Batman is the name of a fictional superhero in the DC Comics Animated Universe, based on a similar counterpart in the mainstream DC Comics Universe. Like the original comic book version, the animated Batman is the superhero identity adopted by millionaire industrialist and playboy Bruce Wayne to fight crime and protect the innocent in Gotham City. He has appeared on the shows Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited and Batman Beyond. He has also guest appeared on Superman: The Animated Series, The Zeta Project, and Static Shock.

While the animated version of the character is based on the comic book version, many significant differences in personal history and operation exist between the two, and each version have had different adventures. The animated version of Batman is also significant in that unlike the comic book version his personal future is known and documented, most comprehensively through the animated series Batman Beyond.

Origins

The series started with the episode On Leather Wings a point of Batman's life were he was still mysterious to the police, but he already established himself as a crime-fighter and have had some experience already. The history and origins of this version of Batman were later explored sporadically during most of the series involved in the DC Animated Universe.

As revealed in Nothing to Fear, Dreams in Darkness and For the Man Who Has Everything, Batman met his origin as an 8 year old when his parents were killed by Joe Chill in the Crime Alley after going to the movie theather. As in comics, Joe Chill's gun, the first time he fell on the Bat-Cave, the bats and his parents deaths were pivotal points in his life. In Appointment in the Crime Alley it was revealed that Leslie Thompkins, a close friend of Thomas Wayne, took care of Bruce as a kid with Alfred Pennyworth, the Waynes' butler.

After that, Bruce Wayne swore revange and train himself to perfection in several martial art and crime fighting disciplines. In the episode "Zatanna" it is revealed that while using the alias John Smith, Zatara trained Bruce Wayne how to be an escape artist and several other magic tricks. The episode "Night of the Ninja" introduces Yoru-Sensei who was Bruce Wayne's martial arts teacher in Japan. In the Justice League Unlimited episode "Dead Reckoning" we are intorduced to The Master who is a man who helped train Batman in Kung-Fu.

First Years

Most of this period was narrated in the first animated movie about Batman, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. When he was beginning his career as a vigilante, he had a very deep relationship with Andrea Beaumont, a beautiful young woman that managed to get Bruce's attention. He found himself having to choose between fulfilling his vows of revenge or having a normal life with the perfect woman. This story was partially based on the comics story arc Batman: Year Two. It was due to destiny that Andrea's father's involvement with the leaders of the Gotham mob, took her out of his life. Out of grief for not only his parents, but also of the loss of what could have been a normal life, he stayed on the path which brought him to becoming Batman.

The Animated Series years

During this period Batman met most of his enemies. It is implied that he met the Joker and the Penguin before On Leather Wings and after the Joker killed Andrea's father. The villains in the series that also appeared in Tim Burton's films had some common similarities, but most of the series' characters are adaptations as they've been seen in the original source material.

It also can be noted that it was during the series that Batman worked his relationship with police Commissioner James Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent. In the first episode, Batman was so unknown to the authorities, that they confused the Man-Bat creature with him. Mayor Hamilton Hill, actually allowed detective Harvey Bullock to lead a SWAT operation against Batman. Batman earned the Mayor's trust early in the series after rescuing his son from the Joker. Harvey Bullock's friendship, on the other hand, took Batman several years to earn. Actually during the events of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Bullock lead another open-fire operation against Batman.

At first only Dent's cynicism hinted that he might have had a relationship with the Batman. Eventually Gordon came up with the Bat-signal device to call Batman to ask for his aid whenever it was needed. At that point, it can be understood that Batman garnered not only approval with the police, but also need by the city. Batman lost one of his most valuable contacts when Harvey Dent had the accident that made him Two-Face. Harvey was not only Batman's ally, but he was also Bruce Wayne's best friend.

It can also be inferred that Batman took care of Dick Grayson before On Leather Wings, since Grayson seems much younger in the flashbacks of Robin's Reckoning than in his first appearance in the series. Robin didn't appear in most episodes of the series, as Alfred often said he was in College.

