As like most of the CPI(M) politicians, Rajendrababu also entered into active politics through Students' Federation of India. He was also elected as the chairman of the Kerala University Union.[4]

As the mayor of Kollam city

Rajendrababu became the mayor of Kollam followed by the removal of N. Padmalochanan from the post by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) after he attended a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh function happened in the city.[5] At that time, Rajendrababu was the elected member from Uliyakovil East ward. The mayor election's result was a shocking one for the Left Democratic Front as they lost four votes and his opponent Mr. Kattil of United Democratic Front, won one of them.[6][7]
