No Canadians?

What the heck? This is an outrage! :) (I see that one just signed up for 2009, though, so that's good news!) Gary King (talk) 19:32, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

haha! Why don't you enter? weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 20:31, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Okay done. I don't know what I have to do though. Gary King (talk) 20:44, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, basically, you get points for edits, GAs, FAs, FLs, DYKs... the whole shabang, really. The rules will be much more thoroughly explained closer to the time. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 20:50, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Too bad it's not retroactive then :) Gary King (talk) 21:01, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Rule Suggestion

In the interest of not encouraging thoughtless edits, do you think it would make sense to deduct points for mainspace edits that get reverted? 1 point for mainspace edits, -5 for mainspace edits that get reverted. Good editors have nothing to fear. Just a friendly suggestion. best, maxsch (talk) 14:33, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

That's a good idea, but it would take a ridiculous amount of time to check if the mainspace edits were reverted... As a side note, it actually turns out as 0.1 points per edit, as it's divided by 10. We could try to exclude Huggle edits, but that's a difficult task as well. It's a good idea, but hard to put into practice. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 14:59, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I could bug SQL to fix up his edit counter to count Huggle edits per month rather than overall - can't promise anything, though. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 15:03, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I see how it could be difficult. And this is just a contest for fun, so it isn't worth doing too much extra work for it. But in general I disagree with pure edit count being used as a measure of editor achievement or editor quality. It can encourage/reward the wrong kind of behavior. But perhaps this isn't the place for such concerns. Enjoy the cup! maxsch (talk) 18:47, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Scoring

Is scoring only the edits, FAs, etc during the designated time frame or does it count all your prior edits too?RlevseTalk 16:02, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Only those promoted within the allocated two months per round.  :) weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 16:09, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I assume that means only edits during the round count, for all points. RlevseTalk 16:13, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
You are correct. iMatthew (talk) 18:55, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

ITN

Do ITN features have the same points as DYK? SpencerT♦C 19:21, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes. Yes they do. iMatthew (talk) 19:22, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for your help! SpencerT♦C 19:28, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

USA

I know that iMatthew was originally USA, but then he left and Jamesontai became the USA. Who actually has the rights to call the USA first -- who noticed it first, or who signed up first? « Diligent Terrier [talk] 20:57, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

What is the "WikiWorldCup team"? Gary King (talk) 21:30, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I assumed it was the team of individuals that did the score-keeping and other administrative stuff, but I could be wrong. Useight (talk) 21:47, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Nope, you're spot on. They are a neutral team of people who add up the scores. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 21:48, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Ah okay, thanks. Gary King (talk) 21:51, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Question

It says on the page, 25 points per Good article greatly contributed to (at least 25 edits). As I have written most of my GAs in less than 15 or 20 edits, I wouldn't qualify? Would I have to make a bunch of typos so I can increase my edit count on the article?? :P –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 00:43, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

I guess so :) Gary King (talk) 03:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Your GAs have to be promoted in the given time to qualify anyway, so those wouldn't count ;) Also, I guess that if you are the main contributor (maybe 80 to 100%) on one article even if there are only 20 edits or so total. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 21:14, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Do the contestants have to submit the articles they have worked on or the judges will check on them themselves? Gary King (talk) 21:16, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, it would be an idea, certainly. Previously we simply asked the competitors to add the scores in themselves, but it would certainly be a good idea to get the names of the articles to double-check. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 21:35, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Oh I see; where's the page for the scores? Gary King (talk) 21:42, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
User:WBOSITG/WikiCup/2009. iMatthew (talk) 21:46, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
When you say "(maybe 80 to 100%)", do you mean amount of content, or number of edits? SpencerT♦C 22:28, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Either. I mean that if you copyedit that can't really count as your own work. Garden. 22:38, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Heh

No French entrants this year?! Ha! weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 10:31, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

Wow, from the looks of it, no one has ever been France (unless I missed it)...   jj137 (talk) 23:29, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
Well I have to say I've missed this thing entirely! :) --Candlewicke (Talk) 01:45, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Why are only FAs counted?

