Only one left to do- How does this get celebrated or closed off and noted?--Akrasia25 (talk) 17:39, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
- Usually what happens is that the list gets moved over to the completed section of the Missing encyclopedia articles Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles#Completed_goals and work begins on the next list of red links! However, before adding it there, I will see if the original person that created the list can generate a second set of MacTutor biographies from the website (as the list was created in 2005 and the site might have added new mathematicians since then). I have sent him an email so hopefully he will reply soon.Calaka (talk) 01:40, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Calaka:@Akrasia25: I finished the last one today from the 2005 list. A quick check here: http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/Indexes/Full_Chron.html shows that there are more that 2700 people while the initial list had 1869 items. This one is missing on WP Cândido Lima da Silva Dias for example. --Afernand74 (talk) 12:16, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- Good find @Afernand74 , I will see if I can get that list on the mactuors wikipedia page in a fashion similar to the original list. May need other people's help to format it properly.Calaka (talk) 12:41, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi All. I'm grabbing William Thomson. Thanks to Akrasia25 for pointing me here. Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 13:40, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, seems William Thomson (Mathematician) already exists. The reason it was still in the list is there are two entries in Wikidata for William Thomson (Mathematician). I've merged them and requested a deletion of the newer of the two pages. I'll pick someone else...Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 14:25, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- Alexander Brown, it is.Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 14:30, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

CS
[edit]I moved the crowd sourced list to a new page to make it easier to load. Afernand74 (talk) 11:11, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
Wikidata
[edit]@Calaka:@Akrasia25: I used wikidata to generate a list of missing articles. I didn't manage to get wikidata items without any pages in WP to appear on this table. I will keep looking but I am not a computer specialist :-). I . Any help will be appreciated. Afernand74 (talk) 11:11, 19 January 2019
- @Afernand74: What you did looks really impressive. I didn't know the bot existed. So if I understand correctly, the bot extracted all the red links from the crowd sourced page and there is only 98 articles left to create? Or do I misunderstand what happened? Calaka (talk) 13:18, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Afernand74:Wow. Nice bot.--Akrasia25 (talk) 13:47, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Calaka: Thanks. I used wikidata directly without using the crowd sourced page. Those are mathematicians with pages on non-english wikipedia. There should arguably notable. Mac Tutor mathematicians with no page at all are NOT listed. --Afernand74 (talk) 16:51, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Afernand74 and Calaka: And with translate and proper wiki translate attribution on their talk page we should be able to convert these quickly I would think
Cleanup
[edit]@Afernand74: How are you counting the cleanup? I counted 38 redlinks in the K-O section but you wrote 45. How do we find the other 7 missing ones> --Akrasia25 (talk) 13:28, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Akrasia25: I cut paste the previous line :-). 38 is the correct number. Thanks for pointing this out. Afernand74 (talk) 14:41, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Adding McT link
[edit]@Akrasia25: Thank you for adding the links. It is a valuable addition if the url link is properly formated. May I ask you the generate the links with a "+" instead of a white space? As it is now, unless the first name is unique, it links to dozens of pages, making it difficult to find the right page (all Williams are point to the same page for ex). Thanks Afernand74 (talk) 16:26, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Afernand74: Good point. I would have to scrub the names pretty hard first with scripts and lose your nice formatting (or put it back it). There are some duplicates also I see. I also would kill some of the DAB resolution that (you?) has been done. If you tell me which section you have not worked on yet I will go crazy on that section. Leave that to me but the A-O looks like there have been subsequent edits.--Akrasia25 (talk) 19:56, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- I have disamb all the articles I found but I focused on all red links (hours of work). I kept duplicates because there were in the original pages. I am not sure we need to have a link for every single page. Why not limit ourselves to the missing one? It would make the page faster to load and to work with. Afernand74 (talk) 17:21, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- Good for you. I agree that it is a manual effort that is taking some time. I started and stopped several times. I have an excel sheet with concatenate functions to add the mactutor links and applied it to the last set of U-Z Done so it is an automatic thing and I can not tell in excel if it is blue or red. Go ahead and delete any blue links that you think are already in there. If it's ok for you I will do the next sets in this order
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies P-T (48 articles missing) Done
