Weili Zhang (born August 13, 1989) is a Chinese mixed martial artist. She was the former Kunlun Fight strawweight champion and currently competes in the strawweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where she is the reigning UFC Strawweight Champion.

Background

Zhang was born in Hebei, China. She started training Sanda, Shuai Jiao and later Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) after watching others practicing BJJ in the gym where she worked as a fitness instructor, and she then later transitioned to MMA.[4][5]

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Zhang made her professional MMA debut in 2013. She fought primarily in Kunlun Fight and Top FC for most of her early career. She fought 13 times between 2016 and 2017. She amassed a record 16-1, with a 16 fight winning streak, prior to joining the UFC.[6]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Zhang made her promotion debut on August 4, 2018 at UFC 227 against Danielle Taylor.[7] She won the fight via unanimous decision.[8]

On November 24, 2018, Zhang faced Jessica Aguilar at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Ngannou 2.[9] She won the fight via a submission in round one.[10]

Zhang faced Tecia Torres on March 3, 2019 at UFC 235.[11] She won the fight via unanimous decision.[12]

Zhang faced Jessica Andrade for the UFC Women's Strawweight Championship on August 31, 2019 at UFC on ESPN+ 15.[13] She won the fight via first round technical knockout to become the new Strawweight champion and the first Chinese champion in UFC history.[14] The win also earned Zhang her first Performance of the Night bonus award.[15]
