A tag has been placed on Borovi4ok requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Disambiguation link notification[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited Muhammed-Gabdulkhay Kurbangaliev, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Chita (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Bashkir language template[edit]

Hi all, I need a template for Bashkir language that would be analogous to Template:Lang-rus and would allow me to demonstrate a Bashkir word, its Romanization, transcription and an audio file from Commons.

For context, please see my latest edit at Ufa. Another user, Ezhiki, reworked it so as to render the information with available tools. Thanx all, Borovi4ok (talk) 13:56, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Template:Lang-ba is the language template used for Bashkir language. For information on how to use it, see the template documentation. Regards--Ushau97 (talk) 15:53, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ushau97,
Template:Lang-ba does not have the functionality that I need: provide Romanization, transcription and an audio file from Commons. This was why I started this discussion. Borovi4ok (talk) 07:26, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Religion in Bashkortostan[edit]

Әссәләмәғәләйкүм! I've always wanted to know about religion in your state, and I apologise in advance for any sensitivity towards you. It says in Wikipedia that it is mostly Muslim, along with a few Russian Orthodox, but I just wanted to confirm with you whether Bashkortostan is mainly Muslim (I thought that Russia as a whole was a secular-ish country, just like Australia, where I live is too!) Thank you in advance. — AWESOME meeos * ([ˈjæb.ə ət məɪ])) 10:48, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Awesomemeeos! Thank you for your question.
You are right in expecting that Bashkortostan, like the entire Russia, is secular-ish, the reason for that being the 20th century history. Back in the USSR times, any religion (including also traditional local belief systems, like shamanism) was banned.
Today, the situation in Bashkortostan is pretty much the same as elsewhere in Russia. Both Islam and Orthodox Christianity (in the appropriate ethnic communities) are experiencing some type of resurgence, but not really much. New mosques and churches are arising, and people are free to practice any type of spirituality, but most are non-religious or only nominally religious. For many Bashkirs, it is common to follow Islamic rites only when important family events happen, like birth, wedding or death.
At the same time, there are young Bashkir men who go to study to Egypt, S. Arabia etc., so they can later return to their home communities as mullahs. Older people in towns may go to Islamic Sunday schools arranged in mosques, etc. Hope this answers. Borovi4ok (talk) 08:37, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bashkir phonology[edit]

Hello Borovi4ok, In one of your edits of the Bashkir Wikipedia page, you stated that the vowels on the page are incorrect. If that is so, what are the correct vowel sounds of the Bashkir language? Do you know of a reliable source to research information on the Bashkir language? Are the consonant sounds also incorrect? I'd like to be able to improve the page regarding the language. Fdomanico51997 (talk) 05:56, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fdomanico51997, thanks for your message.

1) I don't know any reliable sources on Bashkir phonology :( This is the big problem, and this is why I am shy editing the Wikipedia page you are referring to. Generally, it's a shame that a language spoken by ~1.5mln people is underexplored.

2) I am a linguistics major, I and have my own ideas of how Bashkir sounds can be represented in IPA. Please check out [1] - I have provided, based on my own understanding, the 'Pronunciation' sections for all Bashkir terms there.

3) Also on en.wikt, there are 66 Bashkir entries with spoken pronunciation examples. I would be happy if anyone would endeavor to establish the proper IPA statements for Bashkir words, based on what is actually heard in the examples.

4) The Bashkir consonants. What the Wikipedia page states is ~80% true and accurate. Please write to me if you would like to cooperate with me to improve this.

5) The Bashkir vowels. As I said, there are problems here, primarily around the mid vowels. We can discuss this in detail. Borovi4ok (talk) 10:02, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to discuss the vowel sounds in detail. There is also a source that I came across on the page for the Bashkir language. It is "Bashkir Manual" by Nicholas Poppe. It is a bit complex in how it discusses the vowel sounds, but maybe you will be able to determine the vowel quantities. The source is available online, and I will provide you the link for the source.

http://kitaptar.bashkort.org/files/Bashkir%20manual.pdf Fdomanico51997 (talk) 22:32, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
I know Poppe's manual, and have looked into it again now.
The description of consonants there is fine, and can be used to improved the Wikipedia article (which also needs to be done).
I cannot agree to the description of vowels there, I'm afraid. The verbal descriptions are OK ("low-back, wide, slightly rounded", the approximations ("Acoustically resembles Swedish u") should be dismissed. I cannot agree to the provided IPA values; this problem is especially relevant in respect to the 4 mid-high vowels, which are spelled as о, ө, ы, э/е.
I suggest that you check how I've been doing the IP transcriptions for Bashkir at en.wikt (using the link I provided above). When I was starting to contribute there, I spent quite some time trying to figure out the IPA values. IMHO they can be improved by a qualified phonetician, ideally using specialized software.
Write me what you think of this. Borovi4ok (talk) 08:44, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be able to fix the vowel sounds? Or can I replace them with the vowel sounds you provided in your wiktionary pronunciations? Should the following vowels [ø], [o], [e], be replaced with the vowel sounds [ʏ], [ʊ], [ɪ]? Also, the fourth vowel did not seem to have an issue being already phonologically transcribed as [ɯ], but perhaps the [a] back vowel should be transcribed as [ɑ]. I have read your IPA transcriptions for vocabulary in the Bashkir language. Are you a qualified phonetician? Also, what improvements can be made for the consonant sounds of the language? Fdomanico51997 (talk) 22:05, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for cooperation.
No, I am not a qualified phonetician, I am only using what I know from my university course in phonetics, and trusting my ears. A hands-on, equipped research is perhaps the only proper way forward. Before that is done, I suggest I use what I suggest.
Yes, please, replace the four vowels to [ʏ̞], [ʊ̞], [ɪ̞], [ɯ̞]. Please mind the the undertack diacritics below each of these - they are important, as these 4 vowels are in fact close-mid.
After this, I will see how we can improve further. Thanks! Borovi4ok (talk) 08:52, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
