From 2000 until 2008 Omelyan had a career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.[2] He then worked in the embassy of Ukraine in Vienna, Austria.[2] Omelyan switched for two years to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.[2] Then he returned to the Foreign Ministry. In September 2018 the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine started an investigation on suspicion of illegal enrichment claiming Omelyan assets, which included $90,000 in cash and a BMW car, exceeded what he would have earned as a civil servant since the year 2000.[3] They also alleged that he did not declare assets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars across 2015 and 2016.[3] Omelyan denied the allegations and claimed that the investigation was politically motivated and intended to discredit the government ahead of the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election.[3]
