Also, there's no game on September 13 or October 18. --Ebyabe (talk) 15:40, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- Added those to the table above. --Ebyabe (talk) 15:45, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Venue
[edit]Satchel's would be fun (and they serve gluten-free pizza), but when we were there Friday night (seated in the VW van) there was a one hour wait to be seated at 6:30. That is not likely to be better in the fall. -- Donald Albury 15:08, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Satchel's is indeed very, very busy. However, they have a place out back to hang out and drink, chat, etc. while you're waiting for your table. I don't know if I can call ahead - but I think not. They also only take cash - no cards or checks. --Moni3 (talk) 15:11, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- September schedule isn't up yet, but they usually have live music back there on Fri. and Sat. nights, 6-9. Depending on the artist(s), that might interfere with conversation (especially for me, my hearing aids don't work as well in a noisy room). -- Donald Albury 15:55, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
You know what place we're forgetting about is Gators Dockside. There's typically a short wait, but the place is huge and we put as many tables together as we want. There's also beer. I'm at work so I'll leave it up to someone to find their website, or I'll do it when I get home. Fliry Vorru (talk) 15:32, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Would that be http://www.gatorsdockside.com? María (habla conmigo) 15:58, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Satchel's might not be the best choice for a Saturday during the school year. Mellow Mushroom is not going to be a viable option; we're going to have more than five people (I know of at least one other person who will likely attend, although he hasn't responded to the invite yet). My prefs would be The Red Onion, The Swamp, and Gators Dockside. Horologium (talk) 17:46, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- From a very selfish point of view, I hate pizza, so that's why I'm against Satchel's. But if the consensus is a pizza place that's fine, I like calzones. Fliry Vorru (talk) 04:39, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- The fact that tomato sauce makes me barf was a consideration in my preferences, but I can eat white pizza. As long as there is one thing on a menu that I like, I'll be good to go. :) Horologium (talk)

- I don't know how up-to-date it is, but here's a list of locally owned restaurants --Ebyabe (talk) 00:31, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, well I included only seven choices, because if we're anything like my family, we'll sit here and look at each other and say, "What do you want to do?" "I don't know. What do you want to do?" ad nauseum. Limiting choices helps make a decision. --Moni3 (talk) 12:03, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, I shan't add any more options, there's enough variety listed. :) Me, I'm omnivorous, any of those places sounds OK to me. I'm thinking of the seating options. Tim's Thai is rather small, as I remember. I think at the other places we should be able to get a dozen seated together comfortably, which looks like the approximate attendance. --Ebyabe (talk) 01:17, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- Tim's Thai I would remove - if I remember correctly they're slow as hell. I'd also drop The Swamp, just because it sucks. Leonardo's is a good choice. Local, and good at seating large groups. Phil Sandifer (talk) 11:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

- Let's finalize this: OK, it looks like discussion has not continued for a while now. Let's try to give everyone three week notices of when and what we're doing. Why don't we just poll the option or have someone decide. I'm not trying to rush (with pure intentions), but meetups fail when the organization is done last minute... - Jameson L. Tai talk ♦ contribs 02:47, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- I saw you were bold and struck a few restaurants that had been panned here; I'm not going to be so bold, but I'd suggest a few more to be removed from consideration. Godfather's Pizza is "corporate" (not locally owned), and at least one person here has stated a preference to stick with locally owned places. Bahn Thai is more expensive than some of the others; we might consider striking it as well. The burger and sandwich places (Red Onion, Gators Dockside) probably have something that everyone likes at a price that everyone can afford, and would be my first choices (along with the BBQ place, which isn't an option if we have a vegetarian in the group). Any other suggestions? Horologium (talk) 13:26, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think the best options would be Red Onion or Gators Dockside, for the same reasons mentioned above. If I had to pick I'd say Dockside. There's a huge menu with something for everyone. Fliry Vorru (talk) 21:38, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- If no one objects, we'll stick with Dockside (note that I've never been there before), now.. do we want to do it on the September date or October date? - Jameson L. Tai talk ♦ contribs 21:47, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'd prefer the September date, for the simple reason that it is earlier. If we all like each other, we can meet again in October. :) Horologium (talk) 22:32, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- I second that emotion. Let's try September (weather permitting). --Ebyabe (talk) 23:04, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- No objections here. -- Donald Albury 23:54, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- I have no objections either. Personally, I'm pretty sure October will be a very busy month with stacked projects and such, so as long as weather permitting, September would be fine. - Jameson L. Tai talk ♦ contribs 04:18, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

