Thank you for your message. Please see WP:N for more information on how to improve your article. Suggestion: Read the article with the mindset of someone, like maybe a juvenile, who has never heard of the subject and knows nothing about dreams. Cheers! Stella, thanks, I have been working to improve this article by adding context, as you suggested, and pasted below is a draft, with the new context added in bold. Could you let me know what you think? Too much context, too little? Thanks! (Tarpoon88 (talk) 10:30, 3 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Revision:

Daniel Joseph Nadler is a researcher, inventor, and financial writer at Harvard University. In 2012 he was featured on CNN's What's Next, a program profiling "forward-looking thinkers in the fields of tech, science and social change…[and] the big ideas and events that will help shape our collective future" for his pioneering work and research in the area of using automated night-time audio broadcasts to influence dream content.[1] As a financial writer, his analysis of currency and equity markets has been frequently published in the financial media, including the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.[2] [3]

Section: Sleep and Dream Research

In 2011 Nadler received a fellowship at Harvard's Mind/Brain/Behavior Initiative to study sleep-dependent learning, a field of research that examines how sleep consolidates[1] and optimizes the layout of procedural memories, and how this process plays a critical part in learning new skills, such as playing a musical instrument. Previously, researchers have discovered evidence that the experience of dreaming itself—the successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that mainly occur during [1] the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep (when brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake, when muscle tone and EEG readings are low, and when rapid and random eye movement during sleep takes place)—might be related to the process of learning, for example, as a way the brain “rehearses” its reactions to important or threatening scenarios, such as being chased, or confronting a difficult problem.

In 2012, Nadler adapted research that showed that during rapid eye movement sleep, participants' dreams could memorably altered by suggestive recorded readings of spoken words, into technical software for mobile devices that could replicate these studies on a large scale.[1][4] According to CNN, this technology could have implications for reducing nightmares, and allowing people to "program studying and learning" into their dreams.[1]

Nadler's work on dream research has gained substantial international media attention, including the New York Times, CNN, USA Today, and the BBC, as well as national news stations in the United States, France, Germany, and Italy.[5][1][4][6] [7][8][9] [edit]

Further work needed

[edit]

I accepted the Nadler article because it is good enough to pass a possible AfD discussion and remain in main space--he clearly meets the WP:GNG. However, a good deal of further work is needed. I have begun it, with some reorganization and abridgment. ( Wikipedia articles are intended to be concise--the necessary background to his work is described in the appropriate articles, and need not be repeated. His various media appearances can be presented best simply as references, without detailed elaboration. Links are needed to Wikipedia articles that will give necessary background, but not every possible word, and are not usually repeated. )

The following is still needed.

  1. The basic biography: where and when he was born; heis high school, his college & graduate work, with degrees and dates. His successive positions, with dates (all of this in paragraph, not list format).
  2. His exact position at harvard. An explanation of this is needed to make clear the relationship between the dream research and the financial analysis.
  3. His significant publications need to be listed, divided by field. This is normally done in list format,. with full bibliographic references.

I count on you to do this in the next few days--if not, I will try to follow u at least minimally, but it is your responsibility. DGG ( talk ) 05:34, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
