Formatting, etc.[edit]

When editing articles such as Española Valley High School, please make sure the formatting conforms to Wikipedia's Manual of Style — this means no coloured headings. Also, it's not necessary to add upcoming sports events or a listing of wins/losses for every team (unless they have won a championship). Guidelines for what should and should not be included in school articles can be found at WikiProject Schools.

Have a look at other similar articles or the article Dallas Independent School District which is considered to be a good school article. ... discospinster talk 15:55, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sparky the Sun Devil[edit]

Hi,

I think I've know the conflict behind the use of sparky the sundevil icon. On the one hand, the image is clearly copyrighted by Arizona State University. On the other hand, EVHS actually uses Sparky in an official capacity. Does EVHS have permission to do so? If they do, then I think its also fair use to post the image on wikipedia under the EVHS article. If EVHS doesn't have permission to use the image, somebody needs to tell them before ASU finds out or they will be liable for copyright infringement. --Greg Comlish (talk) 16:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citations[edit]

Please work towards providing citations before you remove the unsourced tag. --Greg Comlish (talk) 16:18, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In particular, at least the following claims should have citations:

  • EVHS was once known for its drop-out and drug abuse rates.
Citation provided Greg Comlish (talk) 13:26, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cant be found, However the student population is rising, iam a former student of EVHS Today EVHS's reputation is improving as the attendance rate rises.
  • Source Added by: BradlyRMEVHS has also raised its scores on its state assessments (AYP)
  • Doesnt seem to be trueEspañola (EVHS) was the #3 most improved school in the state of New Mexico for 2007
  • and most improved in the Nation (#221).

Unconstructive edits and blanking of talk page[edit]

This article is not the high school's own web page. It is a Wikipedia article and therefore must conform to Wikipedia's standards.

Do NOT remove tags asking for citations unless you have actually provided citations for the claims made.

Do NOT remove legitimate comments on this talk page.

Do NOT add your own name to the article.

Editors who do any of the above will be warned ONCE, and the second time they will be blocked.

What?[edit]

"EVHS has been a AAAA school since the early 80s which has taken EVHS to win four sport related state championships and about 15 activity or individual state championships." I can't make sense of this sentence. Would someone who knows what it is trying to say clean up the grammar? Aleta Sing 20:01, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed it to what I think it should say. If it is incorrect, please change it. However, do not simply revert my edit - I had made many copyedit and MOS changes previously, and an editor reverted them without comment. Aleta Sing 13:19, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image layout[edit]

On my display the row of pictures on the right-hand side of the athletics section overlaps with the 2006-2007 sport achievements section, but I'm not quite sure how to fix it (obviously I could shrink the pictures slightly but that depends on a reader's text size). Anyone with more formatting knowledge have a suggestion? Olaf Davis | Talk 15:35, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It overlapped for me, too. I've fixed it for my view. See if it's fixed in your display now. Aleta Sing 16:17, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AAAA[edit]

This article mentions AAAA a number of times, but I have no idea what it means (apart from guessing that one of the As stands for athletics) and AAAA is no help. Anyone care to enlighten me / write an article on it / suggest a reference so I can do so? Olaf Davis | Talk 08:10, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ThomasSalazar has pointed me to New Mexico Activities Association in reply, and I've linked to it on the article. Olaf Davis | Talk 08:58, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mission statement[edit]

Two separate editors have this evening removed the mission statement, both to be reverted by another. I see no reason why we need this here. It is a fairly standard thing, nothing special to this school. This is not the EVHS website. Why should the mission statement be given here? LadyofShalott 02:25, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What's the complaint against the EVHS mission statement? This statement is a unique reflection of the community's values. I would support re-adding the mission statement and potentially other material that was recently blanked. Greg Comlish (talk) 22:31, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly don't see that there's that much unique or special about it. I don't think it adds much that's useful to the article. BTW, the editor who was reverting the removal of it, as well as had made lots of other changes, turned out to be a sockpuppet of a banned user. LadyofShalott 02:52, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see where you're coming from. I guess if the school was doing unique things to institutionalize or live up to their mission statement (for example, a special festival to celebrate diversity) then I would lean towards inclusion. If it's just oatmeal from the school board then it should probably be excluded. Greg Comlish (talk) 21:52, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fight Song[edit]

The guidelines at Wikiproject schools (WP:WPSCH) explicitly exclude "Fight Song" lyrics from being notable. Less inclusive editors will interpret the presence of lyrics as "promotional" and delete them from the article. However, it is acceptable to upload the lyrics to wikisource and place a reference to the wikisource lyrics in the article. I would recommend doing that if you want to keep the lyrics. Greg Comlish (talk) 15:09, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edits by DinNM[edit]

I've restored the recent edits to the article by DinNM. He may be a sockpuppet, but those edits were constructive, made in good faith, and met the criteria for verifiability. Some contributions are less notable, but those should be dealt with on a case by case basis, not wholesale deletion. This article has struggled for a long time and I want to help it succeed and keep content where possible. Greg Comlish (talk) 15:31, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mariachi[edit]

Mariachi was first started in the school during the school year 1992-1993 under the direction of Robert Lucero. The first school mariachi was called "Mariachi Espanola" and they were the second High School Mariachi program in the state (Taos High School being the first). Among some of their honors, they performed for President Bill Clinton, performed regularly for Governor Bruce King and entertained Mexican superstar Juan Gabriel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.123.110.165 (talk) 03:27, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
