July 12[edit]

Just Curious[edit]

Has there ever been a case at WP:AfC where an article that was submitted was worthy to be a Good Article or even an A-class or Featured one? ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 19:51, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How would it even get that far? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:07, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Who knows. Of course, it would have to be reviewed to see if it was GA-or-better-class but who knows. @Baseball Bugs, things can be mysterious in AfC. ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 05:14, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's about 4k FA and GA, not sure how many are former FA/GA, it would be hard to know. That said, there's a first time for anything - AquilaFasciata (talk | contribs) 16:36, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Quite simply, none have ever done so, as both GA and FA have extensive review process, and an article would need to be an article (i.e. not in the draft space) to be reviewed by the GA or FA process. That being said, I have created articles that with minimal editing by myself and/or others, later got passed by GA. AFC, remember, is an optional process an no one is required to go through it. You can just create an article. Regarding quick passing on to GA, the article Henry Martin Tupper was created, by me, on February 4, 2010, and was essentially completed by me on February 6, with very little edits by others. It was nominated, and passed, GA review by February 22, with almost no additional editing. Now, while I didn't use AFC (the process didn't exist then, and notably, even though it exists now, no one has to use to it create articles) had I used AFC to create a draft of the article, the article would have been submitted to AFC review in the state it was in on February 6, and then it would have passed GA essentially unchanged from that state. So it could happen. Functionally, however, AFC is mostly used by noobs who don't know how to choose good subjects and write good Wikipedia articles, so I doubt that any has happened that way. People who know how to properly write a quality Wikipedia article generally just do that. --Jayron32 18:47, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Relativity: Robert Roberts (author), Spider-Man (2018 video game), Shorwell helmet, Parliament of 1327, Archie vs. Predator and The Thrill Book are feature articles created via the AFC.
Disallowance and reservation in Canada, Death of Cooper Harris, Qilombo and Shovel Knight Dig are the most recent articles created via the AFC to be promoted to GA. 115.188.159.190 (talk) 10:39, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at Shorwell helmet and it looks to me like there were several contributors and this seems to have been its state when it was moved from AfC [1] which I think is far from GA let alone FA. To be fair, it's probably a bad example since it's from 2013, I think AfC has been more backlogged in recent years likely increasing the chance an article could at least be more or less GA before coming out of AfC. Of course it also depends on the editor since while technically an article doesn't belong to the editor who created it, most editors will refrain from touching a draft being actively worked on so if the editor doesn't submit it for review, they could easily get it up to way more than needed for main space before it's reviewed or moved into main space. That said, I mostly agree with Jayron32 except to point out AfC is also supposed to be used by editors with a CoI regardless of experience. Even the best editors often have problems completely putting aside a strong CoI likely affecting their creations. However editors may have different definitions of a COI so I can easily imagine an editor particularly concerned about ensuring fairness and managing perceptipns might use AFC to create an article on e.g. someone they barely knew 20 years ago who they haven't communicated with since and don't have a particularly strong opinion on. In such a case, an experienced editor may very well end up creating an article good enough to be something close to GA while in draft space. Nil Einne (talk) 15:19, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
