Copyright questions[edit]

Glad to have welcomed you.  :) This crazy site can never have enough good editors, especially those with more eclectic interests. I'm truly pleased that you've established an account.

As for the copyright issue, most photos, unless they're public domain, are pretty much copyrighted but many can be used in a fair use manner under the site's license. Admittedly, this is one of those gray areas that's probably best answered by another admin or a bureaucrat. Sorry I wasn't much help in this instance, but I check my talk page more than my personal e-mail, so if there's anything else you need, give a holler. - Lucky 6.9 00:13, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CNF/El Yunque[edit]

While El Yunque is technically the mountain and not the forest, given that people tend to refer to the forest as El Yunque you should include some information to that effect (or maybe a tag at the top saying something like This article refers to the mountain, for information on the forest typically called El Yunque see Caribbean National Forest. Image copyright problem RE: Image:Ziggy-cartoon.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ziggy-cartoon.jpg. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law. We need you to specify two things on the image description page:

  • The copyright holder, and
  • The copyright status

The copyright holder is usually the creator. If the creator was paid to make this image, then their employer may be the copyright holder. If several people collaborated, then there may be more than one copyright holder. If you created this image, then you are the copyright holder.

Because of the large number of images on Wikipedia, we've sorted them using image copyright tags. Just find the right tag corresponding to the copyright status of this image, and paste it onto the image description page like this: {{TAGHERE}}.

There are 3 basic ways to licence an image on Wikipedia:

  • The copyright holder can also release their work into the public domain. See here for examples.
  • Images from certain sources are automatically released into the public domain. This is true for the United States, where the Wikimedia servers are located. (See here for images from the government of the USA and here for other governments.) However, not all governments release their work into the public domain. One exception is the UK (see here for images from the UK government). Non-free licence governments are listed here.
  • Also, in some cases, an image is copyrighted but allowed on Wikipedia because of fair use. To see a) if this image qualifies, and b) if so, how to tag it, see Wikipedia:Fair use.

For more information, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Please remember that untagged images are likely to be deleted.

If you have uploaded other images without including copyright tags, please go back and tag them. Also, please tag all images that you upload in the future.

P.S: I also see that nearly all the images you have uploaded have been tagged as public domain even though all the sources are clearly copyrighted webpages. This is not apropriate. Please read this section carefully, and then read all the linked pages. Then please fix all the images you have uploaded, by providing apropriate copyright tags ASAP, otherwise they will soon be deleted. Re: Image Copyrights & Licenses[edit]

Hi, looking better. Well idealy all the copyrighted ("fair use") images should also include a fair use rationale, this is not currently that heavily enforced as there are tonnes of images without even source and copyright tags, but it's defenently a good idea to add, time allowing.

Also I don't know if you have finished going though the images (there are a lot), but I found these that still have some problems:

Tagged as "some website"[edit]

These still need proper copyright tags. Since they don't seem to fit any of the "blanket" categories I think {{Non-free fair use in|whatever}} + a rationale would work nicely.

Tagged as "public domain" or "copyright free use"[edit]

As far as I can tell all of these are actualy copyrighted (well possevly with the exception of Image:M-jimenez.png, it looks old, hard to tell how old though). Remember unless an image is explicitly released into the public domain (or is very very old and one or two other cases such as work of the US federal government), the default is to asume it's copyrighted even if there is no copyright notice where you found it. Also if you don't provide a source for an image it can not be confirmed to be public domain either. Same with "copyright free use", the image page have to "prove" that the copyright holder has indeed released all rights to the image. Most likely all of these will need to be re-tagged with an apropriate "fair use" tag (see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use), and have a source added if they don't already have one.

Tagged as "creative commons share alike"[edit]

This one is tagged as "creative commons", but there is no source. You have to point to the source of the image, and show where the author of the image has released it under this license. If the author have not released it under this license this tag can not be used, and you have to find a suitable fair use tag for ths one too. And the source too either way. Souce is always needed. It doesn't have to be a website, but you have to say where the image is from and preferably who own it and such.

Thanx again for helping with the image licensing issue. I think I'm finished with them, but I'd be grateful if you can check some of them, specially this ones: Image:M-jimenez.png (I took this image from the Wikipedia French server), and Image:Coliseo-avion.JPG (this one was taken by me. Hi again, Image:Coliseo-avion.JPG looks like it have more than enough info now, very nice. As for Image:M-jimenez.png yeah, it seems to be PD. I checked the French wiki and found a link to the same image on commons however (Image:Jiménez de la Espada 1831-1898.png). Seeing as files from commons can be used on any Wikimedia project that makes the version you copied here kinda redundant though. So I have listed it for deletion on WP:IFD and edited the article to use the shared file instead (hope you don't mind, I just don't like unnessesary redundancy). While on that subject: if you plan to upload more free images in the future (like Image:Coliseo-avion.JPG) consider uploading them to commons instead. That way they can also be used on the other language Wikipedias, Wikinews, Wikibooks, Wikisource etc etc. Simmilarly it's a good idea to do a few searches on Commons when looking for images, they might just have it (or something close enough) already.
These three still probably need a different tag (or some "proof" that they have no limitations attached) though, Image:Levittown-tanque.jpg, Image:Mona-passage.jpg and Image:Tres-picachos.JPG, otherwise it's looking good to me. --Sherool (talk) 20:27, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to build a country-box, but we'll work on it :)

Hola Thief! You gave me the best part of my day today with your message! It's great to know you're gonna be part of the project. Well, about the country-box, sin idea, hermano, I don't know how to do those things anyways but I guess I could copy it from the Puerto Rico page. Im Boricua too. My objective is not only to have a page where we can talk about things to do relating to Puerto Rico, but also have writers from other countries join, so they can research and learn about Puerto Rican society and history. I'm a member of wikipeoject:La Raza, Wikiproject:Argentina, Wikiproject:Cuba and Wikiproject:Mexico also, and the thing is, Well this is my opinion only of course but I feel that I can help start a real unity among Hispanos by working on making other Hispanics interested in Puerto Rico and viceversa. So, don't feel weird if you see a non Puerto Rican writer in the list..lol! Y de que pueblo eres? Im from Caguas, a Criollo de pura cepa. I'm an independist but not hard to the core, I mean I also think if a politician is a good person he or she should win regardless of party. As a matter of a fact, two politicians I admire a lot, Ramon Luis Rivera and Alejandro Cruz, were PNP candidates (I wrote about Cruz last night). So as far as politics goes Im cool with candidates of all parties as long as they are good people, even if they don't share my idealism. Hmmnn I don't know why I got into that, I don't mean for people to tell me their ideologies, after all, that should be yopur private right. So do you like sports? I absolutely love boxing and basketball. Im the rare breed of Puerto Rican that puts baseball in third place..lol. Growing up, my favorite athletes were Wilfred Benitez, Wilfredo Gomez, Mario Morales and Ruben Rodriguez. Of course, now Tito joined that list! Well, thats it for now. I hope to hear from you soon!!