In Feat of Clay: Part I tried to help Matt Hagen, the actor that became the mutant known as Clayface, Batman met criminal businessman Roland Daggett, who later in Appointment in the Crime Alley forced the people around the Crime Alley zone to get out of their homes through mobsters, so that he could build a new bussiness zone. Batman stoped him but Dagget was never incriminated until he went thief and was aprehended by Batgirl, Catwoman and Robin (comics).

Through his relationship with Gordon, Batman eventually met his clever and enthusiastic daughter, Barbara. She would eventually become Batman's second protege, Batgirl.

One time, (Dreams in Darknes), the Scarecrow made Batman question his own sanity. The insane criminal started and operation to pollute the water in Gotham with fear inducing toxins, in the caves right under Arkham Asylum, the place where all the insane enemies of Batman are kept in custody. Professor Johnathan Crane figured out a way to coordinate the operation while pretending he was still locked. When and already intoxicated Batman crashed the Batmobile near the asylum, Dr. Bartholomew, the director, decided to lock Batman up, thinking he was actually asking for psychiatric help because he was insane. Batman knows he doest vigilantism for the right cause, being treated as an insane person while on fear toxins really made him wonder about the sanity behind his own behavior. After the doctor found out the Scarecrow was gone, Batman escaped him and finally defeated the insane Scarecrow.

In another episode Perchance to Dream, Mad Hatter got Batman uncontious and put a device on his head that alouded him to conveive and dream about a perfect world while in a perpetual coma status. In the dream, his parents were alive, he wasn't Batman and he was already engaged with Selina Kyle (Catwoman], but he couldn't get the Batman figure out of the dream. Through all his life, Batman wished a normal life for himself several ocations, but he respected his vows until his last days. He never settle down.

By the 65th episode of the series, Batman had already met most of his enemies, including the Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, the Riddler the Ventriloquist and international terrorist Ra's Al Ghul, who after proving Batman's talents, once ofered him the hand of his beautiful daughter, Talia and to inherit his vast empire(The Demon's Quest) to continue his legacy and create the perfect world. Batman refused the power proposal and, after learning how was the 600 years old the eco-terrorist planning to achieve his goal, he stoped him from destroying the main human populations.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin

Later Robin became more active and Batman gained more strong connections with Gotham City's Police force, as well as the approval of Harvey Dent's successor as District Attorney, Janet Van Dorn. That happened in the The Trial after she and Batman were kidnaped from the Arkham inmates to organize a trial where she was put in the position of defending Batman. He also finally gained Detective Harvey Bullock's trust after he received death threat and asked for his help. At the end, Batman figured out it was his landlord who wrote the letters.

Another powerful enemy he met during this period was Bane who was contacted by mob boss Rupert Thorne. He had an agenda of his own with the syndicateds assistant, Candice. They planned to defeat once and for all Batman and take the power of Gotham city underworld from their boss. Bane proved to be physically superior to Batman and also set a succesful trap in which Batman fell, and when he was about to brake his spine just as his comic counterpart did, batman broked the tube that feed Banes's body with Venom, causing him a stroke. In the animated version Batman never proved to be superior to Bane, although Bane never defeated Batman and he ended up spending his final days in a near vegetative status due to the efects of the venom drugs.

The Lost Years

There is a period of at least two years in between the end of Batman: The Animated Series, and The New Adventures of Batman. Events of these lost years were explored in the new series, including Dick Grayson abandoning the mantle of Robin after Batgirl become a more trusted partner when Batman revealed her their secret identities without consulting Dick. It was also around this time the Joker lost most of his fortune. Then Grayson travel through the world to train. He met Boston Brand, the Deadman, and learned how to glide with a special costume from another superhero. And finally, he became Nightwing.

The New Adventures

This period started when Batman met Tim Drake, a kid whose father, a small-time crook, got killed by Two-face. After the orphan showed some talent helping Batman defeat the villain, Batman decided to take care of him. After some training the kid became the new Robin.

During this period most of his enemies returned with more powers and skills. The Penguin became already a mogul of Gotham city black market and weapon trading, but the worst part is that he started being so clever that Batman was never able to prove his involvement in such operations.

