Similar former subdivision templates[edit]

Hello, there are two similar templates: Template:Infobox former subdivision and Template:Infobox historic subdivision. When should I use them? And for former cities? There is a template used for former subdivisions, including cities, in the wikipedia in Spanish: es:Plantilla:Ficha de antigua entidad subnacional. Zorahia (talk) 22:52, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

There's not a single mention of this on Wikipedia, yet it has over 3000 Google hits. I brought it up here too:[1] FunkMonk (talk) 13:12, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Talk:Isle de France[edit]

Is French Mauritius a "top-importance" article to your project? Talk:Isle de France says it is, which I find very strange. Also Talk:Dutch Mauritius -- (talk) 08:44, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

How is either a "former country"? FunkMonk (talk) 08:54, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
They're former colonies? I've noticed many defunct colonies have the WPFC banner on them. I suppose this situation is analogous to extant colonies that are considered as "(non-sovereign) countries"? (until recently, Hong Kong and Macau were colonies, and they're still treated as "countries" in many contexts; the Danish colony of Greenland is a "country" in the constitution of Denmark. England/Wales/Scotland/NI are "countries" but not sovereign, which would be an analogous situation) -- (talk) 12:31, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Help Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg[edit]

If someone with knowledge take a look in the infobox of Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg I suspect that something is very wrong when the article got moved but not fixed, but it's so confusing that I could not fix it myself.Moagim (talk) 04:01, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Categories for States and territories disestablished before 1000CE[edit]

I have proposed that 158 sub-categories of Category:States and territories by year of disestablishment should be upmerged. All these categories relate to disestablishment before 1000AD. I believe that they fall within the scope of this WikiProject.

The discussion is at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2013 February 13#States_and_territories_disestablished_before_1000CE, wher your comments will be welcome.

Thank you. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:40, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

I have nominated Kingdom of Makuria for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Dana boomer (talk) 15:18, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

East Francia[edit]

Could someone please take a look to East Francia article? The article has been massively modified, merge attempts occurred and the {{Infobox former country}} which I find very appropriate was removed several times. Thanks.--Codrin.B (talk) 08:13, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Manchukuo discussion[edit]

Here's a notice from Benlisquare about a topic which may interest people here:

It's currently being disputed whether Manchukuo was a puppet state or not. At the moment, I'm trying to compile a list of books and academic papers that refer to Manchukuo as a "puppet state". If anyone would like to help with expanding the list, please add a few more sources to the list at Talk:Manchukuo#NPOV "puppet state". Thanks. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 02:35, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Canaan - a former country?[edit]

I have recently been surprised to discover the use of Template:Infobox_former_country for a geographic region - specifically Canaan. From my understanding of the template and the associated wikiproject, we should only discuss geopolitical entities and not loosely defined geographic areas (Canaan was segmented by numerous small city states and periodically invaded by Egypt and other neighbors). I invite other editors to participate in this discussion of Canaan talk page.Greyshark09 (talk) 17:37, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Kingdom of Hungary (1000–1526)[edit]

Hi all. We have a user that doesn't understand the usage and purpose of the {{Infobox former country}}. He removed quite some significant content and navigation from the template at Kingdom of Hungary (1000–1526) and I was wondering if someone more experienced could review this. New Sasanian Empire Map![edit]

I should have gone here on regards to this topic in the first place. I hope this is the right place to address this. Recently I have posted a new topic on the Sasanian Empire talk page on regards to the map in the infobox. (Side note: I feel embarrassed that I didn't come here for this in the first place after I was told by other users on the reference desk as well as an administrator to go to the WikiProject pages for situations like this.)

I made a request on the Map Workshop for the cartographers to make a new map of the Sasanian Empire in this format: Further details about this topic are on the Sasanian Empire talk page. See here:

Would anyone like to contribute to the topic? You can either agree or disagree with the recommendations that have been proposed. Regards. :) Keeby101 (talk) 14:02, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Proposed restrictions on styles & titles of former royals[edit]

Proposed restrictions on styles & titles of former royals A proposal is now pending to !vote to ban use of titles, honorifics and styles historically associated with titled members of no longer reigning families or to require that wherever such titles are mentioned in a Wikipedia bio, article or template that a disclaimer must be attached informing the reader that the title/style is not legal or is a courtesy title only. There are two CfDs right now relevant to Byzantine history:
I support both, the idea is to replace the use of modern or religious place names with the contemporary name "Byzantine Empire" or a part of which. Of course it is being opposed by religious or nationalistic indignants. trespassers william (talk) 20:42, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet for Wikiproject Former Countries at Wikimania 2014[edit]

Project Leaflet WikiProject Medicine back and front v1.png

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Request for comment[edit]

I'd appreciate feedback from members of this project on proposals at Talk:Reichskommissariat of Belgium and Northern France to replace a "former country" infobox with a "government agency" one. This potentially would affect all articles concerning occupied territories, not just of WWII, so would be good to get as many opinions as possible.—Brigade Piron (talk) 21:40, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

RfC on Goryeo about the description of the status[edit]

There's a discussion of the description/style/format of the status of Goryeo. Feedback from this project is badly needed as there's no instruction about "tributary state" on the template and related pages. Please join in the discussion. Thank you. Oda Mari (talk) 08:08, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Does the disambiguator "(state)" have a special meaning to not mean "state" in general, if used in Chinese history articles? See Talk:Song (state) where we are discussing whether "state" does not mean any state, but only means non-Imperial states -- (talk) 04:48, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Interview for The Signpost[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Former countries for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Thanks, Rcsprinter123 (rap) @ 15:35, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
