Slaves and Masters is the thirteenth studio album by Deep Purple, and was released in 1990. This is the band's only album to feature singer Joe Lynn Turner, who joined the previous year (and was once the lead singer of Ritchie Blackmore's solo band Rainbow).
Before hiring Turner, the band had considered singer Jimi Jamison of Survivor, but other obligations made him unavailable.[2] Hard rock-based core Purple fans thought the vocal parts ended up being a bit too melodic. However, Turner was still a member of the group when they began recording their next album in 1992.
The album peaked at #87 on the Billboard Charts, and a relatively successful 1991 tour followed in particularly Europe.

[edit] Unreleased & live
In addition to the tracks on Slaves and Masters, there were two other Mk V songs released in 1990-91. One was "Slow Down Sister", B-side of the "Love Conquers All" 12" and CD singles. The other was "Fire, Ice and Dynamite", an outtake adapted for the Fire, Ice and Dynamite action movie, in preference to a Harold Faltermeyer song which it was suggested they perform. The track was released on the CD of the movie soundtrack. Jon Lord does not appear on it, and the synthesizers were played by Roger Glover. "Slow Down Sister" has since been reissued on the Shades 1968–1998 box set. "Fire, Ice and Dynamite" was re-released on the New, Live & Rare DVD as a bonus feature.
None of the songs from Slaves and Masters have been performed live since the 1991 World Tour, except for "King of Dreams" and "Love Conquers All", which are performed occasionally by Joe Lynn Turner at his solo shows. "King of Dreams" was also part of the setlist of the Hughes Turner Project European and Japanese tours in 2002. This version can be heard on HTP's Live In Tokyo album.