In Metropolis, Superman, a new superhero with meta-human omni-powerful skills, followed Batman's example, but with a different open aproach to people and became his city's proud justice defender, Superman. While stoping a Joker big scheme to get Metropolis control, Batman met Superman. At first it was an antagonic relationship, Batman beat Superman thanks to some kryptonite he had, Superman discovered Batman's identity but he put a tracker divise on his cape and find out he was Clark Kent. They both became friends after defeating the Joker. While this happened Bruce had a romance with Clarks love interest, Lois Lane.

Poison Ivy became so skilled at creating plant humanoids that one of her creatures got Bruces attention, making him gave up his vows for a second time in his life. Before discovering Poison Ivy's plan and defeating her, he actually gave the bat-cave and his mission to Nightwing, Batgirl and Robin.

Time later Batman and Wayne disappeared, so Superman came to Robin's aid by wearing Batman's costime and fighting his foes. Thanks to the Mad-Hatter's aid discovered it was computer alien Brainiac who kidnaped Bruce in a Waynetech plant and took his mind to direct the production of a Kryptonian ship. Some time after they defeated Brainiac, Batman paid back the favor when 600 years old terrorist, Ra's Al Ghul, took Superman's powers in another atempt to ensure his survival through years and Batman saved the day.

The Justice League

On Secret Origins, due to a White-martian invation on Earth, Batman and Superman once again decided to join forces. During the adventure they got help from the last green Martian, Martian Manhunter alive after rescuing him. Later, known superheros, the Flash and Green Lantern and mysterious Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman, joined forces to expell the evil aliens. The seven decided to form a team against all future thread and became the Justice League.

Batman put a huge amout of Wayne Enterprises money to built an orbiting satellite they all used as their official base, but he stated that he is only a part time member and always kept that status. He was never a team player just as Superman, he felt he didn't need the League. However, when it came to field strategy planning Batman was always the leader and he was always needed. He was the member with the answer to every problem. As he demonstrated times like when he saved Aquaman's life by putting his body in a salt water tank ([[The Enemy Below(JLU episode)|]], when he disabled Grodd's bomb([[The Brave and the Bold(JLU episode)|]], buyed Ultra-Umanite and made him betray the Injustice Gang (Injustice for All or created a time traveling devise to stop Vandal Savage.

Sparks of love interest Between Batman and Wonder Woman started growing since he disabled Grodd's bomb. In a party in the Royal Palace of Kasnia, Bruce Wayne court her as Princess Diana of Paradice Island and they danced. During the Thanagarian ocuapation of earth in Starcrossed, the League had to keep a low profile in order to pass under their radar, Batman decided to give away his idantity and reveal Flash and Superman's as well in order to keep in comunication. They learned Hawkgirl was actually an undercover agent send to gather strategical information. During a close encounter with thanagarian troops Batman and Wonder Woman shared a kiss to hide.

During this battle ,the League had to sacrifice the Watch Tower to destroy the Thanagarian base. In the end Hawkgirl decided to betray her own people to save the earth. All these events led to major changes fot the League.

Batman Adventures

While on the Justice League Batman had to face new situations with his old foes back in Gotham City. By the time Warner released a streight to DVD animated movie titled The mystery of the Batwoman, the Penguin had became the mayor boss of the organized crime forming an alliance with syndicated Rupert Thorne and Ducaine. Three girls, with issues with each boss, fought and sabbotaged them under the single identity of Batwoman. They turned to Bane for help, but Batman, Robin and the Batwomen defeated the mafiosi trio. Around that time Bruce already had started some romantic sparkles with Barbara Gordon.

Later DC published a Batman Adventures, an 18-issue long comic title. The comic covered the adventures Batman had around that time in Gotham. During the story arc, a new criminal organization known as the False Face Society, lead by Black Mask and a mysterious figure known as Red Hood. One of the main issues he had to deal with was the Penguin gaining an enormous amount of power by becoming the elected Mayor of Gotham City. To trick into renuncing, Batman got aid from another longtime foe, the Riddler who apparently was truly trying to reform (for the second time), who got shot after discovering the Penguin got aid from the Clock King to gain the elections by cheating.

