Dublin City University Wikipedia editathon: workshop for staff and students on contributing to Wikipedia
[edit]Introduction
[edit]DCU Library will host a Wikipedia editathon giving staff and students an introduction to contributing to Wikipedia. An editathon is an “organized event where editors edit and improve a specific topic or type of content, typically including basic editing training for new editor”. Staff and students with all levels of experience with Wikipedia or none are all welcome. Guests from outside the university are also welcome: contact us to arrange access to the library.
Here we will focus on improving and updating pages related to the university: something everyone in DCU knows something about. See our list of suggested articles (and feel free to add to this).
Photos
[edit]Date and location
[edit]- Tuesday, 28 February, 15:00 – 17:00.
- Mentoring Suite, Ground Floor, O’Reilly Library, DCU Glasnevin Campus.
- Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.
- Wi-Fi and power sockets will be provided but attendees will need to bring their own device. Students can borrow a laptop in the library, subject to availability.
Benefits for attendees
[edit]- an opportunity to meet, work and share knowledge with other staff and students from different DCU campuses, schools and units
- learn about how Wikipedia works
- gain experience in collaborative writing
- share and discuss what you know about the university and learn something new
Event outline
[edit]The event organisers will kick things off with an outline of the principles of Wikipedia and will demonstrate some of the basics of contributing to Wikipedia, such as:
- simple edits and corrections
- adding citations
- uploading photos
We will also discuss Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy and instances where it might not be appropriate for DCU staff and students to edit certain content.
Then everyone can get to work editing, individually or groups - whatever suits. You'll be able to quickly get advise and support from those around you.
We will provide print handouts and links to online tutorials, if needed.
We’ll conclude with an exit discussion on what we’ve learnt and any plans for future work on the pages.

Lend a hand
[edit]It would be great if attendees with experience contributing to Wikipedia could lend a hand informally helping others on the day. No other duties involved. If you'd like to help, then when registering also add your username to the list below using ~~~~
Before the event
