Appearances[edit]

Popstars: The Rivals[edit]

In 2002, McMichael auditioned for talent show Popstars: The Rivals, to win a place in Girls Aloud. She impressed judges Pete Waterman, Geri Halliwell and Louis Walsh, but was later disqualified after it was discovered that she was only 13 years old; the rules stated that all contestants had to be aged between 16-24.[1] After her disqualification, Halliwell and presenter Davina McCall comforted her.

Big Brother[edit]

In 2008, McMichael took part in the ninth series of Big Brother, which was also hosted by McCall. It is unknown if McCall remembered meeting McMichael from Popstars: The Rivals. On Day 1, along with fellow housemates Mario Marconi, his girlfriend Lisa Appleton, and Luke Marsden, Steph was given a secret mission to hide the relationship between housemates Mario and Lisa; as part of this task she was required to pretend to be Marconi's girlfriend.[2] Failure to complete this mission successfully would result in an automatic nomination of not only her, but also Mario, Lisa, and Luke.[2] In her role, she was required to marry him, thinking that it was a genuine wedding; unbeknownst to her, the marriage was not actually real.[3] They did not get on well, which resulted in several arguments between the two of them, one of which resulted in him calling her a haemorrhoid. They failed their secret mission and all four faced the public vote in week 1.[4] She was evicted on Day 9 with 42% of the public vote.[5]

The X Factor[edit]

In 2012, Steph and her best friend Sophie "Twinnie" Houghton auditioned for the ninth series of The X Factor as duo Poisonous Twin, singing Lady Gaga's "Telephone". In addition to regular judge Walsh, Halliwell was a guest judge that day, but it is unknown either of them remembered McMichael from her Popstars: The Rivals audition ten years previously.[6] Halliwell, Walsh and Gary Barlow sent Poisonous Twin through to bootcamp; Tulisa Contostavlos was the only judge to refuse them. Poisonous Twin progressed through to Walsh's judges' houses category in Las Vegas, but he decided not to take them to the live shows (instead choosing MK1, GMD3 and Union J) and they were therefore eliminated.
