Overlinking[edit]

Hello, and welcome to editing Wikipedia. I hope you have a successful time here. However, there's a point about links in articles which it will be helpful for you to know. Generally speaking an article should have a link to another article (known as a "Wikilink") only in one of the following situations. Firstly, if the link goes to a page which has further information on the subject of the article containing the link. Secondly, if the link goes to an article which provides an explanation of a term which is used in the linking article and for which readers are likely to need an explanation. It is a common mistake among new editors to add links for words which appear in an article but which don't need explanation. For example, nobody reading the article Rarbach is likely to need to look up what "river" means in order to understand that article, nor does the article river provide any further information about the Rarbach. Such unnecessary wikilinks are not just no helpful, they can actually be harmful, because research has established that the more unhelpful links an article contains, the less likely readers are to find the helpful ones.
