Ping for new sections

Word limits
[edit]Please could you clarify whether the word limits for comments is 1000 for the whole RFC or 1000 per comment section (i.e. per question)? Thryduulf (talk) 20:10, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
- God, hadn't thought about that when I decided we were going to have to separate them, thanks! What's your thinking? I certainly don't think anyone needs 1000 for every question. I don't want to limit people's ability to make their point, just their ability to leave walls of text and have long arguments with each other. Valereee (talk) 10:02, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
- Word limits per question are going to be much easier from a practical standpoint for both commenters and moderators, and also reduces the likelihood of someone with strong opinions about only one question wall-of-texting to (try and) overwhelm someone with opinions about multiple questions. My first thought is that the arbitration system of fairly low word limits with reasonable extensions granted on request generally works quite well, so perhaps something like "300 words per question. Moderators may at their discretion grant extensions following a request on the talk page that includes a brief explanation of why it is needed". I'm not set at 300 words, but I wouldn't go lower than 200 or higher than 500. Thryduulf (talk) 12:24, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

- A further couple of thoughts - as discussion isn't going to be threaded, sometimes it's going to be necessary to quote short segments of other commenters' words for clarity so, especially at lower words limits, I would exclude them from the word count but allow moderators to trim unnecessarily long quotes. I'd also consider treating all linked page titles and usernames as one word each, especially in borderline cases - I shouldn't be penalised for referring to user:The Squire of His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom's edits at List of places in the former British Empire named for monarchs of Great Britain and the United Kingdom vs user:Kingly's edits at Monarchsville. I don't know if these need to be explicit rules or just general guidance. Thryduulf (talk) 12:38, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't want to be a dick about this. Excluding short quotes is a good idea. I'm not too worried about long usernames or article titles -- if ten words is really too much and you've got to use every possible word, just pipe it. You can pipe a ping, right? I've never actually tried. Also I was surprised at the number of people who signed every post in their own section...must just be a habit. We need a tutorial on how to keep your comments short even when you tend to write long. Valereee (talk) 21:37, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
- That tutorial seems like a good idea. I do like signed posts, even in my own section, because it gives timestamps which help with putting things into order (e.g. the reason X hasn't responded to Y's comment is because X posted first). I don't see why a piped ping wouldn't work, but it's easy to test. Ultimately a principle of "commenters: Don't take the piss and the moderators won't be a dick" seems like a very sensible (if not delicately phrased) way to operate. - Piped ping worked. :D Oh, I have no objection to signed comments in sections. But it does tend to confuse the wordcount tool. :) I think you can datestamp without signing...maybe three tildes?