Justice League Unlimited

After the Thanagarian attempt to occupy earth, Hawkgirl quit the team, but the rest decided to expand the team to 50 members, including most members of the Justice Society, metahumans they met in the past, like the Steel, Supergirl, Zatanna, Dr. Fate, The Creeper, Etrigan and Metamorpho along with new faces like the Atom, Black Canary, Red Tornado and the Question. The six original members, along with Aquaman, king of Atlantis, shared a higher rank taking decisions on the directive board. Green Arrow, a liberal vigilante with no superpowers, was specially choosen by Batman and the League to keep the league real. His speech abilities often served as a link between the core members and the new ones and also between the League and the public eye.

After some hints of the romance between Batman and Wonder Woman, the last time their realationship was explored was when the witch Circe turned her into a pig, right after they were talking about the nature of their frienship. Batman recluted Zatanna, his old girldfriend, to help Diana and during the process they explored the same topic a little deeper. Circe agreed to turn Wonder Woman back into a human if Batman share something he was hiding for a long time: singing talent.

This new League was based on an even bigger Watch Yower satellite, equiated with a powerful nuclear laser ready to shoot any new threat like the Thannagarian invasion was. After watching it work against an alien creature called the Darkheart, the general Eeling manifestated the lack of trust goverment has for a superhero militia with such powerful weapon. Later it became clear what some heros had already figured out: after the first time Superman went rogue (at the end of Superman: The Animated Series), goverment started a secret organization responsible for several threat the heros faced in the past. A retired general Hardcastle revealed to some members of the league that enemies like Volcana or even Doomsday were all product of this organization.

The name of the organization was Cadmus Project, and it was lead by Amanda Waller and General Wade Eiling, and other five, including Professor Hamilton, who was never able to trust Superman again after he used force on him the time he went rogue; and Dr. Hugo Strange, whose presence implied they had a department with an expert psychiatrist figuring out the League member's secret identities, since when Batman had a previous confrontation with Waller, he learned the agency knew his identity.

When Profesor Milo, another head of a Cadmus department and also an old foe of Batman and Catwoman, failed decifrating the Langstrom formula for genetic splicing, Waller fired him. In revange he freed again Doomsday. Superman stoped him but Batman took a bullet from him when

Batman would later reveal that Lex Luthor the one financing the project and not the goverment. Luthor later hacked the Watch Tower to shoot an abandoned Cadmus base, seting things for a final confrontation. The other six of the original seven turned themselves to custody, but Batman instead, went to beat Eeling and reveal to Waller and Hamilton how Luthor was responsible for the incident by hacking the Watch Tower and he was ready to put his brain in an new Amazo body. Thanks to that, Amanda and Hamilton not only stoped the attack they had sent to the Watch Tower (although the leader of the operation, Galatea, disobeyed the orther anyway), but they freed the other six core members and aided the League to defeat Luthor, who during the fight merged his body and mind with Brainiac (who was actually the real one behind the confilct) and the Darkheart creature.

After that, the League agreed to dismantle the laser and built a base in Metropolis. Waller eventually became the goverment agent responsible to deal with superhuman affairs and the League started an open relationship with the goverment.

In another adventure the new Secret Society killed all the monks that were helping Deadman find his way to redemption. They were known friends of Batman, so Deadman took Supeman's body to ask his help. The Society's leader, Grodd, wanted a mystical object for his personal objetives, and the League decided to go with Deadman to stop them. After the League stoped their plan, Devil Ray, the cold blooded mercenary asassin responsible for most of the monks masacre, decided to shoot Wonder Woman. Deadman notice that quickly, took Batman's body and killed the villain with a gun. Batman didn't stoped feeling guilty for that murder.

In the final episode, the Justice League and the Secret Society fought the Apokolips troops while Batman, Superman and Luthor went after a resurrected Darksaid. During the battle, the dark lord used his Omega beams to try to destroy Batman, who succesfully escaped them achieving something no other human has. Whit the aid of Metron, Luthor saved the situation by offering Darkseid something he always wanted, the [[Anti-life Equation]. They both disappeared as Darkseid touched it. After that Batman demostrated to have "started getting softer" by granting the reamining members of the Secret Society (a Grodd's faction were apparently killed back in space) a 5 minutes advantage before sending the entire Justice League after them.

