Jimei University (JMU Chinese: 集美大学; pinyin: Jíměi Dàxué; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chip-bi Tua-hak), colloquially known as "JíDà" (集大), is a public university located in Xiamen, Fujian, People's Republic of China.

History

Founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee) in 1918, Jimei University enjoys a long history of over 90 years.Its origin can be traced back to Jimei Normal School.In 1994,Jimei University was the result of combining five institutes and colleges in the Jimei Schools Village. The five institutes and colleges were: Fujian Physical Education College, Jimei Finance and Economics Institute, Jimei Navigation Institute, Jimei Teachers College, and Xiamen Fisheries College.[1]

Academic

Jimei University,With the strong educational strength and perfect conditions,has an integration of 20 colleges and offers 56 postgraduate programs, 2 course master’s programs in 10 fields and 63 undergraduate programs in eight disciplines: Engineering, Agronomy, Economics, Pedagogy, Science, Literature,Administration,and Law.

Presently, Jimei University has a total enrolment of more than 26,000 full-time students and over 1500 full-time teachers, among whom, over 180 professors and 550 associate professors. as well as has 4 characterized major construction projects at the national level, one state-level teaching team, one state-level modal center for experimental teaching, 11 characterized major construction projects at the provincial level, 37 provincial quality courses, 7 provincial teaching teams, 4 provincial or ministerial key laboratories and research centers，and 11 provincial key disciplines.

Jimei University have made a five-year plan that it will continue to give priority to undergraduate education and develop postgraduate education positively. It aims to cultivate creative and applied talents catering to the needs of the local development, of the nation and of the different industries, and to preliminarily build itself into one famous multi-disciplined university with distinguishing features, high level and strong competitiveness in China.

The University has an area of more than 2300 mu (1mu=666.7m2), with a floor space of over 1,020,000 square meters.

Prize

In 2009 the constructions of the new campus was elected one of the “100 Major and Classical Construction Projects” over the 60 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Jimei University is the only university winning the award.
