks about their days in the girl's dormitory (i.e. before they released their first album). On one hand, it'll be a pretty interesting bit of info (and would likely fall under "Background); on the other hand, the article is rather lengthy as it is. Would it be a good idea to put it in, or should I just leave it out? - Pandacomics 06:26, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, anytime! Though I must say it definitely helps to have someone write such a good Jay Chou article :] Arsonal 19:57, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hate this section.

[edit]

The "Background" section is really killing me. I can't believe I wrote it, haha. There are so many awkward phrases. And I was just wondering, would it be a good idea to insert a paragraph about the Girls Dorm experience? Part of me says yes, because it would transition into the Musical Career part nicely. The other part of me says no, because the article is really long right now. Another question I have is about the Musical Style section, and the Lyrics part. I want to expand it to include some of their songs which include "nonsense lyrics", but me giving the songs that term would be in violation of original research (because I am terming the lyrics as such). Also, "Album Structure." Should I destroy that section? Because it doesn't serve much of a use other than defining what a zhuda is. - Pandacomics 19:58, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the input. I annihilated some of the excessive detail in the contest section, so now it reads a lot better. As for the childhood, that information really is best suited for the members' individual pages. The background is on the history of the group, not the members. As for the nonsense lyrics, I wanted to point out on the article that some songs are comprised of (surprise, surprise) nonsense lyrics. For example, one song is pieced together using titles of Jay Chou songs, whereas another uses rao kouling as part of a verse, and another one uses a bunch of wuxia terms and character names. The songs, then, don't make much as lyrical sense, since poetry wasn't the lyricist's original intention (for those particular songs anyway). - Pandacomics 15:46, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The DJ's over at RTHK (namely Angela Au) made a web drama with Jay lately, cleverly named "No Secrets" based on the film, so I have no idea how to include that in the filmography seeing it's based on the web. Pandacomics 17:10, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
