Widzew Łódź (Polish pronunciation: [ˈvidzɛv ˈwut͡ɕ]), is a professional Polish football club based in Łódź, Poland. The club was founded in 1910 and named after the "Widzew" district of the city where it is based; its home is the Widzew Stadium at 138 Pilsudski street. Widzew has won four Polish league championships in 1981, 1982, 1996 and 1997. The team's official colors are red-white-red. Their nicknames are Czerwona Armia (Red Army), Czerwono-biało-czerwoni (Red-white-red boys). Widzew currently competes in the Ekstraklasa (Polish first division).
In 2008-09, the club won the Polish second division but was barred from joining the Ekstraklasa by the PZPN.[1] The club had its initial appeals rejected, however, an Arbitration Tribunal later returned a verdict in the club's favor which led Widzew to file a request for immediate reinstatement to the Ekstraklasa.[2] However, the PZPN would not permit the club to join the in-progress Ekstraklasa so Widzew continued to compete in the second division while pursuing compensation.[3] On May 16, 2010, Widzew again secured promotion to the Ekstraklasa with a 6-1 away win over Sandecja Nowy Sącz which had previously been undefeated on home turf.[4]
