December 12[edit]

Pold.[edit]

I've been reading, not for the first time, The Nebuly Coat by J. Meade Falkner. At one point, a character is looking over a bill from a shoemaker that refers to "semi-pold. lace boots" (you can see the passage by searching for it here). For some reason I'm drawing a blank on the meaning of the abbreviation "pold." It will no doubt seem obvious once someone points it out; but can anyone suggest the proper expansion of this abbreviation? Deor (talk) 18:51, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-polished ? Xuxl (talk) 19:03, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly seems likely. A Google search shows that term "semi-polished" does appear in current ads for boots and shoes. Thanks for the suggestion. Deor (talk) 19:35, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