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies K-O (38 articles missing) Done
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies F-J (45 articles missing) Done
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies A-E (54 articles missing) Done
And yes time to get rid of the existing blue links. They take too much time to load and I am spending time scrubbing. I will update you here as I complete a set. So far only U-Z looks like what you suggested with the + instead of space. --Akrasia25 (talk) 17:46, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Akrasia25 and Afernand74, thank you for doing an incredible job. Sorry I was away from a few days and just wanted clarification, before I do the wrong thing. So at the moment if my understanding is correct, there are 3 sources of MacTutor articles, the crowdsourced page, the biographies P-T subpages, and the bot page. Is the main goal to prune and remove the blue links from the subpages? Or should the red links be moved to main page? And the crowdsourced list is for reference only, or is that also to be pruned in the future? I wanted to remove some of the articles and put the red links on the main page but I thought I check with you both before I do anything drastic.Calaka (talk) 13:15, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- I like what Aferrnand74 did with the Bot and since it is an autogenerated list I guess we can not do too much to that list except for the hard task of writing articles. Also, let me finish adding McTutor links to the following lists before removing any names.
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies K-O (38 articles missing) Done
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies F-J (45 articles missing) Done
- Wikipedia:MacTutor archive/Biographies A-E (54 articles missing) Done
I know that the last couple have McTutor links but as Afernand pointed out they only look for the first name so I am redoing them. Not a manual thing, I just dont what to trust it completely to an excel function without checking the result.
Any thoughts on how to have two lists so it is easy for people to understand? And also to calculate the stats? --Akrasia25 (talk) 14:51, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ah you are right of course, adding the first name before we remove them is a good idea! I will wait for you to do this before removing any blue links. And to clarify, are you going to do that as well on the crowdfunded list [1] or is that more of a backup? Kind regards, Calaka (talk) 00:30, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes that is an easier list to do but very hard once someone DAB fixes it so let me add the better MacTutor links to that page as well. --Akrasia25 (talk) 02:48, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Akrasia25:@Calaka: I have asked the help from wikidata experts to properly query wikidata for missing articles with a macTutor id. The nice thing is that disambiguation is always guaranteed
- I suggest we remove the crowd-sourced list to avoid confusion. Afernand74 (talk) 10:43, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- Sounds like a fine idea. I will wait and hold on any next steps.--Akrasia25 (talk) 12:45, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- If you are talking about removing this one: [2] then I agree as I imagine it is the same as the sub lists (e.g. A-E). We are still keeping the other sub lists I imagine right?Calaka (talk) 15:47, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red
[edit]I added a column for gender so that we might get some help (and support) the Women in Red wikiproject. I thought that there would be more of a 40/60 split but doesn't look like that.--Akrasia25 (talk) 16:45, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Notabillty?
[edit]The MacTutor archive was not put together using the same criteria for Notability that we have at Wikipedia (principally WP:GNG and WP:SCHOLAR). But they obviously used their own criteria to determine these people were notable. Is that sufficient, or do we need to assess each subject for Notability ourselves as well? --Gronk Oz (talk) 21:48, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Next
[edit]I'm grabbing Andrew Young as my next WP project. Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 20:24, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- David Tweedie is next on my list. Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 16:49, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- I'm going to grab David J Tweedie as well. Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 14:49, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
- I've completed all three of these but they are still appearing on the project page, even after updating the list. Does anybody know why this happening and how to fix it? Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 18:27, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
- I don't see them on the bot generated list, but if they are on the other list and they are blue linked, then you can remove them yourself. :) Calaka (talk) 06:48, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- I just refreshed the project page and they are still there red linked. Any ideas? Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 08:23, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- Can you link the articles you created here, and then show the ones on the main page here as well? Perhaps they are spelled differently? If that is the case, you can create a redirect, in order for the links to become blue.Calaka (talk) 15:49, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