On an unrelated note...
[edit]Stay safe and dry during Fay. It's flooded here in Melbourne/Palm Bay... - Jameson L. Tai talk ♦ contribs 21:07, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Looks like it will be late tomorrow before it gets to Gainesville. -- Donald Albury 23:38, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Invites
[edit]Do we want to invite the local press/media? We've got 9 yeses and 5 possibles for attendance, so I hope we will have at least 6 show up (we had high rates of no shows for the Miami meetups, things happen). -- Donald Albury 23:38, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Who might show? The Alligator? --Moni3 (talk) 23:48, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe the Sun will send someone if it's a slow news day. I thought there was something in the procedures section suggesting getting coverage of meetups, but I just looked and there hasn't been anything about that on the page for at least a year. So, maybe just nevermind. -- Donald Albury 01:03, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Photos
[edit]I plan to bring a digital camera (we can post pics at Wikipedia:Meetup/Gallery). Does anyone object to having their pic taken/posted? I'll not post pics of people who don't want them posted, and I'll not take pics (even for personal enjoyment) of people who object to having their pictures taken. I brought this up because it was apparently an issue at some meetups, and I'd rather have some advance notice if we have camera-shy attendees. Horologium (talk) 15:42, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- Not for privacy issues, but only because I manage to look unfathomably hideous in a picture. I suppose it's a gift. --Moni3 (talk) 16:24, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
September 13th
[edit]Do we have a go for Sep 13 or not? - Jameson L. Tai talk ♦ contribs 17:21, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- I'm still planning on it. Horologium (talk) 18:00, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- I'm there. Bring on the wings! Fliry Vorru (talk) 18:06, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

- I may be a No Go. Florida Tech just decided to put two Saturday make-up days for the two days of canceled classes from Tropical Storm Fay (2008). One of them the the 13th... :( They haven't confirmed it yet, but it does look like I won't be able to go. I hope you all have fun though. Can someone who plans on going email me please? Thanks. - Jameson L. Tai talk ♦ contribs 05:01, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like September 13th is a go, even if we have 5 or 6 people it'll be a good time. What time shall we meet up? I know it says 7, but Dockside is busier the later it gets. I was thinking 6 or so, that way we've got plenty of time to let the alcohol wear off before we go home. Fliry Vorru (talk) 18:01, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
- If we start at 6, I won't be able to be there right away. I have a mandatory lab/field trip which is scheduled to end at 5:30, and I will need to shower after wandering around Homosassa Springs and Paynes Prairie all day long. BTW, User:John Broughton has arranged for us to receive a bunch of copies of his book, Wikipedia Reader's Guide: The Missing Manual, which is a great tool for introducing spouses/boyfriends/girlfriends/children to Wikipedia and includes some basic editing techniques. If the books arrive in time for the meetup</me crosses fingers>, we'll have enough copies to go around. Oh, although he hasn't "checked in", User:HowiePoodle is going to be at the meetup as well.Horologium (talk) 18:43, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
- Fair enough, so 7 it is then? If nobody has a problem with it I'll get there early and reserve a table. Does a table for 12 sound big enough to be safe? As to figuring out who everyone is... I'll try to get a table as close to the entrance as possible and I'll make some kind of sign to put on the table. Fliry Vorru (talk) 16:47, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I think a table for 12 should be big enough. As for a sign, a simple sheet of paper with "Wikimeetup Gainesville" in a 36 point (or so) font on the table should be enough to direct people over. I'll see if I can get some "Hello, my name is _________" stickers so we can all identify each other. Horologium (talk) 18:22, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi folks, did this meetup go off alright? I want to know if I should record it at Wikipedia:Meetup/Past meetups. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 18:04, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Ping! So, did anyone go?--Pharos (talk) 19:32, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- About 4 or 5 folks. It was pretty casual. --Ebyabe (talk) 01:28, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
