Review of User:Sibadd/Arestides Metallinos

I am a British citizen with a second home in Corfu, Greece living in the village of Ano Korakiana on the island. I have, over the last year, come across the almost unknown work of the self-taught village sculptor Arestides Zacharias Metallinos (1908-1987) and, via a friendship with his family, have begun a catalogue of 250 plus works that are kept in a closed museum in the centre of the sculptor's birth village of Ano Korakiana. There are very few references to this man's work. I am currently translating two Greek academic pieces - one a book chapter - that describe this man's work. These were written in the mid-1980s while Metallinos was alive and his work evolving. I propose to reference these pieces to ensure credibility and to establish that I am not expressing opinions or working on primary sources. I would welcome constructive advice on ensuring that this artist merits the wikipedia article I have submitted in draft. Obviously such an article must include examples of the sculptor's work so I would also value advice on whether these should be submitted in the same draft, so that consideration can be given to the feasibility of the proposed wiki article about Metallinos. The reason the 'museum' that contains the sculptor's work is closed to the public, despite the artist's wish at the time of his death, is because his family cannot afford, under current economic conditions in Greece, to maintain and curate a public institute. I believe Wikipedia could play a part in making the unique work of a talented man accessible, at least via the internet. I have submitted other articles to Wikipedia - two of them biographies. The immediate problem, as pointed out by the reviewer, is that your draft doesn't cite any sources at all. Please add references to the sources you used to write the text so far - see WP:Referencing for beginners. Another issue is your prose - take a good hard look at just how long the first sentence is, try to write in a more formal factual style. Dear Sir or Madam:

Recently, I submitted an article for review on an architect from Gloucester, Massachusetts named Halfdan M. Hanson. It is still in the queue. Fortunately, I have been able to get permission from Hanson's granddaughter to use a photograph of him which is in her possession. The photograph has been used by Historic New England and is on their website, and has also been used by Martha Stewart Magazine.

Of course, I have reviewed Wikimedia's requirements for uploading photographs. Secondary to the complexity of copyright laws and the fact that Historic New England is currently using a copy of the photo on their website, I just wanted to make sure I was following the appropriate steps in citing the source of the photo. On January 23, I sent an email regarding this question to Wikimedia Commons, but have not received a reply. I appreciate your time and any assistance with this matter.

Just a reminder: Commons only accepts "free content," that is, content that may be used by anyone for any purpose with few restrictions. If this permission you have been given is only specific to Wikipedia, then the image is not acceptable on Commons.

Hi. The reviewer, MatthewVanitas, left some remarks on your draft at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Zerihun Seyoum. Not only do you need references, you also need inline citations, which you have actually provided in the form of parenthetical citations. (It's possible that MatthewVanitas didn't see the parentheses.)

Other than that, you will definitely need to find more outside (that is, independent) reliable sources, otherwise this will be declined for not meeting notability requirements. --Anon126 (talk - contribs) 23:07, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Note: The reasons for a draft being declined are shown in the box at the top. If you did not read them, please do and keep this in mind if you decide to resubmit the draft and it is declined again.

You have some references, which is good, but you also need inline citations. These are notes after statements in the article that refer to the sources in the reference list. The most popular way to do this is with footnotes (see below).

Formatting references using inline citations
All information in Wikipedia articles should be verified by citations to reliable sources. Our preferred method of citation is using the "cite.php" form of inline citations, using the <ref></ref> elements. Using this method, each time a particular source is mined for information (don't copy word-for-word!), a footnote is placed in the text ("inline"), that takes one to the detail of the source when clicked, set forth in a references section after the text of the article. In brief, anywhere you want a footnote to appear in a piece of text, you place an opening <ref> tag followed by the text of the citation which you want to appear at the bottom of the article, and close with a </ref> tag. Note the closing slash ("/"). For multiple use of a single reference, the opening ref tag is given a name, like so: <ref name="name"> followed by the citation text and a closing </ref> tag. Each time you want to use that footnote again, you simply use the first element with a slash, like so: <ref name="name" />. In order for these references to appear, you must tell the software where to display them, using either the code <references/> or, most commonly, the template, {{Reflist}} which can be modified to display the references in columns using {{Reflist\|colwidth=30em}}. Per our style guidelines, the references should be displayed in a separate section denominated "References" located after the body of the article.

There are also comments about notability, which are also probably related to the draft being declined. In short (maybe even shorter than the super-simple verison), subjects of articles must have been discussed in a significant number of outside reliable sources (newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, etc.). If you can find these sources, add them to the references list.