After JLU

After Batman was last seen in Justice League Unlimited, at some point he had a traumatic final confrontation with the Joker. Nightwing left the city to find his own way and Robin Tim Drake disappeared. After several days trying to find him, Batman and Batgirl found the Joker and his assistant Harley Quinn to be the responsible parties. The insane criminal had tortured and brainwashed Batman's youngest sidekick, discovering Batman's true identity in the process. The Joker had shaped the boy wonder into a mindless sidekick for himself. Robin managed to break through his mental reprogramming long enough to fatally shoot the Joker. At the end of the conflict, with the Joker dead and Harley Quinn missing and presumed dead as well, Robin was traumatized for life. Leslie Tomkins facilitated his recovery, but he never forgot and never reconciled with Bruce.

It is also know it was around this point that Batman and the League were contacted by Waller to stop an encarnation of the Royal Flush Gang lead by a dying Ace. The way Batman talked Ace into stoping the madness and hold her while dying left quite an impression on Amanda Waller.

Eventually Batman became an item with Batgirl, but the situation never satisfied Barbara Gordon. She left her superhero career and became a cop, and following her father's footsteps, eventually becoming Gotham City's Police Commissioner.

Meanwhile Batman started getting slow and, according to Amanda Waller, it was becoming obvious. After all the antagonistic and later friendly realtionships with Batman and the Justice League, she came to the conclusion that the world would always need a Batman. Waller used her old Cadmus contacts to launch "Project: Batman Beyond". She found a young couple that was almost an identical psychological profile match for Mr. & Mrs. Wayne, Warren and Mary McGinnis. When Warren went in for what he thought was a flu shot, Task Force X agent, the Clock King secretly changed the shot for a formula that overwrote McGinnis reproductive DNA with Bruce Wayne's. A year later, Terry McGinnis was born, genetically the son of Mrs. McGinnis and Bruce Wayne.

Genetics, however, do not alone make a Batman, so Waller hired Andrea Beaumont, known as the Phantasm, as an assassin to kill Terry's parents as the three of them were leaving a movie theatre, hoping that the same tragedy would cause the same response. Andrea couldn't go through with it though, and she convinced Waller a new Batman shouldn't be created by the very same thing he fought all his life, and the project was effectively scrapped.

Terry grew up, while Batman was getting worse. Even after creating a new suit that provided him the ability to fly, strenght, digital comunication and invisibility, Batman reached a point when it was physically impossible to keep fighting crime. When Batman went to rescue the daughter of Veronica Vreeland, his close socialite friend, he got a cardiac attack while fighting, forcing him to resort to threatening a thug with a gun to solve the situation, breaking a lifelong rule. It was then that Bruce realized he was no longer able to carry on as Batman.

Before that point, his focus on crime-fighting was so strong that, he stopped paying attention to Wayne Enterprises. The sinister figure of Derek Powers had established himself as the new CEO and renamed the company Wayne/Power Enterprises, while Lucius Fox quit to begin his own company. Bruce lost most of his control and contacts in his own company.

Batman Beyond

File:Batman McGinnis.jpg

Warren McGinnis happened to be one of Wayne/Powers Enterprices employees. At the begining of Batman Beyond, he acquired some incriminating evidence about his company. Knowing that he was a honest person, Derek Powers sent his assistant Mr. Fixx, to get rid of him.

By then Terry was a rebelious teenager who didn't get along with the elder McGinnis, now divorced from his wife. After an argument with his father, Terry stormed out of the house, only to return and find that Mr. Fixx had killed Warren, though he made it look like an act of senseless brutality by the Jokerz, a local gang that committed small crimes inspired by the now legendary Joker. An angry and grief-stricken Terry got in a fight with the Jokerz that ended right in front of Wayne manor. A very old Bruce Wayne witnessed the confrontation and, still very skilled, helped Terry defeat the punks, but needed help into his mansion afterwards. The exhausted Bruce fell asleep and Terry started wandering the manor and he discovered the Bat-cave by accident. After finding Terry in the Batcave, an angry Bruce threw him out of the mansion, but Terry later snuck back in to steal the Batsuit, which he used to track down his father's killer. After what had happened to Tim Drake years ago, Bruce was at first unwilling to take on another kid sidekick, but later reconsidered and began training Terry as the next Batman.

