[edit] Comment

User:Infrogmation, I changed latino to republican in several places because it is my understanding that latino is customarily used to refer to Hispanics living in the US. Hispanic didn't seem right either, since Mexico was already a republic at that point, but republican might not be the exactly correct term either. Anyway, nice article! -- Viajero 13:24, 29 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Thanks. The best terminology is a bit of a problem. The Merida side was Spanish speaking with a government controled by Creoles of Spanish ancestry. Nelson Reed's book on the war uses "Ladino" to refer to them, which Reed says has been objected to by some, but no better more acceptable term was suggested. Hm. The Maya called them "Dzulob". -- Infrogmation 17:47, 29 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Why the Caste War?

The three "castes" in Yucatan were -
The European aristocrats and landowners primarly of Spanish colonial heritage
The Maya "hidalgos" probably related to the pre-colonial native nobilty and accorded privileges and status by the Europeans
The mass of the Maya people who were essentially an exploited and oppressed population. It was this caste that carried on the war.

Interesting article, more like this! Its not even mentioned in an expensive offline encyclopaedia i just checked, thanks to you and Wikipedia for the article Isthatyou 02:37, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Useless section: "Cozumel"

There needs to be more signifigant material added to that section, or else it should be removed and that ONE sentence added to another section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.160.35.227 (talk) 22:47, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Agreed that the isolated section wasn't contributing to the article, and have removed it. Some future expansion to the article can presumably address any significant displacements of populations. --cjllw ʘ TALK 23:54, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Very Important. Is Not Caste, Is Breed.

The real name in Spanish is "Guerra de Castas"

The Name Caste War i absolutly Wrong.... it wasn't a War of puryty an virginal behavor, it was a war of Races and social status... a war of indians vs whites.

Casta = Raza.

Casta means Lineage or Breed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ximbal (talkcontribs) 20:32, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