What about other types of featured content? Maxim(talk) 23:02, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps it becomes much more complex for the scoring team? I don't know, but you'd think that GAs or FLs would work, too. Useight (talk) 23:13, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Not really, it's a matter of the competitor reporting their nomination. Maxim(talk) 23:41, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Well if it's self-reported, then that can't be the reason. Useight (talk) 23:55, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
IMHO FLs and GAs aren't as difficult (but they still are) to get as FAs, but now that I think about it, I think they should count too.   jj137 (talk) 00:30, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to talk to WBOSITG on IRC whenever he logs on. iMatthew (talk) 00:40, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I've got a bit more FLs than FAs so I'd like FLs (and FTs!) to be counted. Gary King (talk) 02:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

What about me? I'm primarily active in Featured Sounds, and I believe Durova primarily acts in Featured pictures. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 03:31, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Whoa, whoa, whoa. That should read "FC". Don't worry :) weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 18:38, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

The points for each type are pretty randomly chosen. FL has the least respect :( Gary King (talk) 18:54, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, bt to be honest FLs are around the same difficulty as GAs. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 18:55, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Any chance you could increase the points for FSs a bit? Because, frankly, we could really use more people working on them, and I'm not opposed to social engineering by competition. =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 19:02, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Only as long as FLs go up! :) I'd have more FLs than GAs if they were easier... probably. Gary King (talk) 19:04, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, an FL is only (well, I say only...) a list of facts and figures whereas a GA needs a lot of prose and more reliable sources. I would personally rate them the same difficulty, having worked on both types before. And @shoe - maybe. :) weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 19:09, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I just realized that this tournament starts sometime in 2009? That's a long time from now! I guess I don't have to think about it too much for the time being. Gary King (talk) 19:13, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
lol! Yeah, it does, so not really a big deal at this stage. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 19:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Registration is open kind of early then since a lot of people's situations will surely change by the time this begins. But, we'll see :) Gary King (talk) 19:17, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
That could prove a problem, but hopefully we have enough cover for that situation. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 19:20, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I have some Featured Userpages and Featured Monobooks, as well as a few Featured Scripts and a couple Featured Preferences. Do those count at all?   jj137 (talk) 21:47, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

<-- You do? is that even possible? O.o They don't sound countable as they are not encyclopaedic. Sorry. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 22:10, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm just kidding, I made all of those up. ;)   jj137 (talk) 22:41, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

What happens to last season's results?

Do they get moved to a subpage? --Pwnage8 (talk) 23:19, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Is that not them on the main page? Useight (talk) 00:38, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
For archived results: User:WBOSITG/WikiCup/2007. iMatthew (talk) 00:41, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Useight, yes that is them on the main page, but my question was whether they would be moved to a subpage, and IMatthew has answered it. --Pwnage8 (talk) 04:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Oops, I read your question as "What happened" instead of "What happens". My mistake. Useight (talk) 04:29, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

GA/FA

Question: If a new GA is promoted to FA in time would I be correct in assuming that points are given for both? --Candlewicke (Talk) 15:37, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes Gary King (talk) 15:53, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm not a good photographer, so taking images at WP:FI quality is out of the question. Are points still awarded for trawling though WP's image repository and successfully nominating someone else's? Same question for sounds, do they have to be sounds that we've recorded, or just sounds we've found and nominated? Matthewedwards (talk contribs  email) 16:52, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, interesting... perhaps less points would have to be given to avoid anyone doing that but I don't think that would a problem. Garden. 20:09, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
So you get points only for nominating or taking pictures, correct? How about editing an image, for which the edit becomes featured? SpencerT♦C 22:26, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
That would make sense, yes. Garden. 14:04, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Please don't reduce points fo r RFeatured sounds. If all goes well, at the start of 2009, we'll be on the main page and really need to be getting up 30 featured sounds a month, twice what we have now, as quickly as possible. =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 15:20, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Question

Just a quick question. Although it is a state, is it okay if I represent Massachusetts? Thanks in advance for any responce. RedThunder 11:31, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Well we do have some people representing other places that aren't considered a "country" I don't think it'd be a problem. Go right ahead. iMatthew (talk) 11:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Rulebook

Do you have a rulebook that would put an end to lots of questions over mere technicalities? Perhaps one ought to be written... --Candlewicke (Talk) 02:14, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

No, that is why there are so many questions being asked. Perhaps it would be wise to create an FAQ or something along those lines. Sunderland06 (talk) 02:25, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, yes it would. Gary King (talk) 05:10, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot

I don't think it's fair for a bot to compete against normal editors. Sam Blab 19:06, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Agreed Gary King (talk) 19:08, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Neither do I, however I'll discuss it with Garden when he gets on IRC. By the way, a bot has the edits, but they can't get a GA, FA, FL, etc. iMatthew 19:42, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Erm, that won't be necessary... Garden. 20:25, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Lol, I don't think Cobi was serious... Halloween Fools?   jj137 (talk) 21:37, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Vandal-fighting

