Yury Aleksandrovich Dud (Russian: Ю́рий Алекса́ндрович Дудь; born 11 October 1986) is a Russian independent journalist and YouTuber. He was editor-in-chief of Sports.ru from 2011 to 2018 and since 2018 has been Deputy Director-General. In 2017, he launched his YouTube channel vDud [ru; ka] (Russian: вДудь) where he interviews famous figures from Russia and other post-Soviet states. As of 2022, he has over 10 million YouTube subscribers.

Biography

Family

Dud considers himself to be of Ukrainian origin and Russian by identity. He was born in East Germany and has lived in Russia since the age of 4.[2]

Dud is married to Olga Dud (née Boneva) and has two children.[3][4]

Career

Since 2001, Dud worked in Russian newspaper Izvestia as a freelance journalist, and became a staff journalist at the age of 16.[2] In 2008 Yuri Dud graduated from the MSU Faculty of Journalism.[2]

In 2007, he worked in sports magazine "PROsport", then in the sports division of NTV Plus.[2]

In 2011–2013, Dud hosted a TV show "Headbutt" at Russia-2. In 2015–2017, he started another show called "KultTura" for TV channel Match TV.[2] The show was taken off the air due to poor ratings and lack of sponsors.[5]

From 2011 to 2018, Dud was an editor-in-chief of Sports.ru.[2] In 2018, he moved to the position of Deputy Director-General.[6]

In February 2017, Dud launched a YouTube channel named vDud, where he interviews Russian musicians (mainly rappers), politicians, journalists, film directors, and business people.[7] The channel quickly became a success, for instance, an interview with popular influencer Nastya Ivleeva got more than 30 mln views.[8] As of June 2020, vDud got more than billiard views.[9] By 2021 Dud became the most popular Russian blogger.[10] According to prominent Russian editor and journalist Yury Saprykin [ru], Dud became a voice of the new generation in his country. In his interviews he openly speaks with the guests on topics that are unimaginable for state media. Saprykin thinks that Dud with his work reinvents recent Russian history showing it as it is, clear of state propaganda. By November 2021, the channel had more than 9.56 mln subscribers. Forbes estimated Dud's income in 2021 at $1.8 mln dollars.[11]

Documentaries

With time, 'vDud' channel grew from interviews with a single person to making documentary movies on social issues and recent history of Russia.[11]

Kolyma - The Home Of Our Fear

In April 2019 Dud published a documentary 'Kolyma - The Home Of Our Fear' about Stalinist repressions, Gulag labor camps and heavy legacy of that time.[12][13][14]

Beslan. Remember

On September 2, 2019, Dud published his new film 'Beslan. Remember' dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Beslan school siege of 2004.[15] In the opening of the documentary Dud explained that ‘Our state made mistakes that led to this tragedy. By giving maximum care to the victims it can earn forgiveness and, later, trust of its people’. The film is based on interviews of the witnesses, hostages, journalists, and bureaucrats who were there during the tragedy, including Ruslan Aushev, the sole negotiator who entered the sieged school and led 26 hostages outside.[16] The film got more than 10 mln views in 4 days. Its release marked the 15th anniversary of the Beslan tragedy, notably, no documentaries or reports were given that day on state channels.[17]

Criticism from state-controlled media followed the release, Vladimir Solovyov, being one of the most vocal.[18] Argumenty i Fakty newspaper accused Dud of whitewashing the terrorists.[19] Dmitry Sokolov-Mitrich [ru], who witnessed the events, criticized Dud for biased description of the storming by Russian forces.[20][21] Meanwhile, independent editions like ‘Novaya Gazeta’ praised the documentary for professional, calm intonation and thorough, detailed analysis.[22]

HIV in Russia - the Epidemics No One Talks About

Dud's next film 'HIV in Russia: the Epidemics No One Talks About' was released on February 11, 2020 and got more than 13 mln views in a week.[23] Initially the team wanted to tell its audience how not to get into sad statistics and join more than 1 mln people with HIV in Russia. But in the process of working on the movie they understood the great problem of constant condemnation and discrimination against the HIV sufferers.[24] After the release, a politician and activist Fedot Tumusov organized a screening in the State Duma in order to stimulate the deputies work on this problem.[25] The Head of the Auditing Chamber Alexei Kudrin ordered his department to carefully examine medical support measures provided to HIV sufferers in the country.[26] According to Google Analytics, searches for HIV tests grew 56 times after the movie release. Head of the Federal Centre for AIDS Prevention and Control vadim Pokrovsky told the media that the number of people willing to perform HIV testing doubled.[27]

World IT Capital

The documentary was released on April 23, 2020, and dedicated to entrepreneurs of the Silicon Valley in California.[28]

Tortures in Russia

On December 7, 2021, a 140 min documentary on tortures in modern Russia was released.[29] In this documentary Dud interviews the victims, human rights activists and organizations.[30][31] The film opens up on massive violence and physical tortures in Russian penitential facilities, that stay undisclosed and uninvestigated, often the victims are unable to sue their offenders. Even the cases that are opened and brought to courts are mostly acquittal.[32]

Crackdown

On June 17, 2021, the authorities started prosecution of Dud for alleged drug propaganda that was seen in his interviews with a Ukrainian blogger and a Russian rapper.[33] He was found guilty and sentenced to a 100,000 roubles fine.[34] Dud tried to appeal, but without success.[35]

On September 10, 2021, Dud was awarded the GQ Man of the Year prize. At the ceremony he gave a speech, urging his colleagues to break the silence ‘when police hit innocent citizens on streets with their batons, when someone steals a truckful of state money, when another polling would be rigged’. On the next day, an official Kremlin spokesman told the media that they ‘recommend not to project his words onto all society’.[36][37][38]

In February 2022, after the inception of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dud condemned the invasion and publicly called on to withdraw the Russian troops from Ukraine; his anti-war Facebook post collected over 1 million likes.[39][40] Dud described the Russian invasion as an 'imperial frenzy' that he doesn't want to be a part of.[41]

Following the course of massive media crackdown in Belarus, the Main Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime and Corruption (MDCOCC) of the Interior Ministry of Belarus has labeled three videos on his channel as extremist. The videos were about stand-up comic Slava Komissarenko, who fled Belarus and openly opposes Belarusian regime, NEXTA channel and ordinary Belarusians, who had to leave their motherland after 2020–2021 Belarusian protests. The MDCOCC decision is condemned by the CPJ as freedom of speech violation.[42]

By March 2022, Dud telegram account grew to 1.3 mln followers.[43] Сomplaints on his anti-war posts was filed to the General Prosecutor's Office and Ministry of Justice, calling for branding Dud a foreign agent.[44] According to recent Russian law, public anti-war protest can be punished with 15 years in prison.[45]
