Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors are volunteers who provide face-to-face support to university students on how to edit Wikipedia, work with academics to incorporate Wikipedia assignments into classrooms, help recruit new Wikipedia contributors on campus, and participate in real life activities in support of free knowledge. Campus Ambassadors are part of the UK Wikipedia Ambassador Program being coordinated by Wikimedia UK and are required to attend a training in order to make them more familiar with doing Wikipedia outreach on campus. The estimated time commitment is approximately 3-5 hours a week, with some variations throughout the semester. Ambassadors not attached to Wikipedia teaching assignments should expect to coordinate or participate in recruiting events and outreach. Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors can be undergraduate students, graduate students, university staff members, faculty members, or anyone geographically close to the university -- the main qualification is that you must enjoy teaching people and spreading your passion for free knowledge.

Campus Ambassadors will:

  1. Provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills
  2. Consult with academics around designing and implementing Wikipedia assignments
  3. Organize engaging on-campus events to encourage people to edit (and continue editing) Wikipedia
  4. Help identify and recruit other interested academics and Ambassadors
  5. Represent Wikipedia and the Ambassador program
  6. Communicate with other stakeholders (Wikimedia UK, fellow Ambassadors, the Steering Committee, etc.)

Getting involved[edit]

  • Interested ambassadors - If you want to become a Campus Ambassador, which requires attending a training event provided by Wikimedia UK, please add yourself as an "Interested Campus Ambassador" to the school or university at which you are available. If it is not listed yet, you can add it to the bottom of this page. You can also get involved with the Wikipedia Ambassador Program by applying to become an Online Ambassador, which is open to friendly and experienced Wikipedians and does not require attending an ambassador training event.
  • Lecturers - If you are interested in working with Wikipedia Ambassadors to run Wikipedia assignments in your classes, add yourself as an "Interested instructor" on the interest list for your school or university. If your institution is not listed yet, you can add it to the bottom of this page .

If you are interested in applying to become an ambassador please send an e-mail to Toni Sant (User:Toni_Sant_(WMUK)) explaining a little bit about your interest in participating with the programme.