IMO, you should gain could introduce points for reverting vandalism (If your using Huggle/Twinkle, you get less points for it because it's obviously easier then). Maybe 0.5 for every revert and 0.15 using Huggle/Twinkle? Yowuza Talk 2 me! 17:53, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

The only way that might work is if the competitors were willing to provide all of the diffs, because asking Garden or myself to look through all of your edits for over 40 people for reverting vandalism, is just way to much. iMatthew 17:59, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually, yeah, it would get pretty conufusing. Yowuza Talk 2 me! 16:45, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

DYKs

Am I right in thinking that only the DYK articles that the user created are counted, and not the ones they nominated? Chamal talk 16:30, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes. :D Garden. 23:25, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
OK then, thanks :-) Chamal talk 15:13, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

...should get points. //roux   23:29, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

That, interestingly, has been raised before. They probably will do. Garden. 23:31, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Yup, just wait until Garden gets on IRC, so we can discuss point value. iMatthew 23:33, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
The silly bastard left IRC :P Bed, or something. Sleep is for the weak!
...anyway, I think a FT/GT should be all of the points from raising the articles' statuses, and then some sort of bonus, 75 or 100 points or something (because getting a FT is hard as). //roux   23:42, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Heh...agreed. At the minimum, you have to go through, what, three FAC's?? :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 23:47, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually, if you already get the points for the FAs and FLs there isn't really that much gain in an FT. Garden. 23:21, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah... but its so much work getting something to FT/GT I feel you should get a bonus :P //roux   23:44, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
I feel ten points per FA in the topic (or five for every GA) is an acceptable bonus. :D Garden. 12:45, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
I feel that what you feel is acceptable. \o/ //roux   12:59, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

(sort of) continuing this...what about A-class? Like if an article passes a MILHIST A-class review, should it/would it get points? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 20:10, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Nope. ayematthew 20:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Heh heh, let's make those MilHis guys pay dearly :P But yeah, it doesn't make sense to do assessments since they vary so wildly. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:31, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Yep, don't include A-class. Gary King (talk) 21:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
(Pile-on) I agree. A-class doesn't require any sort of formal assessment, and is just as arbitrary as B-class. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Round one tables

Hey all, I just wanted to let everyone know that first round tables will come up Christmas day. Garden's given me the lovely task of sorting you all into tables, so I've been juggling people around, back and forth. By Christmas - we'll have about all of our contestants locked in, and I'll post the tables. ayematthew 21:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Nations Cup

This would be really cool. Can iMatthew or Garden set it up? Sam Blab 13:22, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
The concept is really not a good idea. Many dislike this WikiCup because it's competition, but forming teams only creates tension between other teams. That would not be good, and might even get this shut down. Sorry, but it's not possible. I never knew Simple stole the Cup idea, it proves to me how fail Simple is, no offense. ;) ayematthew 13:25, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Continents

It's become traditional in international competitions to also look at things on a continental perspective, though if that doesn't suit the entries we have for round 1 this can be an addition to the main judging structure. However if this is done can I just make the point that Rapa Nui can be treated as part of Polynesia or joined with Australasia as Oceania but this flag does not fly as part of South America ϢereSpielChequers 13:44, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

question on scoring

sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but are points attained for taking an article to GA and then FA (30+50)?, or just the final output? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:48, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

For GA and FA, (30+50). ayematthew 15:05, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Question (2)

How long is each round? J.delanoygabsadds 05:18, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Two months. :D Garden. 18:49, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Another Question

I see Gary King is representing Toronto. Countries and states are OK, but cities? Sam Blab 21:27, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

From the looks of the flags, nearly anything is acceptable, as long as it has a flag. I think the rules are bendable regarding this. Gary King (talk) 21:30, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
I just think it would get too complicated if cities were allowed, since there are so many in the world. Sam Blab 21:34, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
We want to be open to allow competitors to have fun. Believe it or not, many will be turned away if their top choice country is chosen. Allowing them any city with a flag opens millions of more options. ayematthew 21:36, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Maybe I'm not understanding this correctly. How does what flag a person chooses affect their gameplay? I thought it was just an icon to represent each person. Or does the geographic location matter? Gary King (talk) 21:45, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
No, it has absolutely no significance on performance whatsoever; it means that while someone can play as the USA, others can be New York, Delaware, California, Mississippi... Garden. 22:57, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Scoring

Are the scores set to zero at the beginning of each round or are the scores cumulative for the whole contest? ϢereSpielChequers 22:18, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Nope, they're zeroed every round, that is, two months. Garden. 22:58, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Pulling Out

