Fitzroy Dock[edit]

The text for Fitzroy Dock at some point said "The Fitzroy Dock was lengthened in 1870 and 1880" (two specific years), but this has since been changed to "The Fitzroy Dock was lengthened in 1870-1880" (a range). While it does seem odd that it would take 10 years to extend a dock by 49 metres, the Fitzroy Dock pages also states that before 1890 "Fitzroy was itself twice lengthened (by free labour) from the original c.96 metres to the present c.145 metres." which implies once again that it was lengthened twice. Without having the book referenced, and without a comment along with the page change, it is impossible to know whether the statement should be corrected to "The Fitzroy Dock was lengthened in 1870 and again in 1880" or "The Fitzroy Dock was lengthened over the course of ten years from 1870-1880". These are very different statements of fact. It would seem on the evidence above that the intent of the original statement should be reverted and possibly replaced with my first suggested text. SHFT have confirmed (by phone) that the island will be open to the general public from 3/4/07 with Rivercat Ferry services from Circular Quay. Once I have a documented source for this, I'll add a ref. amitch (talk) 22:08, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biloela[edit]

@Kerry Raymond:I have been following the changes and expansion of Cockatoo Island with great interest over the last few days. The article states that the name Cockatoo Island was dropped in favour of Biloela in 1871. But I cant find anything in the article to say when the name Cockatoo Island was reinstated. In the Biloela Queensland article it is mentioned that the Biloela was used at Cockatoo Island from 1870 to 1913. Should the start date be 1870 or 1871 and should the date 1913 also get a mention in regards to this in the Cockatoo Island article? I have also just added some wikilinks to Biloela back to Cockatoo Island and the Dockyard.Fleet Lists (talk) 07:06, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to dig up an exact source at the moment. There are basically no Trove references for "Biloela" meaning Cockatoo Island until the proclamation naming the industrial school on 27 May 1871, so I'm not sure about 1870 as a start date. This makes it fairly clear that the name Biloela only referred to part of the island [1]. It also mention the name Banks Island, which is new to me. Kerry (talk) 07:25, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I edit conflicted with Kerry there - on further searching I'm not sure there ever was a formal announcement. It seems as if (judging from a thorough going-over of Trove) the island started being called Biloela when the prison opened (1871) and fell out of use after its 1909 closure until about 1912, but I can't find any formal announcement of that, either in relation to the island or the dockyard. I'm not entirely sure the dockyard had a formal name besides "Government Docks" or "Government Dockyard" under NSW control - there's no consistent name for it in Trove besides that, and it would explain why I can't find a proclamation in the Gazette.
I'm not sure Kerry's link helps much: the school only referred to the part of the island, but it doesn't say that the name did (and confusingly lists both Banks and Cockatoo as "former" names). And both the island and the dockyard were definitely commonly known as Biloela during this period. The Drover's Wife (talk) 07:34, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
From the above and what I have read elsewhere the year 1871 appears correct, hence I have changed the Biloela article to 1871 to agree with Cockatoo Island. I think there should be some reference on the Cockatoo Island article about the dropping of Biloela back to Cockatoo Island, even if only related to part of the Island.Fleet Lists (talk) 07:44, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's just not true that it only related to part of the island, though. The dockyard definitely was officially referred to as Biloela - look at this Gazette search for "biloela dock". I'm not sure about official sources for the island as a whole, but there's no shortage of newspaper references in the island context either. There are plenty of mentions in Trove of both the Cockatoo Island dock and the Biloela dock from the 1870 onwards. So while the official name is unclear, it seems both names were used interchangeably in common use. The absence of a gazetted renaming of the island (in either direction) suggests to me that the island never was renamed but that *facilities* on the island like the reformatory and the dockyard used the Biloela name to avoid the convict stigma (at that time, NSW citizens were not keen to remember the convict past of the state, they saw it as shameful). On that basis I have reworded the article. But I am not sure it is the right place now as it refers to all facilities including the dockyard and not just the school.