After this Bruce's life was reinvigorated with the mission of traing a new batman to keep his legacy, as well as the task of keeping Powers under control, who actually started worring about Bruce getting in his way and tried to get rid of him. Powers had a secret he managed to keep for some time. After his first confrontation with Batman II, he got contaminated with radioctive material that turned him into an energy mutant. When this got to the public knoledge he became a wanted criminal and later died, his son became Wayne/Powers C. E. O.

Time later,an un-aged Talia, daughter of Batman's long time enemy Ra's Al Ghul, showed up ofering Bruce the longevity benefits of the Lazarus Pit and he acept it, gaining his youth again. But the situation turned into tragedy when Bruce and Terry discovered Talia was actually Ra's Al Ghul, who finally unable to benefit enough from the pits, took his own daughter's body to tranfer his mind and gain her youth, and his next step was rejuvenate Bruce to repeat the operation with his body. Ghul was defeated and the Lazarus efect eventually wore of Bruce. It probably gave him more longevity, though.

The Return of the Joker

After mediocre managment from Paxton Powers, Bruce Wayne once again gained full C. E. O. control over Wayne Enterprices and renamed it. It was arount this time that a new branch of Jokerz, included the twin granddaughters of Harley Quinn, who turned out to be alive and retired, started operating under the direction of somebody that claimed to be the original Joker. Barbara Gordon revealed to Terry the brainwash incident with Tim Drake and the Joker. After some investigations Bruce and Terry learned that the Joker was Tim, Robin II, but only physicaly. The Joker not only brainwashed Drake, but he also used the same special technology they would later learn Waller used to clone Bruce, to put his mind into the sidekick's brain, achiving the ultimate joke on Batman. It was the Joker living in Tim's body. This Joker also had full knoledge of Batman's identity and Robin II's combat knoledge. After Batman II spoped him, he though he could confortabli leave the scene and "see Batman II around", but Terry kept fighting him until he freed Drake once again and defeated the the Joker.

The Call

After Micron was incapacitated the Superman traveled to Gotham to recruit the new Batman into the Justice League, and Terry accepted.

After some incidents also incapacitated Aqua-girl and almost took Warhawk's life, it was established by the team that there was a traitor within the League. Bruce helped the team to discover the traitor who turned out to be none other than Superman himself under the power of Starro, one of creatures Superman rescued from the Preservator during Superman: The Animated Series. The preservator was an alien who colected the last reamaing specimens of every creature in the universe that was about to get extinguished. He wanted to have Superman as the last son of Krypton and Lobo among his creatures, but they defeat him and Clark took care of the zoo integrating it to his Fortress of Solitude, where starro managed to grew and reproduce. Some time before Terry was recruted, a Starro got on Superman's chest taking control over his mind. Later, after the League faced superman, several starros got all the league members but Batman II, who had to defeat them. Then Superman took the creatures back to their ofiginal planet.

The Once and Future Thing

In a Justice League two-part episode, The Once and the Future Thing, villainous time traveller Chronos took control of Joker/Drake's band and gave them cybernetic powers, which allowed them to eliminate much of the League, including Big Barda and Superman, leaving Bruce Wayne in charge. With the aid of Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Batman from the Justice League Unlimited era, the League managed to stop Chronos even before he started his operation, and put the future back on its proper course. Only John Stewart Green Lantern and Batman kept memory of the adventure.

Epilogue

Years later, when Bruce was so old that he depended on Terry's care, Terry found out he shared Bruce Wayne's DNA. At first believing that Bruce had known he was his biological father all along and had somehow conspired to mold Terry in his image, an angry Terry somehow uncovered Amanda Waller's part in his creation. The aged Waller confessed her role in collecting genetic material from an unwitting Bruce Wayne and orchestrating Terry's birth. Although her plans to create an heir to Batman's legacy had been abandoned, in an extreme twist of fate, Terry had ended up choosing that path on his own. After getting the whole story, Terry decided to remain with the mantle of the bat, but still hang on to the other things in life he wanted as well, proposing marriage to his longtime girlfriend Dana, starting a family thus continuing the Legacy of Batman and Bruce Wayne long after Bruce Wayne's Death. However, specualtion hasd run rampant on the deatils of Bruce's Death and his acknowledgemnt of his relation to Terry.
