Literacy by country (2013 UN Human Development Report)

Hello Thisismyusername1994. I'm an online ambassador from your Global Youth Studies class. I'm glad to see that you're planning on addressing literacy as a topic. As you've noted, that article could benefit from details from non-Western countries, and especially those from the Global South. According to the literacy map on the right, some of the countries with the highest rates of illiteracy are in Africa. If you were feeling especially ambitious, Wikipedia could use an overview article for Literacy in Africa. If you plan to edit the article on literacy, I believe that the best countries to focus on would generally be those in red (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, South Sudan, Afghanistan) and those in yellow (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Chad, Ethiopia). Please note that the article on literacy is already quite detailed and that any additions need to be properly sourced. Regardless, I hope you take a look at the list of countries by literacy rate. Hi Thisismyusername1994 & Gobonobo! I wanted to get G's feedback and think through next steps for TIMUN94. I agree that the sections on Africa and South America are underdeveloped. I also hope that TIMUN94 can explore how different locations conceptualize of literacy based on context (e.g., Friere). I am not sure how to recommend editing. It looks as thought the literacy article is, in it's list, replicating in some way the list that Gobonobo posted in the comment above. Is extending this really the best use of TIMUN94's editing muscle? Would it be better for you, TIMUN94, to research the meanings of literacy and link readers to the table? Or organize the list/table organized by region? Or another idea? The lengthy list in the original literacy article feels cumbersome to me. Thoughts?

My only feedback is that I would like you to find at least three peer reviewed scholarly articles to use in addition to the statistics you have located. I am happy to talk to you more about this. You are ready to start drafting your edits using the stats you've found. Then, you can look at extending the definition of literacy and adding scholarship about the Global South. Good work!
