Fair use album covers[edit]

See Wikipedia:Non-free content#Acceptable images, bullet point 1: "Cover art from various items, for identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary)." Now see Wikipedia:Non-free content#Unacceptable images, bullet point 1: "An album cover as part of a discography, as per the above.". I understand and thanks for willing to discuss it. The issue of use of non-free album covers has recently become embiggened.

Pete Rock#Selected discography uses the album covers to illustrate the albums in question, yes, but there's no commentary on the albums beyond some basic information. The use of Image:Soulsurvivor.jpg on Soul Survivor (album) is fair use. The use of the same image on Pete Rock is not fair use because because that article doesn't include commentary on the album; the most that is said about it is in the Solo career section. {{Non-free album cover}} doesn't mention the commentary requirement, but there's only so much that can be crammed onto a template, so there's a link to Wikipedia:Non-free content, where the commentary requirement is mentioned.

Wikipedia:Manual of Style (lists of works)#Discographies shows the MOS standard for discographies, but it's pretty minimalist. The 'notes' portion would be where chart positions and sales figures would go in that format. On a quick search, I found Dr. Dre discography. It uses a similar layout to Domino (producer)#Discography, keeping all the same information in bullet points. --Geniac 14:34, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL.
