Untitled[edit]

Just started this wikipedia article about Anne van den Ban. It is my first article so advise about improvements for the article are welcome.

Most of the text was adapted from existing websites from Wageningen University and Research Centre and the picture was made available by the department of communication science. In the coming weeks this article will be reviewed by people who have worked and continue to work with Anne van den Ban. HJPB

You should rewrite it in your own words, using the existing websites as a source of information, not as a source of sentences. Also, all praiseful wording is to be avoided. If a statement cannot be made without it sounding like praise from a colleague, then the information is to be left out, period. -- Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 18:56, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As reviewing administrator, I thought it fixable, and not completely a copyvio, so I didn't delete it. But I agree totally with Blanchardb that it must be fixed, and quickly. What he says is completely correct--I removed a paragraph of the sort of praise he had in mind. And additionally, please bear in mind two key things about Wikipedia
  1. nobody owns a Wikipedia article Those who knew the person are not any more entitled to determine the text of the article than anyone else.
  2. All Wikipedia articles are based on published sources. personal knowledge is not a usable source for anything. The official bio on a university page is a usable source. A published article about him is a usable source.

AS good place to start learning Wikipedia style is our help page about writing Wikipedia articles .

For articles of this sort, here's a guide to what should be included:

First, give the basic information--the source should be the CV-- birthplace and date, degrees, previous positions. If there are published books, list them in formal bibliographic style. List the 3 or 4 most influential articles similarly, getting citation figures from Web of Science. Include major national level offices and awards, but not minor ones. Be sure to list editorships (but not mere editorial board membership) --we consider it very important, and you should add it to the articles for the relevant journals also, with a link to the bio.

If the person has any notable students who would qualify for Wikipedia bios, include them. Their PhD & postdoctoral advisors probably also qualify for bios here; add them and link them, even if they do not yet have articles.

It is not necessary to cite the basic information in detail to other than the official CV. However, give any actual references providing substantial coverage from 3rd party independent published reliable sources, print or online, but not blogs or press releases, or material derived from press releases. For any part you quote directly from a published bio, include quotation marks and a reference.

Pay particular attention to the way we make links to other Wikipedia articles. Avoid WP:Peacock terms.

If I can help you with any of this, let me know. DGG ( talk ) 19:48, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DGG, thank you for your constructive remarks! I will try to improve the article in the coming week.
I have a question about using the CV as a source; since all sources should be published, how does this work with the CV? I doubt that it is publicly available. If I understand you correctly, I can still use the Bio from the universities website as a source of information, right? I will have to reword or quote it. Do you have a suggestion for a good article about a professor where I can get some further inspiration?
