Vital articles improvement program |
It's right in the name: expand short Vital articles to 30 kilobytes in wikitext page size (not readable prose size) by 31 August 2022.
The articles are of a wide range of topics, ranging from natural sciences to the humanities, so don't be afraid to join! You don't need to join our Vital Articles WikiProject to participate, though doing so would be much appreciated :) The drive emphasizes on adding high-quality content and references to articles, not getting as many articles past 30kb as possible through low-quality spams. However, feel free to use tools that make semi-automated edits, such as AutoWikiBrowser and the Internet Archive bot.
Our definition of the article size is the number that you see in the edit history, not the readable prose size found in XTool. This is done both to simplify drive operations (so that we can use the robust PetScan tool) and encourage adding references as a form of content expansion. Because our ultimate goal is to make all Vital articles good and featured by 2032, we cannot neglect short and stubby Vital articles. This drive can be compared to the Project Mercury, developing preliminary skills and experience for the lunar landing.
Rewards
[edit]- At least 1 article expanded – {{Vital Barnstar}}
- User who expands articles by at least 50kb bytes – {{The Reviewer Barnstar}}
- User who expands the most articles – {{The Tireless Contributor Barnstar}}
- User who expands articles with the most amount of bytes – {{The Stub Barnstar}}
Experiences gained
[edit]- All Vital article should have two history sections: humanity's history of understanding of the topic, and the history of the topic itself. For example, in economy, the first one would be the history of economic thought and the second would be good old economic history. Subtle but important difference.
- Copying citations from other articles boost the article's byte size and quality significantly. However, make sure to only cite reliable sources and if possible, verify the info beforehand. Repeat after me: Citing is underrated. Citing is underrated.
- Don't be afraid to be bold improve these articles even if you have no idea about it beforehand. These seemingly disgruntled experts that will come at you actually want to improve the article just as much as you do, and if you can prove to them that you are willing to learn about the topic, they will be more than willing to help.
- Expanding Vital articles is difficult and harsh, but also fun. Destubbing vital articles is certainly more interesting than destubbing random articles.
- Once the hype goes away, the drive is insanely slow.
- Burnout is a thing. Take a break if you needed it.
- Only by making these practical expeditions could you learn and internalize these experiences. Sitting around at the village pump's idea lab would go nowhere in this aspect.
- Using wikitext size is unfair for those using {{sfn}} or other compact citation formats, and for those removing junk from the article. Should we use prose size + citations added on subsequent drives instead? See also: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Vital Articles/30 kB drive
- Wikitext size, however, is an absurdingly useful metric to identify poor-quality articles, maybe even better than ORES in this regard.