Now... enough of innuendos - with regrets, I will not be able to compete in WikiCup. Please remove me as one of the players and kindly inform my original opponent who my replacement would be. Thanks and I hope you guys have a great holiday season. - Jameson L. Tai talkguestbookcontribs 03:33, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

DYKs (2)

Why have my DYKs been removed? Have the rules been changed? --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 03:00, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

You need the follow the instructions here. Gary King (talk) 03:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
What for instance is "diff of nomination" and how am I supposed to obtain the correct one? I presume it stands for difference but I know nothing else other than I've been doing the same thing as at least two other users whose DYKs are still present on their pages. My first DYK was even added by someone else in my absence so I followed suit. That's all I've been trying to find out! :O The instructions aren't very clear or is it perhaps just me? Please could I have a definitive explanation on my talk page as I'm extremely confused about all of this. --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 02:21, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
It's supposed to look like in the instructions; I changed it, and I actually made it different from what the instructions say as I think that it's far more useful to link to the article's talk page (which can perhaps even be omitted since it's just a click away). I find that the only real proof necessary is the DYK template on the article's talk page. A diff of the nomination on T:TDYK is not always useful because the DYK can still be declined at that point. Gary King (talk) 02:52, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

New WikiCup trophy

We are currently looking for a new trophy design, without the "Wiki World Cup" banner on it. Make a trophy specifically for the WikiCup, and upload it. Post it to this thread, and Garden and I will chose a trophy. Also, I'm going to talk to Garden tomorrow about a possible "5" extra points added to your first round score for the design we chose. ayematthew 23:32, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Just waiting on entrant #60. What do you guys think? I will replace the text with an image of the trophy when it is chosen. // roux   06:01, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Hmm. It looks great! However, I do think that you should keep the words "WikiCup 2009" somewhere (when you add the trophy) - it'll be easier for other people to tell what it the heck the poster is about when we add it to our user pages. :) BTW, I saw that you changed your flag to the Royal Standard of Canada...why is that not surprising? :P Anyway, cheers all! Allanon ♠The Dark Druid♠ 06:12, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, Her Majesty's personal flag wasn't quite what I wanted anyway. She's my queen twice (I have dual Canada/UK citizenship), but I am primarily Canadian. Also, anyone who wants to use this, please add {{User:Garden/WikiCup/Poster}} wherever you like. // roux   06:16, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Entrant number 60 is in - I added it for you. (Don't see it? Try purging this page.) Garden. 08:46, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Wow, that's an amazing sign....GREAT job roux! ayematthew 13:18, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
I've moved the information from the "info box" into the "About" section, and when this image is completed, it will replace the infobox. ayematthew 14:12, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Wooh! Vatican City will crush you all :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 15:56, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

If I were a real smartass I would have organised the flags by size/proportions, but mama had too much special juice last night to do that. I still might do it though. Unfortunately the Vatican City flag throws everything off! // roux   17:08, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

When people are eliminated/drop out, put {{User:Garden/WikiCup/Poster/X}} in front of their flag image. Will fade out the image. // roux   18:01, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Great work overall... and is your username link color randomized roux? :) 18:04, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Yep, the colours are here. // roux   18:16, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
That poster is awesome. How did you create it with wikisyntax though? O_o   jj137 (talk) 22:42, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks :) It's just a table, with the central bit done with colspan/rowspan. What I really wanted to do was use a mouseover to make the flags vanish and display the username/location, but mouseover doesn't seem to work in CSS onwiki, alas. // roux   22:45, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see now. And yes, I think all sorts of CSS/HTML/etc. are disabled by default :(   jj137 (talk) 22:58, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Submissions

Per User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions: "Articles or other media raised to Featured article, Featured list, Good article, Featured sound, or Featured picture must have also been nominated and passed/promoted during the individual round.", would this mean if I nommed an article for FAC before January but if it passed after January, I wouldn't get any points. Also, it just seems this rule has sprung up from nowhere, and wasn't involved in the past two contests. I don't exactly think it would be fair to take all points that someone would get if they hung onto it for a few extra days/weeks, which would basically promote tactical submissions of articles to FLC, FAC etc. Thanks. Sunderland06 (talk) 04:01, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, that would mean you worked on the article in 2008. The point of getting the points is that you worked on the article in 2009, during the round. ayematthew 12:15, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
Ok I just feel there should have been some discussion about this rule, because it was never like this in the past two tournaments, I suppose I'll just have to hang onto nomming things until January which isn't how I like to work. So be it. Sunderland06 (talk) 14:23, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Actually

Garden and I have decided to put the pools up...today. I'm going to get the page ready, and get the pools on. Here they come, ayematthew 13:51, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Done. ayematthew 14:43, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
