Basic Facts[edit]

The Pachrukhiya case was an extremely infamous political incidence of Eastern Uttar Pradesh that took place in the closing year of the 20th Century.

This was an incident where the current Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was charged with the killing of a police head constable.[1]

The incidence took place on 10 February 1999 in Pachrukhiya, a village in Maharajganj district. There was a dispute between two religious communities in the village, as regards Peepal trees in the Kabristan (Muslim graveyard). This dispute resulted in political polarization, with then Samajwadi Party leader Talat Aziz from Gorakhpur on one side and Adityanath on other.

On 10 February 1999, Adityanath went to this village when a protest assembly led by Talat Aziz was going on. A skirmish took place, which left a Police Head Constable, Satya Prakash Yadav and another person dead. Satya Prakash Yadav was the security personnel assigned to Talat Aziz.

Both the sides made allegations about the responsibility of the incidence. At least three First Information Reports (FIR) were registered in Kotwali Maharajganj police station about it. One of these was registered by Talat Aziz, which named Adityanath and others as the accused for killing of Head Constable Satya Prakash Yadav. Another FIR about rioting was registered by the then Police Inspector of Kotwali Maharajganj, B K Srivastava. A third FIR was registered by Adityanath, against Talat Aziz and others, alleging them of attacking Adityanath and his people.

Subsequent Developments[edit]

These cases were transferred to Crime Branch- Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID) of Uttar Pradesh Police, which presented a Final Report.[2] [3]

The case remained pending for twenty years and it was only in July 2019 that the Court accepted the Final Report presented in the case.[4] [5] [6] [7]

Allegation of harassment to the complainant[edit]

Talat Aziz, the complainant of the murder case against Adityanath alleged all through that she was being tortured and tormented by Adityanath's men to take back the case. She went on record making apprehensions about threat to her life and to her family members because of this case.[8] [9]

Impact[edit]

This case proved to be a turning point in the life of Adityanath, as also in the history of Uttar Pradesh Politics. As stated by Times of India- "His Hindu hardliner image was strengthened after the ‘‘Pachrukhiya’ incident in Maharjganj district."[10] Similarly, as Aaj Tak article names it among the most important events in the life of Adityanath, a fact stated in many other articles till date like Jansatta, ABP News and others.
