world championships[edit]

how many team sports have the world championships by national teams?--95.235.183.157 (talk) 15:07, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As opposed to what? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 15:38, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose they might be thinking of the World Series which is limited to North American teams. Though yes, the question is a bit unclear. Dismas|(talk) 16:42, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The way the question is worded leads me to think that they are asking about events like the FIFA World Cup where players (who play for individual teams, during the rest of the year) come together to play under their countries flags. You will find some answers at Category:World championships. The fact that the Olympics now allow professional athletes can confuse the situation. MarnetteD|Talk 17:25, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Re: "As opposed to what", one example would be the Formula 1 World Championship, where the teams, though having an official nationality where their Licence is registered, do not actually represent those nations (for one thing, there can be several teams with the same nationality). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 185.74.232.130 (talk) 18:11, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Another one like the Formula 1 would be the various Grand Tour cycling events, where the teams are sponsors and the team members can be from most anywhere. In baseball, the World Baseball Classic is staged every few years, and is the closest thing to a national teams tournament. The World Series has players from everywhere baseball is played at a high level, but at present the MLB franchises are all based in North America. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:15, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The UCI Road World Championships – Men's road race generally has many top cyclists from the Tour de France etc. competing in their national colours. jnestorius(talk) 20:02, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The Olympic Games have national teams, as do events like the soccer and cricket World Cups, as well as sports like figure skating. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:30, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If a team sport has an event called a world championship then it's nearly always for national teams. List of world sports championships and Template:Main world championships has many examples. I don't know whether anyone has attempted to make a complete count. It would depend on definitions in some cases. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:28, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
