Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Sullivangoss, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! --- Possibly 20:51, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Longhair\talk 20:56, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

I understand that my username cannot be the name of my business. I do own a gallery, but I am also an art historian who thinks it is important to have this information on Wikipedia. So, I am trying to create wikipages for artists from Santa Barbara. I am NOT trying to create a page that will be a commercial benefit to my gallery. I am just trying to help preserve the legacy of our city's artists. So, I am very happy to make sure I comply with the wikipedia pillars, and was not aware that I was in any danger of violating them. If you can tell me more precisely how I am in violation, I will certainly remove the problematic text and will avoid the mistake(s) in the future. I am not being paid to make these pages. I am doing it in my free time. Thanks for your timeSullivangoss (talk) 21:33, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Your new username choice seems to be acceptable. Wikipedia has articles, not mere pages. Your draft has much promotional language; " His paintings tip toe on the line between abstract and realist, yet they are always evocative of a certain sense of place". You edited about an artist from your gallery. Please read conflict of interest and paid editing and explain how your future edits will be consistent with those policies, and also describes any other topics you might edit about as a general contributor. You don't have to be specifically paid to create articles to be a paid editor; any form of relationship with compensation triggers the disclosure requirements. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 22:02, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please understand that Wikipedia is not a place to merely tell about someone or to merely document things; a Wikipedia article about an artist must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the person, showing how they meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable creative professional. 331dot (talk) 22:02, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(Non-administrator comment) @Sullivangoss: If you own the gallery Sullivan Goss, and you are making a page on one of your artists, you meet our definition of a paid editor as far as I can see. You are the owner of the business; in creating a page here, you are also creating a promotional benefit for your business. Anyway, please pass any articles related to your COI through WP:AFC, and declare your COI properly should you be unblocked. --- Possibly 22:17, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Thanks for your comments. This is very helpful. I cannot help but be the owner of the gallery, but I'm also the best/only person who would create these pages... unless I was to explicitly pay someone else. I'll go to the wp:AFC and try to jump through the proper hoops. How to do get back to the talk page for that article so I can declare the COI? Or if I place
This user has publicly declared that they have a conflict of interest regarding the Wikipedia article Hank Pitcher.
at the top of my user page will that suffice? Thanks again for your help.

Decline reason:

So, it's been three weeks now, and you have declined to answer 331dot's legitimate questions, so I'm declining this. I'll note that if you ever want to make another unblock request, you will need to request a new username - you can't have one that represents the name of your gallery, and you used the requested name for your sock account, so that's no longer a valid choice. You will also need to address the questions that have been put to you. Girth Summit (blether) 16:28, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You will have to wait and see if an admin unblocks you. At that point I can help with your user disclosure. --- Possibly 23:10, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That will suffice to declare a COI(I have added coding to suppress its function in your request). If you are "the only person" who can create these drafts, then it is highly likely that these persons do not meet the criteria I describe above. Typically an article is created when an independent editor takes note of a subject in an independent reliable source giving significant coverage, and that editor chooses to write about it. Paying a third party only transfers the conflict of interest and paid editing relationship to that person. 331dot (talk) 07:24, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again. I see that a Hank Pitcher article has been created, and I appreciate that. It will be very helpful to use as a template so I can avoid any problems in the future. What final steps do I need to take to finalize the change in my username, get unblocked, and put the COI to use? Sullivangoss (talk) 16:13, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(Non-administrator comment) @Sullivangoss: Yes I created the article after looking into the artist. He meets our notability guidelines, specifically for the multiple collections and the general coverage. Please follow our COI guideline and use the Hank Pitcher talk page to request any changes, should you be unblocked. --- Possibly 17:22, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not every comment needs to be an unblock request, only one open request is needed. Subsequent comments should be standard, unformatted comments. 331dot (talk) 08:53, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am confused. Part of my job is to be an art historian. Is the content of the new articles on Patricia Chidlaw or Nicole Strasburg objectionable by wikipedia standards? I am trying to create drafts of pages with these standards in mind while I am waiting to have my username to be changed/unblocked so I can take the steps outlined above. So far, I have been given direction to fix previous errors, but not been given the power to correct them. I am NOT trying to get around the block or do anything objectionable. I'm just not sure how I can add legitimate articles to wikipedia on artists that I happen to work with. If you think this is impossible, than say so, and I will stop trying, but the art historian part of me sees this effort as valid, important, and noncommercial. Please clarify. Thanks.

Why did you create and use the other account? The block is on you as a person, not just your account, you cannot edit with any account or IP address until this block is removed. The content was deleted because you created it while getting around this block. 331dot (talk) 08:40, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would also ask if you intend to write about any artists that have nothing to do with your gallery. 331dot (talk) 08:42, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd like to follow-up to ask about that sock. Unlike most paid editors, reading through I was actually leaning towards working to unblock you, since you clearly could write about these individuals, so long as you could demonstrate an ability to ignore your own personal knowledge of them, and purely include what secondary sources were saying, coupled with a willingness to work with our more complex rules for paid editors. However, the use of an alternate account when you had been blocked indicates a more broad concern we might have that you would follow our other rules should they prove too onerous.
