Velvet Buzzsaw is an upcoming American horror film written and directed by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen and John Malkovich.

It will have its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival on January 27. It is scheduled to be released on February 1, 2019, by Netflix, with a limited theatrical run.

Premise

After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

Cast

Production

In June 2017, it was announced Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo had been cast in the then untitled film, with Dan Gilroy writing and directing the film, while Jennifer Fox will serve as a producer, Netflix will produce and distribute the film.[3][4] Speaking with Business Insider in November 2017, Gilroy teased the project saying:

It's set in the world of contemporary art in Los Angeles, and its got a Robert Altman-like large ensemble cast. It's got a The Player vibe to it. There's a large cast and we're moving around from person to person as we move through this world. The story is being told through these different characters.[5]

In January 2018, it was announced the title was Velvet Buzzsaw.[6] In March 2018, Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich and Billy Magnussen joined the cast of the film.[7][8]

Filming

Principal photography began on March 5, 2018, in Los Angeles, California.[9]

Release

It will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2019.[10] It is scheduled to be released on February 1, 2019, along with a limited theatrical run.[11]
